Control room operator duties included the selection and setting up of stacker/reclaimer machines, monitor the loading of ships and the unloading of coal trains through a modern computer system. Employer: COLLINSVILLE COAL PTY LTD, Collinsville, Queensland. Position: Self-employed Consultant. Period: August November 1983 Responsible for establishment of the 1300W dragline operation. Training new crews in operation and maintenance. Was offered a position close to home and accepted. Employer: BUCYRUS-ERIE COMPANY, South Milwaukee, Wis., USA Position: Senior Erecting Engineer. Period: March August 1983 Responsible for the field erection of all different sized draglines, drills and shovels. Duties included: liaise between customer, contractor, suppliers and Bucyrus- Erie company to facilitate a timely and cost effective machine erection. Guide work crews ( people) on correct erection procedures. Correcting engineering designs and shipping errors. Establishment of construction sites and cost control. Provide on-job training of new erecting engineers. Ensure machine operation to maximum efficiency and assist with training of operatives during start-up of new machines.

Personally responsible for the erection of the two (2) 1370W Draglines at Newlands Coal Pty Ltd, Newlands, Queensland. Commenced, completed and commissioned the first dragline on schedule and the second dragline was 30% completed when I resigned to commence my own consulting business. Position: Field Erecting Engineer Period: March March 1981 Responsible for the field erection of Bucyrus-Erie company machines, i.e. walking draglines, face shovels and overburden drills. Duties included: - Total field erection including mast and boom construction; - Weld testing and supervision; - Field machining; - Structural erection including 150T lifts; - Gear alignment; - Lubrication systems; - Electrical HV and control systems; - Quality control on all facets; - Operator, operation and maintenance personnel training.

This system is now used on all BE draglines). Also introduced a throw-blasting technique to this mine s multi-seam operation. Now reputed to be the best throwblasting technique in the world. Australia - Utah Development Company, Norwich Park Mine, Qld. Responsible for the erection of 2 x 155B shovels, 2 x 45R drills, commissioned 2 x 1370W draglines. Assisted in the establishment of the dragline operations in the correct operating procedures and techniques. Australia - Thiess Bros. Pty Ltd., South Blackwater, Queensland. Responsible for the commissioning of 2 x 1370W draglines, training of dragline operating crews and maintenance personnel. South Africa - Anglo Power Collieries, Kriel Division. Responsible for erecting 1 x 60R drill, 1 x 1570W dragline. Commissioned 2 x 1570W draglines and 60R drill. Responsible for establishing the draglines and mining operation, recruitment and training of the dragline crews which included the writing of a dragline operators manual now being used by many mining companies. Assisted engineering department with pit design planning, dragline and mining machinery scheduling, and the development of various stripping techniques. Responsible for the commissioning of the 1300W dragline, establish the dragline operation and train the dragline operating crews and maintenance personnel. Canada - Syncrude Athabasca Tar Sands Project, Fort McMurray, Alberta 2 x 2570W Draglines; 2 x 8750M Draglines (Marion); 4 x Bucket Wheel Reclaimers. Establish the dragline operations and train the operating crews. Was recommended by the Marion Company to syncrude for this job. Zambia - Mamba Collieries. 1260W Dragline, 45R Drill. Service work on these machines. Tanzania - McWilliam s Diamond Company. Erect 1 x 40R Drill. This drill was erected in record time under extremely difficult conditions. Australia - Thiess Bros., Callide Mine, Biloela, Queensland. 1350W Dragline commissioned, and operating crews trained. South Africa - Anglo American, Arnot Collieries. 1 x 1570W Dragline; 1 x 60R Drill; 1 x 195B Shovel. Erected the 60R Drill and the 195B Shovel. Commissioned the 1570W Dragline. Established and supervised the dragline, mining and drilling operations. Manned and trained operating and maintenance personnel accordingly. Australia - Hammersley Iron Pty Ltd, Mt Tom Price, WA 1 x 60R Drill with automated package. Commissioned drill and set up automatic drilling mode, instructed crews accordingly.

12 Spanish Sahara Desert - NW Africa, Fosfates de BuCraa. 2 x 1370W Draglines; 2 x 195B Shovels; 2 x 45R Drills. This mining operation was quite a challenge, as only the Spanish language was spoken here, also the working conditions left a lot to be desired. However, managed to establish the draglines and mining operations, including the training of operating and maintenance personnel. Duration: 2½ years. Employer: UTAH DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, Goonyella Mine, Qld. Position: Dragline Instructor. Period: January July 1972 Responsible for the recruitment and training of the dragline crews which also included supervising the operation. 2 x 1370W Draglines; 2 x 1350W Draglines. Employer: UTAH DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, Blackwater Mine, Qld. Position: Dragline Operator. Period: July December 1970 Responsible for developing dragline operating procedures and techniques, now widely used. Maintained a high dragline production record.
