2 Foreword and Acknowledgements This recreational booklet began life as an idea amongst the staff of the Mental Health services of the Otago District Health Board. People with experience of mental illness often found discovering recreation of quality and meaning, on a limited budget, was a difficult one. Signpost, a consumer run initiative that works with people experiencing mental health issues by way of advocacy, information, and community liaison work, took up the task of compiling this resource to be used as a stimulus to finding that recreation. While the confines of finding things for under five dollars was not easy, all involved in the project knew that with imagination and an appreciation of the free things life offers, quality experiences are possible. Now in its sixth edition copies may be found lying on coffee tables, in bookcases and drawers of people from all walks of life and its still in demand. Thanks to The Dunedin City Council for support in recognition of the project s worth to the wider community. For additional copies, contact the Bipolar Network and Otago Mental Health Support Trust on the 3rd Floor, Queens Building, 109 Princes Street, phone (03) otagomd@ihug.co.nz. To all who choose to use our booklet, our best wishes in finding that something enjoyable to do without spending much. Otago Mental Health Support Trust June,

Comments: Carpark is on the seaward end of Green Island Bush Road off Blackhead Road. If you do not have a car, this beach is accessible by bus take the Corstophine bus from the city centre to Stenhope Crescent (start of Blackhead Road) and walk from there. Second Beach Location: Lies to the west of St Clair Beach, separated from it by a rocky outcrop. Comments: This beach is rocky rather than sandy. This beach is accessible by getting a bus to St Clair, then walking from there. Sandfly Bay Location: 15km east of central Dunedin. Comments: A sandy bay with large dunes. The bay is accessed from Seal Point Road or a walking track from Sandymount. The beach is a popular site for the Hooker s Sea Lion. To get there from Dunedin, take the Highcliff Road and then the Sealpoint Road to car parking at the end. The round hike to Sandfly Bay from this point takes about an hour. St Clair Beach Location: Ten minute drive from the city centre. Comments: This is Dunedin s most popular beach, and is a renowned surfing location. There are regular public transport services from the city. Lawyers Head Location: Located at the eastern end of Dunedin s main beach, St Kilda. It reaches a height of 60m, and is connected to the city by the road John Wilson Ocean Drive, which runs parallel to the beach. Victory Beach Location: On the coast of the Otago Peninsula, 24km away from the Dunedin city centre. It is northeast of the entrance to Papanui Inlet. Comments: This is the longest beach on the Otago Peninsula - it stretches for 3.5km. It is backed by a series of high sand dunes. The beach is a habitat for many rare species, such as the yellow-eyed penguin and sea lions. Access to the beach is via a narrow metalled road which links to Portobello on the Otago Harbour coast and also, via further narrow roads, with the Highcliff Road which runs along the spine of the peninsula. 27
