Piedmont Aero Club Volume, 7 Issue 5 June 2018 From the President. With the start of another fiscal year for the PAC and with several new members joining us, I wanted to welcome you. The Piedmont Aero Club is a group of aviation enthusiasts who educate one another, fellowship with one another, take flying adventures with one another, etc. all in the name of aviation camaraderie. Indeed, our club is like a buffet -- you may not be able to partake of everything, but you will really enjoy what you try. Thanks to Al Lawless, there are many exciting things on the horizon. With that said, if you have ideas for us as a club then please let Al, other board members, or me know. This club is for all's benefit, and we are lucky to have it. 3 Piedmont Aero Club Page 3 Monthly Meeting at World of Beer Our second meeting using the new format was held at World of Beer at 1310 Wstover Terrace. Even though some of our regulars weren't able to attend, we had about eleven members there. That included two new members Oscar Burbano and William Briscoe. Except for getting to know the two new members, there was no business handled at this meeting. Therewas a little banter concerning the clergy, but most of the discussion was just general hanger talk. Our July meeting will be a Joint cookout with the Hondajet Motorcycle Club, at All Lawless house. See the flyer in this newsletter.
Piedmont Aero Club Page 4 A Day on Smith Mountain It started out as a dreary, kind of cool day. When I arrived at Air Harbor Airport on time, at 8:00am. No one was there, so I figured that I hadn t checked my for the latest communication saying the trip was cancelled because of impending bad weather. A quick call to Al, who was my ride, said that everything was still on, and he was on his way. Joe Joplin and I were hitching a ride with Al. We were air born about 9:15 and the weather had started to improve. The three of us were the first to arrive, then Ned and Masa, followed by Bud and Eric. Eric and I didn t pilot, but the other five flew either the Piper Cub, the seaplane, or both. The instructors were Parker Middleton for the seaplane and Jack Phillips for the Piper Cub. Joe, Masa, Bud, and Ned flew the seaplane, and Al, Joe, and Masa flew the Piper. It was late as the flights were finishing, so Al ordered an assortment of sandwiches from Portside Grill & Bar, a lakefront eating establishment. And Al and I got to talk with a couple of long time lakeside cabin owners, one of whom was from the Greensboro area. Al took off around 4pm for the trip home, and we were all tied down by 5:30. It was a great day. Al did it again. Hip, hip, hooray for our activities chair! What kind of welcome Is this?

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 7 Aero Club Triple Tree Young Aviators Fly/Drive-in. LeRoy Walker This Memorial Day weekend saw the inaugural Young Aviators fly-in at Triple Tree Aerodrome, one of the most iconic grass strips in the nation. It is in South Carolina and is known for its putting-green-perfect 7,000-foot-long grass strip, Because rentals can t legally land at grass strips, I hitched a ride with Chris Malone and one of his co-workers and her son. Chris planed that we would leave about 9:00am and we were taxiing away from Signature at 9:15am. It was a beautiful flight down and when we entering the Triple Tree Arrival, there was very little traffic in the pattern. We landed on the beautifully manicured grass strip. And, like I imagined an Oshkosh arrival, we were asked if we were asked what our planned stay was, and were directed to thee appropriate parking area. Very efficient! One of the key things I wanted to see was.. Yes the lawn mowers. AOPA did a piece on Triple Tre about a year ago, and one of the things that was highlighted was the massive lawnmowers used to keep the runway and grounds cut. They were awesome. Triple Tree Aerodrome is really impressive. It s not just the unbelievable grass runway, it has an education building, 2 areas for static displays, and an entertainment area where I saw them grilling about 100 chickens at one time. And we can t forget the maintenance area where those unbelievable mowers are housed :-). I only sat in on two of the presentations that were given by EAA folk. I was a little disappointed that they seemed to be the canned EAA pitches, rather than some developed specifically for the youth. But, I was impressed with Triple Tree. And I hope that, in the future, I can hitch a ride to one of the major functions they do every year.

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 10 Aero Club A Fly-in at Asheboro Regional Airport There was a Fly-in at the Asheboro Regional Airport on the same weekend as the Youth in Aviation Fly-in at Triple Tree. As far as I know, no one from our club attended the Asheboro event. However, a friend of Bud s did attend and shared some pictures with us. It looks like there we static displays of antique military aircraft and old cars, and maybe some model planes got to strut their stuff. I couldn t convince Bud s friend to provide any commentary, but we do have the pictures. Enjoy!

