Piedmont Aero Club Volume, 6 Issue 8 September 2017 From the President. The ultimate Stress Test part IV...No News. Still waiting Concerning my attempts to go BasicMed. To summarize for those who are just joining in. Back in April, just 5 days before the implementation of BasicMed, The FAA notified me that they were requiring a full battery of tests or else they would deny my 3rd class medical. Since then, they have denied my Medical, Reinstated my Medical and told me they are going to do it all again before my 3rd class Medical expires in September Geez...the saga continues... and continues... This month, no news from the FAA. Their last communication stated that they were planning to notify me on or about Sept 17 and that they would require a follow-up CVE with exercise stress test and a current status regarding diabetes. Due 9/17. On a good note, I have received copies of letters written by NC Senator Thom Tillis to the FAA on my behalf. Additionally, my Home state Senator, Ted Cruz, has made inquiries on my behalf. Sadly, you'll all have to wait with me till next month's newsletter to see what happens. Maybe a few inquiries from influential Senators will convince them to just drop it? We'll see?. I hope. 3 Piedmont Aero Club Page 3 PAC Dinner Meeting - August 17, Al Lawless This meeting kicked off at 6pm with hot sandwiches provided by Burke Street Pizza. We chowed well on meatball, sausage, and chicken parm and Philly cheesesteaks. All good and all gone by meeting s end. The meeting kicked off with a few announcements from Wes then lead into a deep discussion about what to do with club funds. The discussion went considerably longer than expected because there were more differing opinions than expected. While not necessarily in the sequence discussed, the following synopsis provides the gist. We started off saying the 6 August officers meeting determined the PAC should start spending the ~$15,000 in our account rather than save it for an airplane. Officers all agreed aircraft ownership is no longer in the scope of what the PAC should be about. At this dinner meeting, Bob Vinroot enthusiastically injected the success story his other club has with an airplane and how they made it work. We spent significant time discussing a club plane s pros & cons but once again determined that the PAC is in no position to own an airplane. We agree it would be great if interested individuals got together and formed a partnership, but this would not be legally or financially tied to the PAC. Much like we are presently doing with Wes Skipper, the PAC can connect any owners willing to make their plane available to PAC members. With this option firmly behind us, we narrowed the discussion about how to spend our money. After going around the room numerous times, including thoughts about helping non-members, we settled on the following as minimums Get nametags for all members who need them New PAC shirts for everyone (or hats we need a committee to drive this) Continue sponsoring events such as simulator flying, family bowling night, cookouts Continue buying meals for all dinner meetings Re-start buying meals to breakfast/brunch fly-ins To expand membership, we ll host a PAC Membership Drive fly-in at Air Harbor this fall. We ll get a mailing list of all local pilots and send them an invitation to a cookout and say hello. Activity coordinator Al Lawless requires volunteers to pull this off, so please contact him <alan_lawless@haci.honda.com>. Left unresolved at the end of this meeting was the officer s proposal to also use PAC funds to purchase door prizes to be given to members attending various events. Discussions did not get to the point of establishing any cost limits. Before that level of detail, we need to decide if such giveaways are something we should do at all. If no, then the above items will remain the only things we spend on. If yes, then we ll debate how often and how much.

Page 4 Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Aero Club Page 4 PAC Dinner Meeting - August 17, (cont) Per our dinner meeting debate, the primary argument FOR giveaways is that giving back directly to members (albeit randomly) will enhance member experience, enthusiasm, and attendance. This might even help to recruit more members. The primary argument AGAINST giveaways is that it benefits only lucky members in attendance - i.e. not everyone. A second argument is that money is better spent on events for all. This dinner meeting had a preliminary vote on this topic and saw 7 members for door prize giveaways and 7 against. Let s continue the discussion with more members and vote later. In the meantime, please send your thoughts to President Wes so he can share them. Other suggestions that came up for future discussion: the PAC should Establish a culture where every member is expected to work at least one event per year. Reward members who work a certain number of volunteer hours. Something like a nice PAC windbreaker for assisting with 2 or 3 events? The last 30-minutes of the night was a simple hangar flying session where Al emceed conversations about all kinds of airplane questions. Topics included ASI yellow and red arcs, V-tails vs. conventional tails, Hershey bar wings, swept wings, and airscrews. This was well-received, so members can expect more of these Stump The Dummy talks at future meetings.

