1 Weekly Bulletin, 04 Special Note: Upcoming Group Visits: 05 October Richards Bay Day Visit 08 to 13 October Zambia Group Visit 12 to 17 Group Visit Angola US$97.9 million budgeted for Luanda and Benguela railway lines maintenance The Angolan government plans to spend US$97.9 million on maintenance of the Luanda and Benguela railway lines. The US$42.9 million contract for the maintenance of the Luanda railway line was awarded to the China Railway Group (CRIG). CRIG has been contracted to performance the maintenance due to the technical inability of the Caminhode-Ferro de Luanda. The Ministry of Transport has been authorised to contract the China Railway 20 Bureau Group Corporation (CR20) for US$55 million to take charge of maintenance for the line operated by Caminhos-de-Ferro de Benguela (CFB). Although the reconstruction of the Benguela line was completed in 2015, the restoration of railway links between Lobito and the Democratic Republic of Congo border at Luau is required. The 27- year civil war destroyed most of the country s rail network and therefore, the reconstruction (which includes the Moçamedes line) cost nearly US$3.5 billion between 2005 and The project was undertaken by Chinese companies and involved km of railway lines and the construction of 151 new stations. (Source: Macauhub) Ethiopia Ethiopian Airlines in negotiations to take over private n airline National carrier, Ethiopian Airlines is currently negotiating with the n Government to acquire the private n airline, Arik Air. Arik Air was taken over by the government due to failure to service its debts and pay employees' salaries. Ethiopian Airlines currently has a fleet of 92 aircraft, flying to 104 international 19 local destinations and it plans to expand its presence into West. It also manages Asky Airlines in Lomé, in a joint ownership with the Togo government, and Malawian Airlines, also jointly with the government. (Source: All ) Kenya Kenya Power supports buying locally manufactured goods, services and works As part of supporting the Buy Kenyan Build Kenya initiative, Kenya Power aims at increasingly buying locally manufactured or produced goods, services or works. The initiative is aimed at reducing the procurement of imported goods so as to attain, in the medium term, a ratio of 80% locally produced against 20% imported goods. In this regard, Kenya Power will prioritise products that meet international standards and its requirements with the minimum threshold for local production and content shall be prioritised going forward. Kenya Power is currently carrying out connectivity and network expansion programmes. (Source: Energy )

2 Mauritius Mauritius set to sign agreement establishing TFTA The Mauritian government is set to sign an agreement that will establish a Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern (Comesa), the East n Community (EAC), and the Southern n Development Community (SADC). Amongst others, some of the objectives of the TFTA are to create a large single market with free movement of goods and services to promote intra-regional trade. The area represents an integrated market consisting of 26 countries, 57% of the n population and a total GDP of US$1.3 trillion. To date, 16 member countries have signed the TFTA agreement. These are: Angola, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. (Source: FTW Online) Dangote Foundation to establish university of technology in Abuja Aliko Dangote, president and founder of the Dangote Foundation plans to establish a university in Abuja. The cost of the project is N200 billion (US$554 million) and it aims to meet international standards in terms of the necessary infrastructure to attract the best faculty members from around the world. Through the project, the foundation intends to drive technology and research in stimulating economic growth. Although the university will primarily specialise in the area of technology, the foundation has further been advised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to establish a conventional university running all programmes. Land has been purchased and preliminary measures are in place for the headquarters of the university in Abuja. (Source: Vanguard ) Mambilla Hydro Power Plant project receives approval from Federal Government for US$5.8 billion The Federal Government has approved the contract for the Mambilla hydro power plant project. The cost of the project is US$5.8 billion and consists of engineering and electromechanical works. Upon completion the power plant will produce 3050MW of electricity which is nearly half of the current total national output. The project will be carried out by joint ventures of the Chinese Civil and Engineering Company for the engineering and turnkey contract, including civil and electro-mechanical works. The construction is estimated to take approximately 72 months (6 years). The plant will see the construction of four dams, one of them being about 150m in height, the immediate two will be 70m in height and the smallest of them will be 50m in height. It will also include a 700km transmission line. It will be located in the Taraba state in the area called Gembu. 85% of funding will be provided by the China Exim Bank, while 15% will be funded by the Federal Government. The country has been discussing the project since (Source: Daily Trust Newspaper) Rwanda Plans to rehabilitate and develop Rwanda s potato industry The Rwandan Government has signed an agreement with a n investor to rehabilitate and develop the country s potato industry. Through the agreement, Rwanda plans to become a key producer and exporter of potato products. The agreement was signed between Rwanda 2

3 Development Board (RDB), the Ministries of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and Trade, Industry and EAC Affairs and BlackPace Group. According to the National Industrial Research and Development Agency (NIRDA) that will be supporting the project on research and trade issues - the five-year project will cost US$120 million and includes building two potato processing factories. The one factory will be established in the Kigali Special Economic Zone for frozen French fries, while the other factory will be established in the Nyabihu District to produce potato products for the export market. In order to boost production activities, the project is envisioned to be implemented under a public-private partnership agreement. Rwanda is one of the largest potato producers in the region and currently produces 2.3 million tons of potato annually. Irish potato are one of the government s six priority crops falling under the Crop Intensification Programme. (Source: The New Times) Zambia Government invests US$1 billion in aviation infrastructure development In order to increase aviation activities, the Zambian Government is investing US$1 billion for the development of the national aviation infrastructure. Its plans to launch a national airline that will ensure availability of competitive air transportation to and from Zambia. Development of infrastructure in provincial towns includes the expansion, modernisation and improvement of domestic provincial and district airports as well as aerodromes. The Zambian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has pointed out that the enumerated increased aviation activities and infrastructure development will also result in environmental pollution from emissions which will be the responsibility of the Aviation Emissions Group. (Source: Construction Review Online) Zambia US$1.05 million grant for feasibility study of Zambia s first wind power plant The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has approved a US$1.05 million grant to support a feasibility study for Zambia s first wind power plant. The study will be carried out by renewable power project developer Access Power and its strategic partner, EREN Renewable Energy (EREN RE). The cost of the power plant is estimated at US$$275 million and is aimed at generating about 500GWh of clean electricity. The project will be the first independent wind power plant in the country and will help in diversifying Zambia s energy generation mix. It will also be one of the largest renewable energy projects in sub-saharan.
