The Eaglet T H E B A Y P O R T A E R O D R O M E S O C I E T Y N E W S L E T T E R Volume 9, Issue 2 Hollywood Goes Hollywood! March 2016 General Membership Meetings: In January our very own Vice President Mike Hollywood Cifelli and his V-tail Bonanza got a guest shot on the FX Network series The Americans that filmed right at the field. The Americans is a drama series that takes place in the 1980s at the tail end of the cold war. Kerri Russell and Matthew Rhys star as undercover KGB Soviet spies posing as an American couple in Washington D.C. For the full story turn to page 3. From The President s Desk: March is here and good flying weather is not far behind. As we start flying it is important as individuals and as a club that we continue to do what we do best. By that I mean you make the plane do what you want it to do and not accept any less. Hold the center line on take offs and landings. Hold your altitude and heading. The only way to do this is practice. Every time you go up, practice, do stalls, steep turns, slow flight, short field take-offs and landings. Learn your plane, fly often. March is also the time to clean up your hangars and get them ready for the first Sunday in April. Anything not approved by the Board has to be removed by March 31. SUNDAY MARCH 6TH 1:30PM SUNDAY APRIL 3RD 1:30PM SUNDAY MAY 1ST SUNDAY JUNE 5TH SUNDAY JULY 3RD SUNDAY AUGUST 7TH SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 4TH SUNDAY OCTOBER 2ND SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6TH Hangar Application Waiting List: BOB ALONSO 1 JOSH TEFEL 2 JOHN CACCAVALLE 3 ELLIOTT RODGERS 4 NICK MERCOURIS 5 PAUL PILIPSHEN 6

The Eaglet The list to open hangars is in Hangar 23. Don't forget to sign up. We have scheduled a lot of events this year. They will be posted in the Newsletter. The first one is the Bayport Blue Point St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 13. We need volunteers on Saturday March 12 to put the SE5 together and on Sunday March 13 to March. Remember, this is our club to use and enjoy. As always, I am available to listen to any ideas, suggestions or complaints. Sincerely, -John Bianco Come Out and March in the Parade! All volunteers are invited to a St Paddy's Day Luncheon after the parade in the Museum Hangar Sunday March 13th. We meet at 8am at the BAS. Quote of the Month: Never fly in the same cockpit with someone braver than you. -Richard Herman Jr. Firebreak 1991 Tom Hutchins Memorial Scholarship Most of our senior members remember Tom Hutchins, member science based careers. Over aviation or other technology or #130, but for those of you who the years it has been awarded don t he was a mechanic and sporadically but thanks to Plans pilot who unfortunately crashed & Program Director Fred his Cessna Airmaster at the Aerodrome back around 1990 and have made efforts to bring it Schmukler and the board, we tragically succumbed to his injuries. His Daughter Mary, member towards it (that was already back. The BAS will put $500 #241, donated money to start a matched by membership Director Sean Martens!) and we scholarship in her fathers name to be given to a young person plan to award it to a lucky Islip who was pursuing a career in Town student who the board of directors will choose from candidates culled from schools like the Suffolk Aviation Academy (formally of BOSCES), various Boy Scout Troops, CAP Squadrons in the town and any other student that is brought to our attention. If you know of someone Photo by Annmarie Bain deserving, or would like to donate, contact Fred at: Iflywaco@aol.com. The Eaglet Open House Sundays Next Month! Editor in Chief: Bob Mott robaniel@aol.com Associate Editor: Steve Martin Page 2 The new year is here and we need volunteers to open the hangars each Sunday for Open House. A sign up board has been put up next to the bathrooms in hangar 23 listing all the Sundays we will need a volunteer (or two) to open the hangars. Members signing up are responsible to be at Bayport by 10am to open the hangars and to make sure they are closed and secured after 4pm. Contact President John Bianco if you have any questions at

The Eaglet Lights, Camera, Action! at the BAS At the crack of dawn on a cold day in early January the BAS was overrun by an army. A literal army from the FX Networks cable television show The Americans. Semis, box trucks, all terrain vehicles, vans, giant lifts, cranes, a 1978 Plymouth Volare, you name it, whatever it takes to produce an episode of a network television show that takes place in the 1980s; it was at Bayport! It all came about very quickly when the producers of the show contacted our Activities Director Jim Mularadelis looking for a rustic airport for a scene in episode #8 of the current season of the show. After meeting Jim and finding what they were looking for at Bayport, a deal was struck to use two BAS hangars plus a bit of the inactive runway for the scene. They also liked Hollywood Cifelli and his V-Tail as well. The necessary arrangements were then made with the Town of Islip to film on the runway and a date was set to shoot. The production company used hangar 23 as a cafeteria to serve the crew and Nick Ziroli s hangar for wardrobe changes. Two hotdog type trucks rolled in the night of the shoot and amazingly had everything they needed to cook and feed around 130 TV crew, actors, directors, Islip officials and a few BAS volunteers! Page 3

Volume 9, Issue 2 Lights Camera Action! at the BAS Continued: Story lines are closely guarded secrets for these shows, so the production company requested that we keep the amount of spectators to a minimum. That s why it was not reported in the Eaglet until now. You will have to watch episode 8 later this year to see Mike s guest starring role. The episode was directed by the shows star, Matthew Rhys, and took over 18 hours to set up and shoot! Great patience was shown by Mike who brought his V-tail Bonanza over for the shoot, Nick Zeroli whose hangar was used for wardrobe changes, and Jen Cifelli, Bob Mott, and Jim Mularadelis all who stayed into the wee cold hours to makes sure everything was cleaned up and put away. Special thanks to TVM Productions for their generous donation to the Aerodrome Society and for getting us on the TV and movie location map for possible future projects. Page 4

Winter Projects at the BAS... Gino is making good progress on his Piper Cub with engine installation almost complete. Bob Fritts has made amazing progress on his Stearman repair after his unfortunate flip over this past spring. The Black Sheep Bar crew has been hard a work completing the annual inspection of Stu and John s 150. Most winter projects usually spend more time looking like this... Page 5

A Few More Winter Projects... Here Bob Fritts and Mike Cifelli put the finishing touches on Bob s new prop prior to running her up last week! John Bianco has changed out his starter for a unit borrowed from Bob Fritts to cure his hard starting woes. Finally! Bob Mott s Hatz biplane engine overhaul is finally moving along. This is the freshly overhauled Lycoming case. The WWI Flying Ace celebrates the recent arrival of Bob s overhauled Lycoming jugs. Page 6

BAS MAILBOX: Membership Director Sean Martens sent out renewals this January (see him if you have not gotten yours) and we got one back from long lost member #85 Gary Rae. Gary s father John was the founder of the BAS, member #1, who lead the charge to save the field in the 70 s and who passed away recently. Gary sent along a few photos of those days. We hope to have him visit us this fall when he comes back for his Bayport high school reunion. BAS founder and first President John G. Rae.
