2 The Joint Project Starting point: Urban Audit comissioned by EU / GD-Regional Policy Urban Audit European Quality of Life Perception Survey adding citizens subjective assessments to objective statistical data every 3 years 75 European cities; 7 German cities in the sample 2009 Since 2006 a project group of German cities AG Koordinierte Umfrage (Coordinated Perception Survey) is conducting the survey together in parallel to the EU perception survey Project coordination via working group within the frame of KOSIS & VDSt (German association of municipal statisticians) 2006: 15 cities 2009: 20 cities 2012: 20+? cities 2

4 Survey Design Telephone interviews (CATI) Target population: German speaking population starting from age 15 Random sample representative at city level (ADM- sample system) Minimum sample size per city: 500 respondents Total sample size 2009: respondents Output: each participating city receives data file with data of all cities (cases) Report (basic tables and chart) for each German city Aggreement with EU/GD Regional Policy to exchange data comparisons with all 75 European cities in the Perception Survey Cities are flexible to decide on survey modules additional to Base module of Perception Survey

9 Project Status 3rd round (2012) Period of fieldwork scheduled for Nov-Dec German Cities planing to participate Project group working on additional survey modules / refining existing modules Combination of subjective results with objective indicators from the Urban Audit data collection intended Agreement on cooperation by using a modular structure and joint discussions of questionnaire and results ensures comparability over time and to EU cities ensures cities stay flexible to fullfill their individual informational demands saves ressources (money, knowledge) fosters mutual learning, communication & cooperation 9
