3 What s new in Brewster? This is a question we hear in the Information Center often and this year we have a lot of new to share! 2015 and 2016 have brought a number of major changes to town to the local government, to the infrastructure, and to the business community. And while some people see change as negative, I prefer to view it as the process of making things better of making them NEW! You ll find a list of some of these new happenings on page 38 of this magazine. But one thing that isn t new is our local business community s commitment to Brewster. Our businesses are made up of entrepreneurs who generally live right here in town. When you get to know these folks, who are your neighbors, who serve on town committees, who donate to our local mission-based organizations, who volunteer in the community to make it a better place, you will come to see that they have the same passion for preserving Brewster s culture and environment that you do. You can get to know Brewster businesses through this magazine. And you can get to know us even better by tuning in to cable access Channel 99 and watching the Best of Brewster TV show! Whether you are here for a short stay, or live here year round, we invite you to enjoy everything Brewster has to offer. Ms. S. 28 Building a Successful Business on Cape Cod: WeNeedaVacation.com The Brewster Chamber of Commerce honored WeNeedaVacation.com with a 2016 Build a Better Mousetrap Award. In 1997 entrepreneurs Jeff and Joan Talmadge started WeNeedaVacation.com as a way for homeowners and vacationers looking for short term rental property to connect easily. Before this, that meant classified ads and hours of phone calls, with mailings back and forth to share pictures and details. The Talmadge s believed using the internet to showcase rental properties would be a better way to go. But in 1997 the use of the internet to sell products and services was new. Joan recalls making lots of cold calls and holding hands as home owners transitioned from their familiar methods of communication to this new service. Slowly, people became comfortable with the service and the business began to grow. Today, WeNeedaVacation.com has over 3,500 vacation rental listings. And the business has become an important resource for the tourism industry on Cape Cod and the islands. Jeff said when they started the wesbite they built tracking codes into the program so that extracting statistics would be easy: with the push of a button, he can provide all kinds of projections on vacation rental trends, which he willingly shares with local chambers of commerce and the media. WeNeedaVacation.com now has ten employees and a brick and mortar office in Brewster located at 15 Cape Lane. What started as a home-based business has grown to a well-established yearround family business complete with a succession plan. Daughter Becky Fisher, who lives in Brewster, joined the business in 2006 and is the liaison to home owners, providing marketing support, as well as photographing and videoing properties. Son Jim, a software engineer, has assured Jeff that he will step in when the time is right. Cape Cod and the islands are a perfect places to grow entrepreneurs and WeNeedaVacation.com is a glowing example of how that can happen. The Brewster Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize them as our 2016 Build a Better Mousetrap Award winner. 40 BREWSTER HISTORIC SITES CROSBY MANSION: A STORY OF ROMANCE AND OPULENCE Evidence of Brewster s entrepreneurial forefathers is seen all over town as many of their homes are now inns and bed and breakfasts. Crosby Mansion is one such home, but now it is preserved as a monument to an earlier time, owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and maintained by the non-profit group Friends of Crosby Mansion as a living history tribute to the past. Located off Main St. (Rte. 6A) on Crosby Lane in East Brewster, the elegant grounds are open to the public for walking all summer. The mansion is open with guided tours during docent-led open houses held in July and August visit CapeCod.com/events for dates. Albert Crosby was born in 1823 and raised in a modest cape house in Brewster that still stands where the mansion is, as he had the mansion wrap around his old family homestead. Albert moved to Chicago and made his fortune producing distilled alcohol which he sold to the army during the Civil War. Sales of this non-taxed medicinal alcohol made him a wealthy man. 40 Best of Brewster 2016

