1 -Please note that all information stated in this resource was information that was collated well before the start of the 2011 RWC (so there is a possibility that there have since been changes to teams, times, venues etc). Although I began writing this resource prior to the Christchurch earthquake in February, I have made amendments to incorporate the new changes after it was decided that Christchurch was not able to be a venue. -There are two documents to this resource. The first being the actual tasks/contracts, and the second being the assessment example sheets, teachers notes, and answers. -Please note that although the ideas and format are my own, the images and much of the content is not. These have come from various sources, with most of it being put together from information gathered from the internet. -A student contract log is included so the child and teacher can keep track of which contracts have been completed and which haven t. This could be enlarged to A3 to allow more room for the child to write in the boxes (if using the Print version). -Three blank student task sheets have also been provided where those contracts ask for written answers, but where there is no room on the particular contract for the student to write the answer (mainly for those using the Online version). -The majority of these contracts will require the child/class to do further study/research on the topic (which is also part of the purpose of the contracts). There are also quite a few Hands On practical tasks throughout the unit. -Answers are only provided if this is stated on the contents page. -A few further ideas are also listed at the end of this resource. -Pages could be enlarged for group work (blown up from A4 to A3), and/or done as a paired/group/class project. -I have included a number of information sheets which have been included as reference pages for any further in-depth study, without having to go searching for information yourself. These could be enlarged to A3 size so they could be used in groups rather than having to give a copy of each page to each child. -An example blank unit planning and assessment/evaluation sheet has also been attached at the end of the document. If you need more room, simply enlarge it to A3. I have given two possible examples-one for NZ and one for QLD/AU. -I have tried to make activities varied so they can be done by a wide age group. This resource is a free shared document from one teacher to another (there are no strings attached and no donation/payment is required). This resource was written as a starting point to hopefully save teachers a bit of time, to have something a bit different for their class/school, and to assist with promoting the game of rugby and New Zealand. I hope you find some of it of use. As always, there are no rules with this resource except your own. Please feel free to use them in any way which best suits you and your class/school. C. 5 The 13 venues for the 2011 Rugby World Cup were confirmed on 12 March This was amended in 2011 as a result of the February 22 nd, 2011 Christchurch quake which meant that Christchurch was unable to be a venue for any games. A number of the venues announced are undergoing redevelopment to increase capacity for the event. The proposal was to build the new stadium seating 70,000 on the Auckland waterfront. After much public outcry, and lack of support from the Auckland Regional Council, the proposal was dropped in favour of the redevelopment of Eden Park. The redevelopment of Eden Park's Southern and South Western stands was completed during Some consents are still to be approved but the Government has announced it is considering passing a law bypassing the consent process to allow all the stadiums' redevelopment to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup.

7 The History of the Webb Ellis Cup Either Martin Johnson or George Gregan will brandish aloft the Rugby World Cup. On its face is engraved 'The International Rugby Board' and below that arch the name of the trophy: 'The Webb Ellis Cup'. The Cup is quite a bit older than the World Cup. The Rugby World Cup was first played in 1987 but the Cup itself, the actual trophy, was fashioned in 1906 and chosen in February 1987 as a suitable trophy for the World Cup to be played in New Zealand and Australia in May and June that year. John Kendall-Carpenter, the famous England forward and the Chairman of the Rugby World Cup and Air Commodore Bob Weighill, the secretary of the IRB and a former England forward, went round to Garrard, the crown jeweller in Regent Street, London - a fashionable place indeed. Richard Jarvis, the Managing Director of the company, brought the Cup down from the vault and showed it to the two men. Eventually Ronnie Dawson of Ireland, Keith Rowlands of Wales, Bob Stuart and Dick Littlejohn of New Zealand and the Australians Nick Shehadie and Ross Turnbull approved of the choice. They named it 'The Webb Ellis Cup'. The Cup was crafted on Garrard's workshop in 1906, a Victorian version of a cup fashioned in 1740 by the gold and silversmith Paul de Lamerie ( ), whose parents, Huguenots, had fled to London and set up a shop in Soho. The Cup is silver gilded in gold, 38 centimetres tall with two cast scroll handles. On one there perches the head of a satyr, on the other the head of a nymph, the nymph, beautiful spirit of nature, forever safe from the randy aspirations of the goat-man. The terminals are a bearded mask, a lion mask and a vine. Garrard's dates back to the first half of the 18th century and had royal connections from its beginning. In 1792 Robert Garrard, originally an apprentice at the company became a partner and then took control of the business. In 1843 Queen Victoria appointed Garrard's Crown Jewellers, as they still are. One of their stressful tasks was the recutting of the Koh-i-Noor. Its first famous sporting trophy was the Royal Yacht Squadron's Cup presented in 1848 by the Marques of Anglesey. It is better known as the America's Cup, from the first winner of the cup in 1851, the yacht America.. The firm moved to its Regent Street premises in the Fifties after Henry Garrard died and with him the Garrard line. Garrard's amalgamated with the Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company, founded in 1898, but retained the Garrard name.

