4 REALLY BASICS Always look to the direction of banking!

5 MORE BASICS Look out from the cockpit Don t look at the avionics too long time Do the settings only when it is safe Do all the preparations before the flight

6 WHILE THERMALING All Gliders should try to maintain at consistent angle of bank, degrees Avoid flat turning as you make it more difficult for everyone else in the circle Avoid turning inside another glider because you are changing collision avoidance responsibilities

7 WHILE THERMALING If faced with a flat turning glider and it is necessary to turn inside, use the radio! When flying less than 10 km from the home airfield, only left turns! (Räyskälä rules of flying)

8 DURING GLIDE Don t stay in the dead man s angle or fly above/below without being sure others are aware of you. Don t pull up if not sure there is enough room for you.

9 DURING GLIDE If you are following another aircraft or you are below another aircraft you are responsible for safe separation.

11 DON T COUNT ON FLARM! FLARM is designed and built as a nonessential 'situation awareness only' unit to support the pilot, and cannot always provide reliable warnings.

12 IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENT - GENERAL Keep your car keys available in the car When an accident occurs, keep your focus on flying and airspace monitoring to avoid more accidents. Field Marshal/Competition director leads the procedures Keep radio frequencies free

13 IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENT AT THE AIRFIELD Typically tow plane or glider... or both crashed on runway In the case of crash landing Field Master or Competition Director executes the necessary procedures Competition Officials make the call to 112 Everyone joins the first hand rescuing procedures Don t use your phone! Don t rush to the accident place to photograph

14 IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENT IN THE AIR Accidents during task / outside the airfield. Typically a collision or out landing damage / -accident Alarm is started by the person who can see/hear the accident Inform other pilots and the competition director immediately Remember to use frequency MHz

15 IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENT IN THE AIR The Area Control Center (ACC) is informed by the person who first hand sees the accident or by the person who has the best knowledge of the accident Others listen and forward information when asked or e.g. the competition officials can t hear Log your observations and location for possible search and rescue operations. The informant remains on the frequency (ACC/ competition frequency) until the emergency message has been acknowledged and permission to leave the frequency has been granted

16 MEDIA Questions by the media are only answered by the competition director!

17 OUTLANDING Report the outlanding to your crew, who will inform the competition office Keep you radio on MHz, as someone may want to land next to you or ask your status Keep your mobile phone turned on and in your pocket, it can be traced by the SAR Any damage to the glider has to be reported

18 OUTLANDING Always calculate glide ratio to a landable area You need height for planning a good circuit The fields might be short and/or surrounded by trees limiting the effective landing area Always do your own decisions don t fly with If they go, I go mentality

19 LAKE LANDING Is not a normal option and can be dangerous Safer than landing in forest or a clearing Choose a lake Deep enough Land along the shore Land down wind side of the lake

20 LAKE LANDING Before landing Call on the radio, the turn of master switch Prepare mentally Locate the seat belt lock Locate the canopy emergency jettison Open the parachute belt locks Gear down Low speed, but main wheel first Flaps in thermaling position Airbrakes closed (if possible) On touch down, protect your face with your left arm (if possible)

21 LAKE LANDING After landing Dont t hurry, dont panic the glider will not sink Don t start swimming with too much clothes on If your phone is working, let the others know your okay
