He was sitting waiting at the Hesket School with the two leaders, Denis and Alan, and happened to remark that on the news there was snow forecast above 600 metres The school was at 650 metres. Before lunch on the Lion Head Track we had our first snow. Then at 908 metres, on the ridge, we got a heavy dump. Luckily, the picnickers had fled but left a struggling fire which was a start, but it was a very cold day. Our walk in October will be pleasant and sunny with maybe golden wattle and spring birds tweeting. The walk begins after a 1.9 km car shuttle to the start at the corner of Romsey Road and Hesket Boundary Road. A pleasant 4 km climb first through Spars Settlement before reaching State Forest. The Lions Head Track is followed til an open ridge of grassed fire break is met. After passing through picnic ground we walk down Macedon Road to the Falls Road to Hesket school. Wednesday 28 November East Kew - Darebin and Donaldson Creeks - Northland Leader: Peter Schultz Phone: Donald Tom Chalton Gillespie 8/5/ /7/2018 Don Gillespie was laid to rest in a bushland grave at Lilydale, followed by a memorial service which was well attended, including Lance and Denis from the MWC. Don was admired by all who knew him, especially for his love of the environment. He was born at Port Lincoln and was the eldest of four children. His family was relocated often as his father was a station master with the S.A. Railways, and often aboriginal children were the only ones to play with. Growing up in a railway family, Don was privileged to be able to drive a steam engine as a boy. Don began school at the age of eight and his academic ability was rewarded with several scholarships. Whilst at Adelaide High School one of Don s teachers was given a set of glass blowing instruments, and Don s curiosity led him to learn this art. This gained him an internship at the University of Adelaide and graduating in Chemistry. During the 2nd World War, the government took Don out of University to organize the building and management of a chemical factory that made paracetamol, for supplies from Germany had ceased. 13

14 At 25 Don married Joan and they had four children, including Barbara who was at the funeral. At the end of the war Don was seconded from the Australian Scientific Liaison Office in London to the British Army. He was sent on a mission in war torn Germany to locate a German scientist for projects to be set up in Australia. On his return to Australia Don joined the CSIRO, where he had important administrative positions. He told me once that his real love was chemistry research. The next chapter of Don s life began when he and Joyce met while working at the CSIRO. Don introduced Joyce to his farm at Smith s Gully, where at weekends they would escape, and during the week would live at Camberwell. With the CSIRO locating H.Q. to Canberra, Don decided to become a full time farmer. Over the years he successfully farmed beef cattle, including Charolais which he bred using artificial insemination. Don and Joyce moved to another local farm which they named Black Cameron. Here in his seventies, with amazing energy and Joyce s assistance, a mud brick house was built. Shortly after, they purchased 147 acres at Bullock Island in South Gippsland, where many of us have camped - a truly unique place. Don was a long-time member of the Club where he enjoyed many trips and companionship with fellow walkers. Being a keen skier for some years, Don would ski at Mt Buller. Joyce and Don would often be at Club luncheons, which included last Christmas at Ferntree Gully. Don and Joyce had been together for 54 years, and had a wonderful life including so much interesting travel. Don died at home. Denis Ward, with help from Joyce and her niece.