19 2011 Rugby World Cup Maths Task 1: Roman Numerals: (a) Using Roman Numerals, write the number for this year s Rugby World Cup here in New Zealand? (b) What would the Roman Numerals be for the next Rugby World Cup (2015)? MMXV (d) What does XXX stand for? 30 (c) What would the Roman Numerals have been for the last Rugby World Cup (2007)? MMVII (e) What does the XIX stand for? 19 Task 2: The Stadiums (a) Using the data from Information 1 sheet, make up your own graph which shows the capacity (how many people each venue will hold) of each venue. What kind of chart you use is up to either your teacher or yourself. Make sure you give it a title, and that the results are shown in a clear and concise way (that people can clearly understand it). Then write three questions (and answers) on your chart about what you have found out. MMXI Task 3: The Host Cities and Team Bases (a) Using the data from the Information 2 sheet, make up your own tally chart and graph which shows the amount of different teams and the different towns and cities they are being hosted in. What kind of chart you use is up to either your teacher or yourself. Make sure you give it a title, and that the results clearly show the results from the tally chart. Then write three questions (and answers) on your chart about what you have found out. You may choose to split this into two different graphs or combine them into one graph. The choice is yours as long as the results are clearly shown (and understandable). Task 4: It s Kick Off Time-Match/Pool start times (a) Using the data from the Information 4 ( ) sheet, make up your own tally chart and graph based on one of the following schedules: (a) Schedule by Date, or (b) Schedule by Pool, or (c) Schedule by Venue. You can choose (or your teacher will choose for you) what kind of chart you use. You will also be required to give a small presentation to the class to explain what your graph shows, so remember to make it informative but also exciting. How you decide to present it is up to either your teacher or yourself. Make sure you give it a title, and that the results clearly show the results from the tally chart. Then write three questions (and answers) on your chart about what you have found out.

20 Below are a few other ideas the class/school could do. This could be as an individual, group and/or class/school contract/activity. As always, there are no rules but your own. The children will also no doubt come up with their own ideas. Some possible extra tasks could include... Making up their own special edition newspaper, Using the currency codes, children make up as many words as they can by only using each letter once, Using the different countries, the children could find out and make up their own timetable/itinerary etc based on the distances/travelling time from New Zealand, Children could make up their own NZ/International credit card/travellers cheques etc, Make a model or mobile of the actual cup, an event arena, giant rugby ball, etc, Make up their own RWC Council, Make up a team/player ID Card which has a distinct NZ and World Cup theme, Make up a timetable pamphlet for the players and/or spectators, Make up your own public transport company which will service the visiting nations to and from games (including such things as name, routes, timetables, costs etc), Make up your own unique commercial item which portrays NZ and the 2011 RWC which you would give to the players and sell to the spectators (be unique), Make up their own 2011 RWC Kiwi Food Item suggestions for overseas visitors, Bake their own cake/biscuit (including writing the recipe) that has a RWC and/or NZ theme to it (such as a biscuit/cake with the RWC colours, a kiwi, a mini RWC Cup, rugby ball etc), Invent their own travel agency which puts together a complete 2011 RWC travel and accommodation package, Make up their own art poster and /or make up a commercial advertising campaign for the 2011 RWC, Pictionary/dictionary using terms/images of the RWC, Listing the differences between such things as temperatures, international calling, laws, time zones etc between the different visiting countries, Design a new NZ currency just for the RWC, Design a RWC passport, Design a healthy meal for teams, Invent a song/rap with a RWC theme to it, Finding information about the different languages, foods etc of the visiting nations, Finding out the differences and similarities of children their own age and what school life is like in other nations who are visiting New Zealand, Design a new and/or modified RWC, Design and make a board game or similar with a 2011 RWC theme, Make up a class/school newsletter which has things about the 2011 RWC in it, Design, and run a mini RWC set of games at their own school. Players could be from other classes or even the whole school. The main point here is that the children would design the rules for the different levels and run the games themselves rather than it being run by the teachers. It could also be videoed by other children. Make up a junior children s picture/text/audio/video and/or colouring book for younger children.
