3 IMPORTANT CITY ELECTION INFORMATION Change in election date as mandated by SB 415 Senate Bill No. 415 (SB 415), the California Voter Participation Rights Act (California Elections Code Sections ) was approved by Governor Jerry Brown on September 1, SB 415 prohibits a local government like the City of El Centro from holding an election other than on a statewide election date if holding an election on a non-concurrent date has previously resulted in a significant decrease in voter turnout. Given that the City of El Centro has experienced a significant decrease in voter turnout on non-concurrent election dates, to comply with SB 415, the City Council adopted Ordinance No to bring the City of El Centro into compliance by November On March 14, 2017, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors approved the City of El Centro s request to consolidate with the Statewide General Election. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of El Centro General Municipal Election has been changed from the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in odd numbered years to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even numbered years, to coincide with the Statewide General Election. Pursuant to the California Elections Code 1301, El Centro Ordinance No , and action taken by the Imperial County Board of Supervisors on March 14, 2017, the General Municipal Election scheduled for November 7, 2017 has been cancelled and the next General Municipal Election will be consolidated with the Statewide General Election on Tuesday, November 6, Pursuant to California Elections Code , due to the change in the election date, the terms of City Council Members, whose terms of office expire in November 2017, will be increased by 12 months until the November election results are certified and declared by the County of Imperial and El Centro City Council for the consolidated General Municipal Elections, in November Terms of City Council Members whose terms of office would have expired in November 2019 will be extended until the election results are certified and declared by the County of Imperial and the El Centro City Council for the November 2020 election. Furniture: Sofa beds, couches, tables, chairs, mattresses, box springs, patio furniture, etc. No Commercial Type loads Yard Waste: Grass clippings, tree trimmings and branches. Large Appliances: Washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, etc. This event is provided for El Centro residential customers only; you must show proof of residency (drivers license & water bill). No businesses and no commercial dumping. Free Collection of Automobile Tires. Please Note: You may dispose of no more than nine (9) tires without a transportation waiver from Environmental Health. Passenger, light duty truck tires and rims accepted. 3

6 Mardi Gras King & Queen Coronation The 2017 City of El Centro Mardi Gras Coronation was a splendid evening of pomp and circumstance as the King and Queen of Mardi Gras were crowned. Alfredo and Monica Negrete were the most popular vote as the City s new King and Queen! The Coronation event is festive and a beautiful showcase of Mardi Gras colors and decoration and is considered the kick off to the actual celebration of Mardi Gras. The Coronation was held on January 26, 2017 at the El Centro Community Center located on 1st Street. 5

7 Veterans Memorial On Veterans Day 2016, the City of El Centro revealed and dedicated a new Veterans Memorial in Bucklin Park. The memorial includes a statue, lighting, and a Wall of Honor that symbolizes the respect for those men and women who have served our country. The Veterans Memorial was a dream fulfilled by former Mayor Jason Jackson. Jackson s father served in the military as well as some of his closest friends. The Veterans Memorial was deeply important to me. I felt we needed a place to pay tribute to all those that served our country. The memorial is located on the South-East side of Bucklin Park. Memorial bricks are available for purchase. The bricks are 8 x 4 and made of granite. You may use the forms within the newsletter or you may call Stacy Cox at

9 Mardi Light Parade and Street Festival The 2017 City of El Centro Mardi Gras Light Parade and Street Festival was held on February 18th in the Civic Center Area of El Centro. Even with daunting rain the City of El Centro Mardi Gras Light Parade and Street Festival went on without a hitch. Revelers packed the streets to take in all the action, lights and sound of Mardi Gras with smiles on their face despite the rainy weather! There were plenty of street vendors, terrific foods as well as face painting and plenty of beads! The floats were elaborate and lit up with plenty of beads being thrown by our Mardi Gras King and Queen Alfredo and Monica Negrete and of course our El Centro Mayor Alex Cardenas was enjoying the people and bead throwing too! The Mardi Gras Light Parade and Street Festival is a Signature Event for the City of El Centro. 10 2017 IMAGINE AWARDS Architect of Change The Vein Clinic The 2017 IMAGINE Awards were held in March at the Crest Event Center in the downtown district of El Centro. The IMAGINE Awards celebrates businesses in the City of El Centro through a nomination system. 11 STREETNAME FROM TO 2017 Street Overlay Project E. ROSS AVE. FAIRFIELD DR EAST CITY LIMITS The City of El Centro is putting your Measure D funding to work by making an investment of $2,715, in city streets. Work on the 2017 Overlay Project is scheduled to begin in June and be completed in November of this year. A full list of streets to be worked on is available at City engineering staff designed the project as part of the yearly street maintenance efforts to maintain and improve the condition of our city streets following recommendations of the City s Pavement Management System. The project was awarded to ATP General Engineering Contractors through a low-bid contract. The work mostly involves slurry seals (1/4" asphalt emulsion and sand mix) that will re-seal streets that were rehabilitated in the past, while performing some thicker overlays on some heavily used streets.
