5 APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY Aqua_linea is a concept which though confined to the Matron Ruby Grant Park addresses pedestrian movement throughout the greater Green Square precinct. To impart a sense of continuum on this scale the concept furthers Kerrie Poliness Drying Park Green explorations by reinforcing the importance and history of water to the site. Best described as an artwork in mow-able landform and intrigue, the concept uses the forms created by one or more large ripples which have their epicenters at pathway confluences, as if pushed outward by pedestrian movement. These undulating landforms which manifest across the park s entirety have their cross sections truncated at numerous points as they intersect these pedestrian routes. These truncations are marked by vacuum filled, toughened safety glass units which conform to the truncated profile but which have an internal visual intrigue created by shallow but seemingly endless infinity constructions. These points of human interaction with the ripple s interior give a sense of preciousness within as the collage of sky, surroundings and the viewer s own image repeat endlessly into the interior of the ripples lines. This notion of preciousness within is a thinly disguised metaphor for the ecological preciousness of the water alluded to in the ripples and at the same time, the broader context of the hospital site whose preciousness within is the preciousness of human life. This is a concept embedded in site which communicates and reinforces movement on a human scale. Its larger format has a simplicity which belies the pedestrian experience at the pathway/ ripple truncations. These pedestrian interactions take the viewer beyond the artwork itself. The soft, playful nature of the sinuous landform provides a parkwide playground. The amplitude of the crest to swale height would be determined by mow-able steepness and playground fall height regulations but a gently undulating landform in the order of 1 metre could be anticipated. Functioning effectively as vacuum filled (no moisture/fungus buildup) light boxes, the intrigue of the infinity constructions provide both day and night interaction. At night, the illuminated truncations contribute to pathway lighting and help define the pattern of pedestrian movement. Aqua-linea - perspective (south east) 4.

6 infinity mirror detail by night RELATIONSHIP TO ARTIST S PRACTICE My 36 year art practice has become exclusively focused upon artworks specific to site. The use of illumination to create concepts which metamorphose from day to night is a recurring interest. Paramount also, is the desire to create large scale works which offer the potential for intimate interaction.
