6 4 The English News Weekly Podcast Jaime Selwood 2017 Listening / Reading Listening An Airport Not for the Fainthearted! 10 Mistakes Help Listen / Read the news story below circle the 10 words that are mistakes! 282 An Airport Not for the Fainthearted! 1 Every year more than 112,000 flights take off and land safely all around the world air travel is one of the safest forms of transport. Every day new models of airplanes are designed to make flying more comfortable and safer, whilst most of the busiest airports are continually being upgraded. Yet, there are some airports in the world that are not filled with luxury duty-free shops, restaurants, parks and lounges. These airports are only visited by those passengers who do not frighten easily. Why? Because they are the scariest, and most dangerous airports anywhere on Earth! 2 A new report has listed the 13 most dangerous airports to be found anywhere around the world. These locations vary from snowy Caribbean islands, to highaltitude mountain ranges and one airport that is permanently covered in ice. The other trait that most of these 13 airports have is short runways. Very, very, very short runways. In fact the airport that is considered to be 3 rd most dangerous airport in the world - Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport on the European island of Saba has a runway that is only 399 metres long 1,500 metres shorter than the global average. 3 Some of the other most fear-inducing airports in the world include Barra Airport in Scotland, Ice Runway in Antarctica and Tenzig-Hillary in Nepal. Barra Airport s runway is located on a massive Scottish island and the runway is actually just a beach! Ice Runway on Ross Island Antarctica can only be used during summer months as snow storms prevent landing any other time of the year. Whilst Tenzig- Hillary near Mount Everest in Nepal has a runway of just 458 metres with a 610 metre slide into a valley at the end of the runway so pilots have to be very sleepy! 4 However you shouldn t worry too much most of these airports are only visited by people who need to go to these sandy locations. Also flying is a safe way to travel a person only has a one in 11 million chance of being killed in an air crash. So, next time you get nervous about flying you should take comfort that the airport you are flying to won t have a long runway, located on a beach or with a 600 metre drop. Unless you ARE flying to one of those airports then probably close your eyes! Wrong Word 10 Mistakes 1: To 6: To 2: To 7: To 3: To 8: To 4: To 9: To 5: To 10: To [384 Words] END OF PART 3
