[3] Part 3 Reading & Listening 1 ENW 359 Location 1 Easter Island Arrival Read the title for the 1st part of this special Easter Island podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: The Easter Island National Park pass costs $80. B: Easter Island is 7,214km from Santiago. C: The flight time between Santiago and Easter Island is about 5hrs. Location 1 GAP FILL Read / Listen to Location 1. What is the correct answer for each space? Write one word in each space. Welcome to Easter Island 3,756km to Santiago. 4,231km to Tahiti. 7,214 km to Honolulu. Welcome to Easter Island, which is almost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! We are very excited to be here, although sadly ENW will only be on the island for a little over 24 hours so we are going to have get a move on to try and see, do and eat as much as we can! ENW landed at Mataveri International Airport, the most remote airport in the world, just after 1pm after a flight time of just over 5 hours. There is only one flight a day from Santiago to Easter Island and ENW somehow ended up in a Business Class seat! As this is an unusual place, ENW is not staying in a hotel - we are booked into a Glamping Site. If you are not sure what glamping is then the best explanation is that it is a very comfortable and big tent. We have an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and even a small private swimming pool! The airpot is fairly small with just one building for both departures and arrivals. The airport was opened for commercial flights in 1967 and the current runway is 3,318m long. Interestingly the airport was once an emergency landing sites for the US space shuttle which resulted in the US government paying to re-tarmac and widening the landing strip. Just before exiting the airport we must find the counter and buy our $80 pass for access to national park. Q & A 1 What is the name of Easter Island Airport? 2 How many kilometres from Easter Island to Tahiti? 3 Who paid for the airport runway to be improved? 4 Where will ENW be staying on Easter Island? 5 When did commercial flights to Easter Island begin?

[4] Location 2 Part 3 Reading & Listening 2 ENW 359 Hanga Roa Read the title for the 2nd part of this special Easter Island podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: Hanga Roa is the name of the only town on Easter Island. B: The town is laid out in a lopsided E pattern. C: Tokorate is the name of a famous Easter Island fish based dish. Location 2 Wrong Word! Read / Listen to Location 2. Circle the six mistakes in the text. Then write the correct words below. A Two Street Town ENW has now been on Easter Island for about 90 minutes and so so far we have no idea what to make of the 1:! Since our arrival we have experienced; blazing sun, strong winds and even heavy 2:! After we arrived at our glamping site and changed clothes, we then walked towards the Island s only town; Hanga Roa, or wide bay in English. In truth it really isn t much of a town, just two streets that form a lopsided T shape. The long street from south to north takes ENW from a small 3:, past a tiny post office and to the ornate Catholic Church on the top of a modest hill. From east to west, is the main shopping street which has a 4: of little supermarkets, a few shops advertising various tours across the island and a two dozen shops selling all kinds of souvenirs. ENW has been given our 5: back in Japan and are on the lookout for small wooden Moai, decorative scarves and jewellery - all must have been crafted on the island! We are also trying to buy Tokorate - chocolate bars made and 6: only on Easter Island! Write the Correct Words! 1: 2: 3: 4: 5: 6: Q & A 1 What does Hanga Roa mean in English? 2 How many different kinds of weather has there been? 3 What is the name of the chocolate? 4 What kind of church is mentioned? 5 How many souvenir shops are there?

