1 2011 FAIRFAX MEDIA YOUNG PRINT LIONS COMPETITION ENTRIES NOW OPEN 4 April 2011 New Zealand s top young advertising talents are invited to enter the 2011 Fairfax Media Young Print Lions competition, where a team of two win the chance to compete on the international stage at Cannes. The competition is for young professionals at the start of their careers and this year the category is print. Teams comprised of an art director and copywriter respond to a brief to create a print advertisement. The brief is available now via and the winning team then go on to attend and compete at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Group Sales and Marketing Manager, Sandra King says As the New Zealand representative for Cannes Young Lions for the past six years, Fairfax Media is proud to once again get behind our emerging talent within the advertising industry. We are looking for two superb creatives who shine in our own New Zealand competition, to then attend Cannes Lions Advertising Festival and compete against other Young Lions from around the world. The pressure is huge and the standards are high, but kiwis have a good reputation for putting together winning ads, says King. This is a unique opportunity that will not only expose the winning team to some of the greatest creative advertising minds in the world, but will also offer the agency that they are representing some fantastic global exposure, says King.

This is the sixth year Fairfax Media has run the competition, which is one of the many initiatives from Fairfax Media aimed at supporting the development of New Zealand s creative talent. 3 Fairfax Media Young Print Lions 2011 Competition Conditions of Entry Entry Background Consumers have never had as much control, choice and participation with their media exposure, consumption and preferred brands, as they do now. The challenge for the advertising industry is to achieve cut through, relevancy, engagement and an emotional connection with the target audience. The Fairfax Media Print Lions 2011 competition is on the hunt for a print advertisement that delivers on this challenge in a creative, innovative and effective way, that can also traverse to other channels. Eligibility 1. Fairfax Media Young Print Lions 2011 competition is open to all parties involved in the use of media for advertising purposes, throughout New Zealand, such as advertising agencies, media agencies or advertisers. Entry is only open to those young people who are currently working in the industry. 2. You must be a team comprising of one (1) copy writer and one (1) art director. Both entrants must have valid New Zealand passports or permanent residence in New Zealand. 3. You must be born on or after 25 June 1982 and send proof of your birthday e.g. a copy of your passport or driver s licence. 4. Only one entry per team. 5. Each entry must relate either to one advertisement or campaign. 6. Entries cannot be made without the prior permission of your employer. 7. All Fairfax Media Young Print Lions entries submitted must be designed for implementation 8. Entrants agree that the winning creative work from Fairfax Media Young Print Lions 2011 competition will be available for Fairfax Media to incorporate into their upcoming marketing campaigns. 9. All entries must comply with voluntary or regulatory codes of practice and to ASA standards. Prize The winning pair (copywriter and art director) will be sent to the Cannes Lions 2011 Advertising Festival in France in June 2011, courtesy of Fairfax Media. The pair will receive airfares, transfers, accommodation, and conference registration. You will represent New Zealand at the international Young Lions Print Competition. Once there, you will be given a brief to execute. You will be up against some of the world s best young creatives and will be asked to turn around an award winning ad in just 24 hours. It is highly recommended that you have Mac skills to bring your idea to life. If you win, you will be 1

4 crowned Young Print Lion of the world. Airlines and accommodation to be determined by Fairfax Media. Visas for the travel (if required) will be the responsibility of the winning team. The successful pair must agree to attend all relevant creative workshops and seminars throughout the remainder of the week in Cannes. Your Challenge You and your partner should create a print ad which is an extension or refresh of Fairfax Media s current Arm Yourself advertising campaign. This phase two should reinforce the Fairfax Media Network s position as the leading provider of integrated cross channel ad sales solutions. It should highlight Fairfax Media and demonstrate their Ad Network as innovative, dynamic and visionary in what it offers to clients. A stand out from other media competitors. Background: The Fairfax Network brand was successfully created in 2005 to provide a single point of contact for Fairfax channels in New Zealand. These include print, online, mobile, tablet, and digital TV. The Brief The brand quickly evolved to providing agencies with a one-stop shop for integrated multi-media communications solutions that are focused on meeting clients objectives, needs and goals. Fairfax Media s Ad Network focuses on outcome for clients innovative, strategic ideas that can traverse through channels. The Fairfax Media Ad Network is innovative, dynamic and visionary in what we do. Goal: Reinforce the Fairfax Network s position as the leading provider of integrated advertising solutions across print and other channels. Key insight: Fairfax Network s integrated sales structure offers agencies and clients a single strategic point of contact across Fairfax s multiple platforms. The approach is customer centric and offers an ease of doing business like no other media provider. Target audience: Primary media directors and creative directors, media planners, media buyers, agency heads and marketing professionals Secondary advertising industry representatives, PR professionals Other considerations: The campaign should differentiate the Fairfax Network from other media owners brands to ensure Fairfax s current proposition of Arm Yourself is maintained. 2

5 Judging The award winning entries will be selected by the industry s key creative executives. Judges decision is final. The judges voting will be based on two cornerstones: Innovation (50%). Creative Execution (50%). Material Requirements and Conditions 1. Entry must be completed on the Fairfax Media entry form. 2. You must mount your work on foam-core board no bigger than A3. 3. Ensure all supporting material is labelled with company name and campaign title. 4. The decision of the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. 5. No extensions are available and entries arriving after the closing date will be excluded from judging. 6. Entry is free. Only one entry per team. Different teams from one agency is allowed. 7. The entrant grants Fairfax Media permission to showcase the entries at an award presentation and other times deemed appropriate by Fairfax Media.
