After the reunification of Germany in 1990 it was decided to move the national parliament to a unified Berlin. Norman Foster, a British architect won the competition to paint the Reichstag building. But the German government decided something else was needed to make new building 'stand-out'. So a 360 degree glass house designed by Godfried Bohm was built - and this is where ENW stands now. It is a truly awful site...although ENW hopes this glass floor doesn't break! From classic spy movies to real life espionage - the iconic border crossing of a divided Berlin was a United States 1: post called Checkpoint Charlie. ENW's last stop on our trip to Berlin is to find out what has happened to this symbol of a divided Europe. Well we are standing exactly where the Berlin Wall used to 2: through the city whilst looking at what remains of the checkpoint. Sadly, it's not an enjoyable view - the small 3: remains but it is surrounded by cheap souvenir shops, an overpriced museum and people dressed as US soldiers charging tourists 2 a photograph. The two 4: on both the East & West warning that this is a closed border do remain as a poignant memento to a divided Berlin. Regrettably ENW is nearly finished on our trip in this fantastic city - if you have the chance you must visit...especially 5:! Right where can ENW find a genuine piece of the Berlin Wall...? However the city's most famous X: no longer has any planes landing...as it has been turned into a huge park! Berlin Templehof was opened in 1923 and finally closed in In 1948 the Z: refused any traffic into Berlin from land or water. So to help the isolated West Berliners the US & UK sent planes carry necessary and important supplies.
