At the Launch, both Anna and Peter became the first members of Friends of Hobart Legacy and are shown holding their Friends of Hobart Legacy Badge. This is a new initiative which will assist our Club in the future. Because at last, its spring. 2 News from Clarence Legacy Widows Club (Meets 2nd Tuesday of the month, 10.30am at Rosny Library) Welcome to Spring! Although we have had a great winter with lots of lovely trips and good speakers (with thanks to Joy). We have six new members, so our numbers have grown. We thank Legacy for invitations to the Annual Dinner and the Launch of Badge Week Luncheon. Both functions were very enjoyable. Nine of our members joined the roster to sell badges in Rosny. Our thanks to Barrie and Ivan for all their help. Sadly we have lost two members - Norma Wawn, our inaugural Treasurer and Thelma Heron. We were represented at both of their funerals by members of our club. Now we all look forward to spring and summer and our Christmas celebrations. My best wishes to all at Legacy and our Widows Clubs and I hope we will all be together at the Legacy Christmas lunch. Until next Links Nola Patten - President News from the Northern Suburbs (Meets 2nd Wednesday of the month, 1pm at Glenorchy RSL) It does take time to get back into the swing of things, but I do thank the members for nominating me to this position. Our AGM was a successful and happy meeting, with visitors from other Clubs attending. I find it pleasing that after our meeting, the ladies do stay on for a chat and a cuppa. Legacy Week was most successful and I do thank the ladies for their participation. I received a glowing report about Bev Munro at Moonah from Legatee Bob Gibbs. Last month it was an enjoyable trip to the Maydena RSL for lunch, and also a stop off at the Op Shop. Our ladies do like to spend We have a new Travel Officer with Norma Easton taking up the position. To those of our members (and there have been a few of them on the sick list and in hospital) I wish you good health and a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you again at meetings. 3 3 News from Sorell (Meets 2nd Wednesday of the month, 11am at Sorell RSL) Hooray, spring has arrived! Hopefully bringing some more sunshine with it. We have had some very enjoyable trips this year with about 12 members attending each trip. Gwen Chamberlain has had her surgery and we wish her well with her recovery. We hope that everyone else is well. We are looking forward to meeting friends at the Legacy Christmas lunch in November, but until then, we wish all at Legacy House well and good wishes to you all for the coming festive season. Mrs Nancy Weeding - President News from Kingborough (Meets 2nd Monday of the month, 10am at Kingston Beach RSL) Hello to all ladies. Isn't it a lovely thought: the approach of spring time. We hope to see less of the winds and look for more sunshine. Despite the weather report, we remain a happy group of girls, and we do look forward to new members. To those who haven't been in good health lately, we wish you a speedy recovery. Joan organised a visit to the Franklin Eldercare Fashion Parade which was a very successful function. Ten of our members joined the bus trip to Huon for lunch. Again, as always, we enjoyed the occasion. We stayed at our own depot for a visit from the Channel Museum ladies - a wonderful collection of early history has been gathered for their district. Button Day sellers enjoyed their shifts, and we thank Peter for keeping an eye on us as always. 4 4 Both the launch of Badge Week and Badge Week were again a great success (see report by Chairman, Rob Grey). Included in this Legacy Links are just some of the photographs of the many individuals who participated. Amongst the many local organisations were: 12th/40th Battalion, Royal Tasmania Regiment, 2nd Force Support Battalion, Headquarters RAN, Army & RAAF Tasmania, 29th Squadron RAAF, Training Ship Derwent, Claremont College, The Hutchins School, St Brigid's New Norfolk, St Virgil's School, St Paul s Bridgewater, Suncorp Bank, the Tasmanian Cricket Association and all our Legacy Widows Clubs. Thank you! I am very pleased to report on the Badge Week activities this year. With a few more funds still to arrive at Legacy House, more that $68,000 has been raised so far this year. Launceston Legacy reports about $50,000. While this is not quite as much as last year, it is more than the year before and still represents a very commendable effort by our volunteers and others who took it upon themselves to assist us. While the participation of Legacy widows was unfortunately fewer than last year, the effect was offset with the added support from, for example, the Tasmanian Cricket Association, Army Reserve and Navy Cadets. The uniforms, badges and medals of the latter attracted much attention. However this could never replace the enthusiasm and presence of our Legacy widows! Next year, Badge Week is planned for 2-8 September Please keep those dates in mind. Hobart Legacy thanks all our widows who supported our fund raising activities this year whether it was in kind or in spirit. There is not much to say again this time, but spring has come again bringing forth the flowers. I know we all grumble about the weather but we have to thank God we live in the lucky country. 7 7 Presidents Report Hello Everyone, The months are flying passed and it will soon be Christmas. I am keeping a eye on my diary as there are so many functions / meetings that I have to attend that I need to ask other Legatees to represent Hobart Legacy, as I work full time. We have had our Badge Week. It has been a great success with the income so far being around $67,000. I wish to thank most sincerely all those widows, Legatees and helpers who have made this year s Badge Week such an incredible success. It is the second most successful Badge Week we have held. I forgot to wear my badge during that week and got stung three times how could I walk pass a badge seller? The Widows Christmas Luncheon will be held on the 27th November and I hope to see you all there. Buses and entertainment will be provided as usual. Santa is coming. We have booked him in advance and I have asked him to behave. This year we are going to the Hellenic Hall in North Hobart and the menu will be similar to that of other years. At present we are exploring the way we may be able to send Care Packages to our Australian Defence Force (ADF) members overseas. We have had contact with senior ADF staff and there will be more on this subject in the future. Donʹt send gifts yet please. We will let you know when and what is required. If you have any needs or concerns please call the office and we will try as usual to do our best to help. Hobart Legacy will again conduct Christmas Gift Wrapping of gifts for the general public at Northgate Shopping Centre during December. This has been a very successful fundraising activity in the past and those who volunteered enjoyed the experience. The spread of hours and the number of days means there is a need for the maximum number of volunteers. Each shift is a minimum of two hours. 