10 Queensland ensland Historic Motoring Council Inc Meet the Organisers Greg & Christine Stevens Our cars We both have a keen interest in vintage vehicles and own a 1918 Model T Ford, 1929 Morgan Super Aero Trike (3-wheeler), 1970 Morgan 4/4 4-seater and a running though totally unrestored 1927 Indian Scout 101. We have previously owned 2 Austin 7's (now in Hobart and Sydney), a 1938 Austin Big 7 fitted with JWF Fibreglass Milano body, E Oldsmobile Tourer (now in Germany), 1950 D36 Canadian built Dodge (now in Mackay) and 1926 Packard Pantheon Model 326 (now in the UK). Greg completed in historic racing at Uralla, New England GP, Leyburn and Lakeside including the last historic meet at Lakeside in the Austin Big 7. The Billy Cart We also have a Billy Cart which is a 62% scale of a 1915 Model T Ford. It has exactly 62% wheelbase and track and has twin inboard disc brakes on the rear. Greg built the Billycart the Red Bull Billycart Grand Prix in Melbourne in We were Team 11 of 100 competitors. 3,600 entry forms were sent out with 800 completed forms being returned. Of these, only 100 were selected on creativity, style and promise. Well! The Red Bull Billycart Grand Prix was run and won - but not by us! Christine continues to race and enjoy the Billycart throughout Qld, NSW and Victoria. Tell us about Christine Christine was born in Julia Creek (260 km from Mt Isa and 650 km from Townsville); at the age of 18 months moved to a sheep and cattle property half way between Hughenden and Winton. Her favourite toy and gift was a Cyclops Pedal Car Tipper given to her by her step-grandfather, Fred, Christmas (He was far from a wealthy man so this gift was a big deal. Apparently this gift was due to her older brothers being sick of her playing with their toys and breaking them.) Christine attended boarding school in Townsville, moving to Brisbane for senior and stayed! What is Greg's description of Christine? President of Everything! Christine is President of Queensland Historic Motoring Council Inc. She is currently in 3rd term as President as there are tasks she wants to complete and/or improve before handing over the reins. Christine is also President of the Australian Historic Motoring Federation Inc and has been in this role for 4 years. Christine has a business, Vintage Noise. This is a project she took on to fill the need in the vintage car movement for "Vintage Noise" i.e. replacement rubber horn bulbs for hand-operated brass car horns. Since then, a variety of horns, mounts and accessories have been added to the range and today has nearly 90 part numbers. Christine, what is your favourite car? The one I am driving at the time. 10

11 Tell us about Greg Greg was born in Brisbane and has lived in Brisbane all his life. He has a passion for creating, and doing things correctly. If you don't have time to do the right the first time, how will you find time to redo it? Greg is self-employed and operates Fuel Tank and Radiator Service and Vintage Honeycomb Radiator Company. Greg works predominantly with the restoration of vintage radiators, and cleaning and repairing all fuel tanks. Greg's purchased a radiator business in 1982, commencing in Nundah then moving to Northgate. Greg worked as an employee in the radiator industry for 10 years prior to this. You will always find at least one veteran, vintage or classic radiator and fuel tank in the workshop in progress or ready to be collected. In 2009 he purchased very early authentic film type honeycomb core manufacturing machinery from a longstanding and now closed business in Sydney. This machinery has a known history dating back to Johnson Brothers, who we believe had this machinery made here in Australia in the 1930's. After more than 18 months of restoring the worn vintage machinery and with a combination of research, improved tooling and testing, the core has been redesigned. The new core design was wind tunnel tested and Greg is proud to be making a core more efficient than those he had imported and fitted for many years. Greg manufactures Radiator Jigs and Ridge Rollers and other specialised equipment. Well over 1,000 Radiator Jigs and over 800 Ridge Rollers are being used in shops throughout Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and New Guinea and, more recently, Europe and America. Greg is the supporter (and critic) behind Christine, assisting her in both Presidential roles. Greg is QHMC Membership Secretary as well as QHMC Webmaster. Greg & Christine We share our passion of this historic vehicles and receive much enjoyment out of seeing others enjoy our vehicles. Watching a little boys' face light up as he is placed in the drivers seat of the car; Listening the an elderly gentleman reminisce as he tells stories of, "I had a Morris just like that," (when I was actually driving an Austin 7). We initiated and organise National Motoring Heritage Day, Picnic in the Park. This is the 3rd Sunday of May Annually and is held in Queens Park Ipswich, free of charge to the entrants. We will be home from Tasmania just in time to host the 3rd "Picnic in the Park". Combined, we have organised and hosted 2 national Morgan events 2009 Morgan Centenary Celebrations in Inverell and Morgan Owners Queensland 5th Anniversary "Morgan Round-up" in Gympie We have organised 3 previous Tasmanian tours, also over the Easter period (2003, 2006 and 2012) and the weather was close to perfect each time. Here s hoping we can do it again! Have a great holiday! We will. 11