[5] Location 3 Part 3 Reading & Listening 3 ENW 359 Moai Read the title for the 3rd part of this special Easter Island podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: There are 887 Moai on Easter Island. B: Approximately 95% of the Moai statues are in the sea. C: Only seven Moai face towards the ocean. Location 3 Jumbled Paragraphs Read / Listen to Location 3. What is the correct order for the sentences in each paragraph. 22km, 887 Statues and No Answers! (A) It is just after lunchtime on day 2 of ENWs trip to Easter Island, this morning we woke up very early and cycled across the island to visit a quarry. (B) But this quarry is rather special and certainly unique, as it is the location where the famous Moai statues the island is famous for were crafted. (C) OK, you might be thinking that a quarry is not exactly an exciting place for a tourist to visit. (A) All of the Moai appear to be sitting in a squat position, but without any legs. (B) Research on the Moai have concluded that there are 887 statues dotted across Easter Island, some standing alone, many more in rows, but crucially all but seven face towards the island and away from the ocean. (C) The statues are believed to have been crafted between 1,250 to 1,500 years ago and depict faces of large, broad noses and strong chins, along with rectangle-shaped ears and deep eye slits. (A) The roads to get here were not the best, as they were dusty with many pot-holes, but luckily we didn t suffer any crashes! (B) The answers to these questions are unknown, though many have speculated, but that doesn t really matter, what is certainly undeniable is they are truly amazing! (C) 95% of the 887 Easter Island Moai can be found in the quarry at Rano Raraku, and this is why ENW has cycled the 22km from our glamping tent this afternoon. (D) Of course there does remain two outstanding questions about the Moai; firstly why were they made and secondly who do they depict? P 1: P 2: P 3: Q & A 1 How many kilometres did ENW cycle? 2 What is the name of the quarry? 3 How many years ago were the Moai crafted? 4 What body part do the Moai not have? 5 Which direction do the Moai usually face?

[6] Part 3 Reading & Listening 4 ENW 359 Location 4 Stargazing Read the title for the 4th part of this special Easter Island podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: The stargazing tour cost US$100. B: The south of the island is the only area with street lights. C: A powerful telescope is needed to see Mars and Saturn. Location 4 Which Word? Read / Listen to Location 4 Read the 7 words in the box and then put them in the correct place. 1 chocolate 2 caressing 3 ghoulish 4 street 5 stargazing 6 clarity 7 undiluted Mars, Saturn & A Night With the Stars! It is 10:30pm on a Sunday night in mid-november, ENW is stranding on a small hill on the south of a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There are no 1: lights, houses and only the odd car in the distance. We are looking up at a clear night sky 2: by man-made light and the stars are mesmerisingly clear. For our final night on Easter Island ENW has signed up for a stargazing tour, and in addition to the stars we hope to be able too see planets, and drink hot 3:! ENW has paid US$90 for a 3.5 hour 4: tour. The evening started with an entertaining lecture about the history of navigation in the Pacific Ocean - given by a man originally from Newcastle - ENWs hometown! It is a small world After that we took a 30 min ride in a mini-bus to a small hill where a powerful telescope was set-up. It was a fantastic as EWN was able to see the Mars red surface in all its glory and best of all the perfect 5: of Saturn s rings! After we finished gazing at the stars blanketed across the night s sky, we then took a 10 minute drive to Anakena Beach where seven Moai statues provide a 6: midnight backdrop. As it is nearly 12am, the only people around are the other six people in our tour group. Looking up at the stars in the sky, with the Moai in the background and the sound of the Pacific Ocean 7: the beach behind us ENW is reminded how lucky we are to have experienced this incredible isolated island. Q & A 1 How much was the tour? 2 What is the name of the beach with the Moai? 3 How long was the tour? 4 Which part of the island is the stargazing tour on? 5 How many people were on the tour?

[7] Part 4 Post Listening / Reading ENW 359 Writing Which One? Writing Which as your favourite Easter Island location? Write as many reasons! Research the city and find TWO more locations you would like to visit. Write about your choices and explain why you chose them! And finally Did you Know..? (T) The big change occurred when NASA extended the runway on Easter Island so it could accommodate an emergency landing by a space shuttle. (U) That before 1987 tourism to Easter Island was relatively minimal as the island s airport could only accommodate small aircraft. (V) From 2018, a visitor can only spend a maximum of 30 days on the island and from 2020 a maximum of 100,000 visitors will be allowed per year. (W) Thankfully it was never needed! (X) However with around 100,000 tourists visiting every year, the island authorities have now taking steps to cap the number of visitors. (Y) As the flying time between South America and the island was more than 4 hours this resulted in only small numbers of tourists being able to fly there. (Z) It also meant that the cost of flying was rather expensive!