8 8 CHRISTMAS CARDS Hobart Legacy will again participate in the sale of Christmas Cards at St David s Cathedral. Beginning Monday 17th October, the shop there will be open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm Saturdays. Cards can be purchased individually at St David s. Hobart Legacy office will also sell packs of ten cards starting at $5 per pack of ten. Grade Ten students from Mount Carmel College will assist Hobart Legacy with sales at St David s on the 28th and 29th November. Why choose an independent Executor? 9 LEGACY CHRISTMAS PUDDINGS Delicious Legacy Puddings are available again this year from your usual outlets and from Legacy House in Macquarie Street. 9 News from New Norfolk Legacy Widows Club (Meets 1st Friday of the month, 1.30pm at the New Norfolk RSL) There is really very little to report. We have continued with our monthly meetings, alternated with our luncheon meetings. We volunteered to sell badges on September 2nd, and we are told that the overall result was good. We have lost yet another member to the Corumbene Home, and as she was a regular attender this leaves a gap in the numbers attending our meetings. We are looking forward to the Christmas luncheon at the new venue. It sounds very interesting. We wish all members a very happy Christmas and every good thing for the New Year. We will look for your news in next years bulletins. We wish to record our appreciation of the help received from Legacy, and the fine job of organisation that is done with various outings and particularly the Christmas lunch. Everything is done for us and (quietly) we love being so spoilt. And the best of wishes to the office girls - thank you for what you do. Men aren't interested in stockings unless someone is wearing them. Men don t think about buying gifts until Christmas Eve, when its too late. Men don t stop and ask for directions when they get lost. 10 RICH CHRISTMAS PUDDING 1 lb Butter ½ lb Mixed Peel 1 lb Currants ½ pkt Figs (chopped) 1 lb Sultanas 1 ½ lbs Brown Sugar 1 lb Raisins ¾ lb Breadcrumbs ½ lb Chopped Dates ¼ lb Plain Flour 1 Pkt Slivered Almonds 10 Eggs Small teaspoon Carb Soda ½ cup Rum 1 teaspoon each of Mixed Spice and Cinnamon Lemon Essence (to taste) Mix all together and divide into three puddings. Boil six hours. The longer the puddings hang the better the flavour. Thanks to Mrs J Holloway - Ranelagh Bread Crumb Pudding 3 Cups Stale White Bread Crumbs (not dried) 1 Cup Mixed Fruit 1 Cup Milk 1 Teaspoon Bi Carb Soda 1 Mashed Banana (optional) Mix all ingredients together. Place in a medium sized, greased bowl. Cover with a double layer of foil and steam for 90 minutes. Serve with custard and cream. Thanks to Mrs J Watchorn 10 RECIPES PINEAPPLE FRUIT CAKE 1 Cup Sugar 400 gram Can Crushed Pineapple 1 t Mixed Spice 1 t Nutmeg 1 Cup Plain Flour 1 Cup SR Flour 1 t Carb Soda 4 oz. Butter 2 Eggs 1 Cup Grated Carrot Place sugar, crushed pineapple, mixed fruit, soda, spices, carrot and butter in a saucepan and boil for three minutes. Cool completely. Sift flours together, mix into mixture with the two well beaten eggs. Place mixture into a greased and lined 7 inch tin, bake for about 1 ½ hours at 150 or until a skewer is inserted in the centre and comes out clean. Thanks to Mrs J Holloway - Ranelagh 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN S SERVICES This year heralds 70 years since the formation of three specific military services for the women of Australia. The first of the services to be formed, the Women s Australian Auxiliary Air Force (WAAAF) was established in February 1941, the Women s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) was formed in April 1941 and the Australian Army Women s Service, later known as the Australian Women s Army Service (AWAS) was established, seventy years ago today (13th August 2011). Commemorating the occasion, the Minister for Veterans Affairs, Warren Snowdon, said that the forces were originally formed to release men from certain military duties to allow their deployment in fighting units overseas. During the Second World War more than 27,000 women joined the ranks of the WAAAF. The women who joined were posted across the country, from North Queensland to Western Australia, they served at RAAF bases, flight training schools and factories. Mr Snowdon said. These women played a vital role in the war effort despite not being allowed to fly or serve outside Australia. They worked in a range of areas such as radio telephony, signals, radar operations, flight mechanics and electrics, meteorology, catering and administration. The WRANS was formed, initially to provide women to undertake driving, office duties and catering services. By the end of the war their role was expanded to include work in technical areas such as protecting ships from magnetic mines, intelligence and cryptoanalysis. Over 2000 women served with the WRANS during WW II, and after a short stand down after the war, the service continues to support the Royal Australian Navy in non-seagoing roles until the mid 1980 s. Mr Snowdon said. The formation of the AWAS was authorised on 13 August The AWAS took on more than 21,000 women for roles in anti-aircraft and coastal artillery, ordnance, cipher, electrical, intelligence and mechanical units, as clerks, typists and cooks, parachute folders, drivers and butchers during the war, Mr Snowdon said. Similar to the WRANS, the AWAS was disbanded after the war but was reinstated in 1951 as the Women s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC). In the late 1970 s female soldiers began to be integrated into the Army at large and in early 1984, the WRAAC was disbanded.
