Then write a correct word for each space. 319 Trains, Busses, Ferries and Horses But No Planes 1 This week s ENW stars by asking our 1: to imagine that they need to travel from London to Hong Kong to visit a family member. So, what would you do? Probably visit a travel agency or go online and arrange a flight that fitted your price range. Cathay Pacific offers a return ticket in 2: class for 656. Maybe you prefer a little more comfort and so you could fly with British Airways for 1,112 and travel in premium economy. However, if you are one 3: retired British couple you reject that chance to fly to East Asia and decide to complete the 19,300 km journey by public transport. 2 The journey undertaken by Phil and Emma Whiting from Oxford in the south of England would normally take around 12 hours of flight time. Instead their trip to visit their son who works as an 4: teacher in Hong Kong took eight weeks as they used different types of public transport to help them on their journey. During their 5: trip, the couple used trains, busses, ferries, taxis, cable cars and even horses so they could arrive in the Special Administrative Region in time for their son s 30 th 6:. 3 In total Mr and Mrs Whiting used 16 trains starting with the Eurostar to travel from St Pancras Station in London to Berlin. From there they stopped off in Belarus before travelling across 7: on the Trans-Siberian railway and visiting Moscow, Suzdal, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. Talking of their epic four-day 8: across Russia and to Mongolia, Mr Whiting commented, It seems like you could get bored easily, but you just don t. There were also lots of other travellers on the train doing similar journeys to us, of all different 9:, so after a couple of days you gel as a community. 4 After leaving the Trans-Siberian railway the couple then trekked through the Golden Triangle in south-east Asia, rode horses and slept in yurts along the route before arriving in China. They then got back on the train and 10: 1,968km from Beijing to Hong Kong in time for their son Oliver s birthday in November. When asked which country was the most 11: the couple both agreed that China had really impressed them. Everything is bigger and better there. There s 3,000 to 4,000 years of history and it s mind-blowing said Mr Whiting. 5 However, perhaps the most incredible fact from the Whitings journey across Europe and Asia was that not once in eight weeks of travelling was any tram, ferry, bus, train or even 12: late!