41 Albert returned to the Cape with a bride twenty years his junior and spared no expense to build her the three story, thirty-five room home overlooking Cape Cod Bay. Completed in 1888, the home was named Tawasentha built in the grand style of Chicago s Gold Coast Mansions and featured a sixty-foot viewing tower, fifteen fireplaces with imported tile, hand carved mahogany and oak walls, a parlor fashioned after one at the Palace of Versailles, an entrance duplicating one at Buckingham Palace, a two-story billiard room, marble sinks and floors in the baths, and gas lighting and heating throughout. Because of its heightened construction, the Old Colony Railroad laid a side track to the site. The mansion was designed for the lavish entertaining his young wife, Matilda, loved. Legend has it that when her soirees became too much for him, Albert would slip away to the old homestead and sit peacefully in his favorite rocking chair. The mansion s crowning glory was a two-story 75 X 50 art gallery filled with valuable paintings and statuary, including works by Childe Hassan, El Greco, Albert Bierstadt and other famous artists. After Albert s death in 1906 at the age of 83, Matilda opened the art gallery to the public one day a week in summer, apparently in return for the town s not raising her taxes. The gallery was legendary, and a number of famous people were said to have visited, including the Duke of Wales, Helen Keller and Samuel Clemens. Visit or call for more information. 46 CHARLES SUMNER: 2016 PERSON OF THE YEAR By S. Kyle Hinkle Charlie Sumner retired in October 2015 after 29 years as the Town Administrator for the Town of Brewster. Prior to this, he served five years as Executive Secretary in the town of Littleton and two years as Administrative Assistant to the Town Manager in Acton. Charlie was inspired to pursue government service while working on his undergraduate degree at Suffolk University (he went on to receive an MPA from North Eastern). At the time, towns were run by volunteers, but the issues facing towns, like Proposition 2 ½ and increasing populations, were becoming more complicated. It was becoming clear that professionals in public administration would be needed. Towns had to be more organized and focused and lots of positions were created in the 1980 s to do this. In Brewster, a citizen s committee pushed for this change and in 1986, he was hired for a one-year term. He recalls Back then, it wasn t as fast paced as it is now. There was a seasonality to what was happening. In 1986 when he was hired, Charlie said the town was under siege for development. In 1973 Brewster s population was 1,800 but now it was 7,000. Ocean Edge was expanding and private homes were being built. Yet the infrastructure of services to support the population remained the same as it has been in He says It was a politically charged time and there was a fair amount of conflict. A new elementary school was needed, and local water needed to be protected. During that first year, Charlie s relationship with town leadership strengthened and now the rest is history. Prior to moving to Brewster, Charlie and his wife Cindy had visited occasionally staying with friends but otherwise didn t have much knowledge of the area. They were in Acton for six years and PHOTO: WILLIAM F. POMEROY he said he was looking for a new job and new opportunities, and they knew they didn t want to leave Massachusetts. He said I m a golfer and a sailor, so when the Brewster position came up it seemed perfect for us. Charlie is also a recreational runner. Adding this to playing golf and sailing, Brewster has afforded him plenty of chances to participate in these favorite sports. He is also a mountain climber and has reached the peaks of Mt. Rainier in Washington state, Mt. Whitney in California and the Grand Tetons in Wyoming to name a few. Next year, he plans to climb Mount Blanc in the French Alps. Making the transition to a small town like Brewster was refreshing according to Charlie who was raised in Waltham graduating from high school with over 1,000 other students. The Sumner s three children, twins Kaitlin and Emily and son Patrick, were born within 11 months of each other after they moved to Brewster and have been through the Nauset school system. But Charlie still has ties to his old neighborhood: his running and climbing partner is his childhood friend from Waltham; together they ran the 2016 Boston Marathon raising money for the Marathon Tribute project that was started in Brewster. Charlie may be retired from his town government position, but now he is already hard at work as the first executive director of Pleasant Bay Community Boating in Orleans. The 10-year old organization seeks to connect families with children to affordable opportunities for sailing off the shore of Pleasant Bay where the towns of Orleans, Harwich and Brewster intersect. First on his list of goals to accomplish: a capital campaign to help improve the buildings on the property! 46 Best of Brewster 2016