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 8 Aero Club Pilot's Tip of the Week (from Pilotworkshop.com) Subscriber question: Following The Glideslope Below D.A. Featuring Bob Nardiello "Recently, I was flying an ILS approach at night, and the PAPI lights were distorted due to heavy rain, but the runway was clearly in sight. In this case, can you follow the ILS glideslope below decision altitude for additional vertical guidance, or should you ignore it once you have the runway in sight?" - Drew W. Bob: "The glideslope on an ILS approach can serve a useful purpose below decision altitude of an ILS approach because it can provide approach guidance over the runway. The glideslope itself emanates from a point adjacent to the two big white boxes painted on a precision instrument runway. Following the glide slope, all the way down to these white boxes will bring you to a point about 1,000 feet beyond the runway threshold, which is a very safe place to touch down. Staying on the glide slope keeps you safely away from the approach lights or other obstacles. Next week's tip: "Any traffic please advise" To stay on the glideslope until safely over the runway requires that the pilot avoid diving to the threshold and, more importantly, that the pilot avoids retarding the power when breaking out - whether at DA or above. Remember that decision altitude typically occurs about ½ mile from the runway threshold at an altitude above the ground of only about 200 feet. When going visual, make only minor adjustments in power and stay on the glideslope until actually over the runway."

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 10 Aero Club 2017 Eclipse at Triple Tree Aerodrome by Wes Parker The path of this year's Total Solar Eclipse passed directly over the Triple Tree Aerodrome. That coincidence was simply too tempting for Bud and myself to pass up. As we made our plans to fly down for the eclipse, I was contacted by local TV reporter Kandace Redd for some background on flying during a total eclipse. After talking with her for a while, she decided to come out, and do a short TV segment on our flight. Bud and I did our best to answer all of her questions, and let the general population know that airplanes do not magically lose propulsion, or the wings stop working when the lights go out. My advice when she asked "what to do during the total darkness?" I said "don't bump into anything"

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 11 Aero Club Monday morning came, and we prepared to fly Bud's Maule down to SC00. We were surprised when ATC told us the ATC System was saturated, and there would be no flight following available. Monday morning set a record number of general aviation flights in the air at once. Fortunately Bud and I had ADS-B with traffic information, and we were aware of all the other traffic that was completely obscured by the South Carolina haze. There were at least 20 other airplanes nearby, as we approached the 7000 ft. grass runway at Triple Tree. Using the ADS-B we were able to easily sequence the Maule into line for an uneventful landing. After landing, we found that we were actually a last minute arrival to the event. There were already other airplanes parked around the grass runway.

Piedmont Aero Club Piedmont Page 12 Aero Club The partial eclipse started soon after we arrived and over the next hour, we noticed the stifling heat begin to steadily subside. The birds got quiet, and the night time insects started buzzing about. The only noise during the eclipse was the collective gasp, followed by cheering of the thousands of people gathered for the event. For those of you that have never experienced a TOTAL eclipse...all that I can say, is "don t miss the next one!!" As if the eclipse weren't already a once in a lifetime event, there was one aviator there at Triple Tree that now has a story to top everyone else's... This pilot decided to make a flight during the totality, and during that flight, he got the shock of his life...while taking off of the grass runway during the partial eclipse he experienced a partial engine failure. After he turned downwind to return for a landing, he experienced a TOTAL engine failure, during a TOTAL eclipse. As he disappeared below the trees, I pulled my glasses off, grabbed my camera, and took this picture. Looking at this picture you can get a really good idea just how dark it was. Think about this...a bunch of people out on the field, wearing dark glasses looking up at the eclipse with a totally silent airplane approaching, making an emergency dead stick landing. Fortunately these aviation people had the sense to clear the runway at the first sign of trouble. Masa is the only other person that I know, that can even come close to this story.
