1 West Auckland District Tramping Club April 2016 Newsletter no.429 The Presidents report Hello Members What a fantastic job Malcolm has done searching through mountains of information to produce our total Membership register. Colin has generated a Trampers top 12 list since last May which is inspiring for Members to get out there and just DO IT. Congratulations to all on the list. William Murray who joined us in November is certainly keen and showing a few old hands up (me included). Please note subscriptions of $25 are due for payment. Veteran Members may pay the reduced amount of $15. If not paid by 31 st May a penalty of $5 will be payable. You can pay online to WADTC with your name. I apologise I will be overseas from 29 th April to 24 th May and will miss our AGM. I have no reservations in handing the post to Vice President Louis who will conduct all business in my absence. 2 Activities 17 April Takapuna - Long Bay Grade: Easy/Moderate Fare members $15 non members $20 Enjoy a day taking in all the lovely bays of the North Shore from Takapuna to Long Bay. Depending on the tide, (low at 9.45am) we will do a mixture of coastal and cliff top walking. See Te Araroa walkway North Shore for more information. We will bus back from Long Bay to our cars at Takapuna. Leader: Shirley Bulog P: E: sbulog@hotmail.com 18 April Club Night - Kayaking Alaskan Coastline 7.30pm Kelston Community Centre Cnr Great North Road & Awaroa Road Committee Room Paul Hayward will enthral us with his adventures kayaking in the wilderness of the Alaskan Coastline. This will be a very interesting evening, certainly not to be missed. Hope to see you all there. 23/24/25 April Waihi Beach - Sorry Folks, Trip Postponed As Peter is now unavailable to lead this trip it has been referred to Queens Birthday weekend. Currently there have been no alternative trip suggestions made, so officially there is no trip planned for this weekend. If you fancy an outing, how about ringing around and arranging an impromptu tramp? 01 May Omanawanui Track Grade: Moderate Fare: members $5 non members $10 We will leave Glen Eden to drive to Whatipu for a walk up Omanawanui Track. We will have a break at Mt Donald McLean trig then return to Whatipu down the Kura, this should be a reasonably short day, approximately 4.5hrs. If the weather is particularly nice and everyone wants a harder workout we have the option to make it a longer tramp by doing Walker Ridge and Gibbons but this totally depends on circumstances on the day. 3 08 May Tawhitokino Coast Orere 9.30am Grade: Moderate Fare: members $15 non members $20 Very scenic walk visiting a couple of little known beaches South East of Auckland. Walk starts at Waiti Bay (just around the coastline from Kawakawa Bay), along Tawhitokino and Taiwawe beaches 9which are only accessible at certain tides) around a couple of headlands to the lovely seaside village of Orere. Returning a similar route with a couple of diversions. Some rock hoping involved. Ice creams on the way home Leader: Peter Tuohy P: E: tait@slingshot.co.nz 15 May Exhibition Drive Area Grade: Easy/Moderate Fare: members $ Free non members $5 Plan is to walk directly from our regular meeting point of Glen Eden Post Shop up to Titirangi linking up with Exhibition Drive to Arataki Visitor s Centre, possibly incorporating the nature trail. Leader: Alan Harwood P: E: alantinker2@gmail.com 16 May Club Night - AGM Pitcairn Island 7.30pm Kelston Community Centre Cnr Great North Road & Awaroa Road Committee Room AGM Time for a change of guard. Time to reflect on the past year, check on our current status and plan for our future. A couple of committee members are standing down, notably our current President who has done her maximum 3 year term so needs to be replaced. Peter also wants a break from the role of Trip Coordinator. It would be good to have some new blood. Talk Get a fascinating insight to life on one remotest place on earth. Regular Wednesday night walker Betty Christian has lived there most of her life and will share her enthusiasm of the place she loves. 22 May Dunns Bush Puhoi Grade: Moderate Fare: members $10 non members $15 A circuit through the pleasant Dunns bush and on to include an added track or two and some hills to finish in Puhoi after about a 5 hr day with some great views and of the Te Araroa Trail. Trip reports Mangere Mountain 20 March Leader : Lynne Flood There were eight of us, myself, Colin, John, Pam, Paul Thurston, Christine, Bronwyn and a new member Pat. We headed straight across the farm paddocks at Ambury Park, round the crater lake and up Mangere Mountain for a look at the view. Back down and over to Ambury Park and sat for morning tea overlooking the harbour. There were scattered showers but mostly sunny. From there went out to the Island and round the right hand side for lunch and sat looking out over the water. Then the rain came and we ran for shelter. We headed back to Ashcroft Avenue for afternoon tea. `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` `````````````````````````````````````` Social Event Murawai 02 April Nine club members met at Maukatia (Maori Bay) on a very pleasant evening. After our dinner of fish & chips had settled, we wondered down to inspect the gannets. There were a surprisingly large number of gannets still present, especially young ones demanding to be fed, some of them much bigger than their parents. `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` `````````````````````````````````````` Mercer Bay 03 April Leader: Pam Goldie Cliff climbing and hard work out anyone? Well yes. North Shore Tramping Club and West Auckland combined to scale down the cliffs to Mercer Bay. We quickly decided that going backwards was the best option and clung to the ropes and tree roots like little monkeys. It was fun getting down the slippery slope and even more fun to reach the beach. The entrance to the tunnel is at the north end of the beach. Inside the tunnel it was dark and every wave that swept into the tunnel swirled around the bottom of our shorts, we made it out of the tunnel and into the main cave. What an amazing sight! (There are some amazing photos and videos on the internet.) Getting back up the cliff only took about 20 minutes and is so much easier than getting down. Thank you to Ian from North Shore Tramping Club and a special thanks to all the trampers and our two visitors. It was a really great day. Thanks Pam 4

For more information, check out our website. 25 June Mid winter Dinner Alpine Sports Club Hut Anawhata We will be hosting another mid winter dinner, a great night out, staying overnight & a tramp on Sunday. We have had an from a chap in Scotland who would like one.if you can help, contact Peter Tuohy, who would be happy to post him one. ALLEN JAMES Long standing members of our club may recall club member Allen James. Tragically Allen was killed on a club weekend in the Coromandel in Allen's ashes were spread in the Karangahake Gorge at the request of his wife. Allen's (now adult) daughter has ed the club asking if anyone knows where his ashes a spread as Allen's brother is coming to New Zealand and the family would like to visit his resting place. The two most likely member's of our club who would know (Eric Dimock and Phil Jones) have since passed away. If anyone has any information that can be passed on to the James family, please contact Peter Tuohy. MOUNTAIN BIKE FOR SALE Maureen has purchased another bike, therefore her mountain bike is looking for a another home. If you think you might be able to offer a good home, it is yours for $100.
