6 The Tasmanian Experience A Land of Contrasts and Surprises Hobart is Tasmania s capital and the second oldest city in Australia. Nestled on either side of the Derwent River at the base of Mount Wellington, the city has an intimate feel. Salamanca Markets attract bargain hunters on Saturdays, and the Constitution Dock area is lined with restaurants and bars celebrating the island s quality produce. Port Arthur lies in the far south-east corner, where powerful waves break along jagged shorelines.