Another unusual feature of this light-station is that it was connected to town water in The Mersey Bluff Lighthouse was established in 1889 and is built of bricks on a stone base. It replaced a succession of beacons and obelisks that had formerly stood on the site. It also replaced the earlier Don River light. In 1910 the original kerosene lamp was converted to acetylene gas which was supplied by a Colt 7-day acetylene generator. The light was converted to DC electric operation in 1920 and de-manned at that time. It was connected to mains power in The establishment of the lighthouse ended a history of wrecks in this area. Option 1 This has 12 km of silica road & a Ferry $20. The section of famous "silica road" is an all weather surface using the tailings from the nearby silica mine. The locals say this white road on either side of Corinna provides a better driving experience than the sealed sections. (Some of the sealed sections are not great!) This is a scenic drive, though if you are in a low vehicles (i.e. Morgans) take it steady. Here are 2 links that may help you to make your decision Option 2 This route is bitumen only. If you take this option, a small detour into Waratah is recommended. Option 1 Depart STANLEY WYNYARD 59 km YOLLA 18 km 77 km WARATAH 56 km 133 km Waratah sits on the edge of Lake Waratah and the Tarkine Reserve and was once the home of the richest tin mine in the southern hemisphere. It is an historic mining town, set in pristine rainforest on the banks of the Pieman River. It is at the southern end of the Tarkine, the largest temperate rainforest in Australia. This is the northern most point where the Huon pine grows. Corinna was inhabited by white settlers in 1881 and proclaimed a town in 1894, following a flood of people arriving in pursuit of gold. The township of Corinna is a unique example of a remote mining town that has survived. Previously, the Tarkiner people made Corinna and the nearby Tarkine areas their home for 30,000 years. The town is powered by an eco-friendly solar system with back-up generators. They have pure rainwater, probably the most pure water in the world, and all waste is removed from the town. The Tarkine Hotel and Tannin Restaurant have become a focal point of life for the community. Lunch and dinners are available, using as much local produce as possible. Boardwalk Stroll the Pieman River Boardwalk Lower Falls This is a 35m torrent in a rainforest gully. Corinna Pieman River (view from the barge) 24

The house is now operating as a bed and breakfast, though the gardens are still open to the public Open: Entry: The gardens are open daily to 5:00pm Free entry to the gardens Historic Lake Margaret Hydro Power Tour Phone: Join a private tour of this historic village. Tasmania's West Coast was one of the most remote places on earth when prospectors first discovered the rich mineral deposits in the area. With no coal to generate electricity and the forest being rapidly depleted to fuel the furnaces of the mine it was imperative that another power source be found. It was decided to harness the power of running water which was the most plentiful resource with an average of 3.5m of rain per year. Hear the stories of how this was achieved and the thriving village of families that lived in this remote but beautiful spot. Watch the machinery work as it did over 100 years ago and marvel at its immaculate condition. 37 Day 6 Wednesday 19 th April Wall in the Wilderness, Tarraleah, Oust, Bushy Park, Salmon Ponds, Plenty, New Norfolk and Brighton Depart DERWENT BRIDGE Wall in the Wilderness 2 km past Derwent Bridge The project took approximately 10 years to complete and, if not yet, it will eventually consist of 100 sculpted panels each three metres high and one metre wide. This series of story panels, as well as numerous three dimensional works, are sculpted predominantly in timber, unlocking the history, hardship and perseverance of the people of the Central Highlands Tasmania, paying homage to the individuals upon whose labour rests our own quality of life. The murals are carved out of Huon pine and feature panels five metres high, telling the stories of pioneering development of the harsh Central Highlands, beginning with the indigenous people, to timber harvesters, to pastoralists, to Hydro-electricity and mining. 37