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 12 Aero Club Pilot's Tip of the Week (from Pilotworkshop.com) Contacting Flight Service Featuring John Krug Subscriber question: "I still like contacting Flight Service Stations for in-flight weather or flight planning. But I never understood what to do when there's an R listed by the frequency. A quick review would be helpful." - Kevin W. John: "Flight Service Stations (FSS) provide a variety of services including pilot briefings, weather observations, pilot reports, flight plan processing, search and rescue services, assistance to lost aircraft and aircraft in emergencies. Normally, you would communicate with Flight Service through the frequencies shown on the sectional chart. The Flight Service frequencies are listed in a box above certain VOR stations. The most common frequencies are 122.2, 122.4, or Also, most GPS (or ipad apps like ForeFlight) have a listing of the nearest Flight Service frequencies. At times because of the aircraft altitude or distance from the station, you may not be able to receive and transmit on the same frequency. To increase reception range, some Flight Service Stations are also able to transmit over VORs and other Navaids. The notation R shown after the frequency indicates Receive capability (i.e R). This means that the FSS can receive on and transmit over the VOR frequency. You need to configure your aircraft radio and audio panel properly to utilize this feature. First, tune your Com radio to Then tune the Nav radio to the VOR you wish to use. Select both the Nav and the Com audio through your audio panel. You may also have to select voice on your Nav radio. On your initial call to the FSS, make sure you state the frequencies that you are transmitting and receiving on. The FSS specialist may be monitoring multiple frequencies. For example, you would call Rancho Murieta Radio, Cessna One Two Three Alpha, transmitting 122.1, listening Redding VOR, over."
Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 13 Aero Club Pilot's Tip of the Week (from Pilotworkshop.com) Logging Safety Pilot Time Featuring Jeff Van West Subscriber question: "Can I log PIC, or at least SIC time when acting as a safety pilot for my friend doing practice instrument approaches?" - Jackie Q. "Jeff: "Logging time as a safety pilot is a tried-and-true way of two pilots building pilot-in-command, or PIC time on one flight. To do it legitimately, however, you two must agree beforehand that the safety pilot will be acting PIC for the flight. The relevant FAR is 61.51, and the relevant sections are (e) (i) and (e) (iii). Paragraph (e)(i) says you may log PIC when you're the sole manipulator of the aircraft controls and you're rated for that aircraft. Paragraph (e)(iii) says you may log PIC when you're acting as PIC of an aircraft under a regulation where more than one pilot is required. FAR (c)(1) says that during simulated instrument conditions, a control seat must be occupied by a pilot rated for the aircraft. Put them together and the sole manipulator can log PIC time, and the safety pilot acting as PIC can also log PIC time. The essential thing to understand is that acting as PIC is different from logging PIC time. Only one pilot can act as PIC, and that pilot is ultimately responsible for the flight. But that pilot doesn't need to be the one manipulating the controls. There are a few caveats to this system. A safety pilot must have at least a private pilot certificate, so a sport or recreational pilot can't act as a safety pilot at all, let alone log PIC time for it. To act as PIC, the safety pilot must have the recent flight experience per FAR 61.57, as appropriate for the aircraft and conditions of flight, such as night currency. They must also have a current medical or qualify for BasicMed. Essentially, they have to be legal enough to operate the aircraft themselves with a passenger. The pilot under the hood isn't a "required crew member" when the safety pilot is acting as PIC, so they are like a passenger from a regs point of view. The safety pilot can only log PIC time when the other pilot is under the hood. Presumably, that won't be true for takeoff and landing at the very least. You can't log SIC time as a safety pilot, that's reserved for aircraft requiring two or more crew members by certification, not simply the regulations covering the flight. It doesn't apply to your question, but there's an oddity here you should know. If the safety pilot isn't acting as PIC, then the safety pilot is a required crewmember during simulated instrument flight. FAR 61.3 (c) says that a required crew member must have a valid medical certificate--basicmed is not enough. So if your safety pilot flys under BasicMed, he or she must be in the role of acting PIC - and then you can both log PIC time."
