5 From the FMC newsletter: Fiordland Saved for Now Writing on the wall for Haast Hollyford Hotchpotch The Minister of Conservation's recent decision on the monorail project is being celebrated throughout New Zealand's outdoors community. Federated Mountain Clubs contributed strongly to the campaign led by Save Fiordland. Robin McNeill has passed our congratulations to Save Fiordland's Chairman, Bill Jarvie, "on behalf of all of our 17,000 members, please pass on my heartfelt thanks to all of your members, supporters and helpers. We couldn t have won without you and Save Fiordland s leadership." We are impressed not only by the Minister's decision but by his reasoning and the process that has gone into his final consideration. The Minister considered the purpose for which the land is held and the likely effects of the application, and also, in a different approach from earlier decision makers, realised that it was not merely enough to assess the proposal against the legal status of the land, but that it must be considered against the Statement of Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Area of which it is a part. The Minister also reasoned that the purpose of the Conservation Act required that he consider the financial viability of the project. In his letter to Riverstone Holdings he wrote that, he had to consider "whether a development on public conservation land - especially one involving significant infrastructure - is likely to succeed, is consistent with the purpose of the Conservation Act,which is to promote the conservation of New Zealand's natural and historic resources". We agree! TAC Photos in the FMC Bulletin.. Make sure you read your FMC bulletin this month in order to see our club members Award winning photos! 5 Hi TAC
6 Instruction Snow craft.. WE have snowcraft 1&2 happening in August. Pre-Field Evening: August 5th Field Phase: August 15th 17th Snowcraft 1 Objective Our objective is for you to gain skills that will enable you to safely and confidently move in an alpine environment over easy to moderate terrain AND to have fun. The skills you learn on this course will form a base for you to gain experience by doing. These skills don t just materialise; they need lots of practice, so don t have overly ambitious expectations and be prepared to put in lots of time on the hill to hone your skills. Snowcraft 2 Objective Snowcraft 1 is a pre-requisite for the Snowcraft 2 course; you must have completed our Snowcraft 1 course before you can register for Snowcraft 2. Our objective is for you to build on the skills you have learned and practiced from Snowcraft 1 in alpine hiking and climbing and rope work for mountaineering. The skills you learn on this course will form a base for high alpine climbing and mountaineering, moving safely and working within a team when climbing. Book online at the Instruction web page 6 Hi TAC
7 Gear for Sale.. For sale. Pair of Lowa Ranger boots mens size 9 UK wide fit. These have been worn only twice but were too big for me. $300. Phone Carol Stewart at Just a follow-up to last months photo: Test Your Knowledge.. For those who were wondering, last month s photo was taken in the Kaimanawas. The photo shows my friend Fiona heading over the Umukarikari Range toward Waipakihi Hut. Several of the tracks in this area are now accessible again, through an agreement that FMC has reached with the private land licensee, Helisika. For more information on this see the March 2014 FMC bulletin. As stated the current Topo maps do not show the tracks that go through private land, however the old Kaimanawa Forest Park map did. If anyone happens to have an old Forest Park map, I d love to be able to take a copy from it. Contact Elaine Sinton Ph Club Website and Facebook page Are you up to date with the latest Taranaki Alpine Club news? Don t forget the club has a fantastic Website and a brilliant Facebook page.