38 TARRALEAH 51 km Tarraleah has views of the Tasmanian Highlands and wilderness and was once the home of hundreds of Hydroelectric pioneers. It is now a privately owned holiday village (and you can buy the entire town for around $12 million). It is beautifully restored to its former glory, retaining the original style and charm of the 1930's. Drop in for a coffee or light lunch in the cafe. OUSE 38 km 89 km After Ouse you can continue on the Lyell Highway if you wish, and through Hamilton, In Hamilton, there are historic buildings scatted amongst the farmland. The Old School House was built by convicts in Prospect Village and Garden is not far from Hamilton. It is an amazing example of what a talented gardener can do in an extremely dry landscape. Another untested option is to turn right onto Ellendale Road / C608 approximately 6 1/2 km's after Ouse. These are where the following directions are taking you. ELLENDALE 20 km 109 km FENTONBURY WESTERWAY You cross Tyenna River at Westerway and the road straight head becomes the B61 and is the Gordon River Road. GLENORA Kingsholme Oast House, Ellendale BUSHY PARK 21 km 130 km Bushy Park is described as the hop capital of Tasmania. It is a charming, small village where 19th century, deciduous trees and hop fields combine to give it an English feel. You will see tall hop vine frames in fields where neat, exotically shaped Oast Houses wait to process the rich harvest. 38

39 Text Kiln, south of Bushy Park, turn right into 10 Acre Lane (it is at the end of the lane) The most impressive building in the district is Ebenezer Shoobridge's famous Text Kiln. It is an Oast House which was completed in Shoobridge, who worked his hop fields with his wife, 3 sons and 5 daughters, embraced the idea that 'Union is Strength' and believed that texts from The Bible would be inspiration for his workers. On the outside walls of the 'Text Kiln' Shoobridge wrote "And these words that I command thee this day shall be in thine heart and thy shall write them on the posts of thine house and on thine gate". In the middle of the building is the sign "God is Love" and on the far side is "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life". Hawthorn Lodge (1869), 1733 Glenora Road (Cnr Uxbridge Road This was the home of Ebenezer Shoobridge's son, Robert. It was turned into a guest house but is now a 5 bedroom, private home with an impressive driveway and gracious gardens which include Canadian Sequoias, oak trees and mulberry, apple, plum, a 120-year-old magnolia and a huge, old cherry tree. The Water Race William Shoobridge built a 3 km water race to bring water from the Styx River to drive a huge waterwheel which generated electricity to dry the hops at his Oast House. Some historians believe that Bushy Park had electricity before Hobart. In Bushy Park, continue on Glenora Road / B62 not Left on B61 to the highway. It has one of Australia's few traditional village squares. New Norfolk has a rich hop-growing past and is still the centre of the surrounding hop-growing area, producing most of the hops for Australian breweries. Wander through the antique stores. Stop and enjoy the river, mountain and valley views. BRIDGEWATER 19 km 168 km BRIGHTON 4 km 172 km Brighton has impressive Georgian buildings scattered throughout the surrounding district. An unintentional bonus in the district is that the delightfully eccentric and very British Royal Marine, Private Hugh Germain, who reputedly travelled through the area with a copy of The Bible and the Arabian Nights, provided names like Jerusalem, Jericho, Jordan, and Lake Tiberius to the places he visited. Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, 593 Briggs Road (signposted off the Midland Highway) This is a sanctuary rather than a zoo. It sits on a hill overlooking the town and has healthy communities of wombats, Eastern quolls, Tasmanian pademelons, potoroos, emus, Tasmanian bettongs, echidnas, possums, koalas, lizards and native birds.
