5 Scope TOURISM 2017 TOURISM nd International Conference on Global Tourism and Sustainability was endorsed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) thus recognising the relevance of the initiative. As in the previous edition, the conference aimed at discussing the role of tourism with reference to the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, namely the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The World Tourism Organization (UNTWO) emphasizes the role of tourism regarding the SDGs related to inclusive and sustainable economic growth (Goal 8), sustainable consumption and production (Goal 12), and the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources (Goal 14) (UNTWO, 2015). However, as stated in the same document, as a global activity, tourism has a broader influence on sustainability goals and may contribute to the implementation of all SDGs by: - Improving human and communities welfare, by reducing poverty and hunger; - Improving countries development as well as citizens equality, health, education and inclusivity; - Promoting the preservation of cultural identities and cultural and natural heritage; - Contributing to gender equality; - Ensuring access to resources (water, energy) and food in an affordable way, as well as sustainable production and consumption; - Promoting partnerships, economic growth and fair work; - Building low impact infrastructures; - Reducing actions and procedures that contribute to climate change; - Protecting terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems. Thus, the commitment of tourism activities with sustainability goals endorses new ways of thinking, planning and managing tourism activities. Awareness on these questions embraces all the actors (politicians, investors, companies and citizens) that may decide, from their different standpoints, on how to take the road of sustainability. In the future, for instance, travelling will be more demanding, regarding sustainability goals, and will certainly change the paradigm of tourism. Tourism sustainability goals will certainly bring many changes, from the way tourists travel, to the way infrastructures are built, the way local people interact with visitors, or the way urban and rural landscapes and natural areas accommodate the flow of tourists. Tourism is not a gold mine, but may be part of the solution for local and regional development, for natural and cultural preservation and for bringing closer different people, thus paving the way for a more equal and conscious global community. 3

This implies cooperation among multiple stakeholders and the sustainable use of resources. The purpose of this study is to establish a conceptual model to measure the quality of destinations, considering the concepts of governance, sustainability, and tourist experience. According to the index, that used data from Algarve region, the performance of a destination depends on these three main dimensions, each one measured by a set of subdimensions that were weighted by an international expert panel. The result provides guidelines for transfer of knowledge to the main destinations stakeholders. 5

They extend intermittently, with at least six bastions, for about 1.5km around the central town. Lagos slave market, built in 1444, was Europe s first slave market. It was here during the 15th century where the first slaves, captured and transported from Africa, were sold. 9
12 TOURISM September - Thursday 14:30 Boat trip On this cruise we will sail from the Bay of Lagos to the most impressive caves and rock formations at Ponta da Piedade. We will visit the famous caves of "Ponta da Piedade", a famous natural attraction from Algarve. The shoreline is formed of heavily weathered cliffs that have been carved into rock pillars, natural tunnels and hidden grottos. The sandstone cliffs of misshaped angles stand at stark contrast to the deep turquoises and greens of the calm seas, and the entire region is simply stunning. 16:00 Technical visit: Ecotourism & Nature Tourism Luís Azevedo Luz Beach - fossils, volcanoes and other geological stories Ponta da Piedade Nuno Pereira Urban Art in Lagos LAC Laboratório de Artes Criativas (Creative Arts Laboratory) 20:00 Social Dinner at Tivoli Duna Beach Club Duna Beach Club is the amazing place chosen for the social dinner of TOURISM 2017! On the long white beach at Meia Praia, this friendly and welcoming beach resort in the Algarve provides an excellent backdrop for beach and meetings. With a very good menu, specially selected for you, you will have the possibility to spread your network and to enjoy this evening with all the participants of the conference. 10
13 Venue TOURISM 2017 The city of Lagos TOURISM 2017will be held at Lagos, an ancient town on the west part of Algarve (called Barlavento). The region of Lagos is sometimes considered as one of the most beautiful landscapes of the southern coast of Portugal mainly because of its small and almost unreachable beaches and imposing cliffs. The climate is mild, the gastronomy is very rich and the people are friendly. Unlike other Algarve regions, Lagos was not invaded by high buildings and its historical city centre is well preserved and deserves a visit. The narrow pedestrian streets, bars and restaurants, as well as monuments and traditional architecture houses welcome the visitors in a friendly manner. Lagos has a resident population of circa inhabitants, which increases considerably during Summer months. Its history is more than years old: it's named after a Celtic settlement and it was then occupied by Carthage and Rome, conquered by the Visigoths and then by the Moors in the 8th century a.c. The Christian conquerors only arrived in the mid 13th century and therefore the Muslim traditions had time to settle and gain its roots in this region. During the discoveries Lagos became a very important centre and its slave marked is one of physicals evidences of that period - a place with some stories to tell... More recently Lagos gained importance due to the tourism and to the beauty of its natural landscape but traditional ways remained and deserves a careful visit. 11
14 TOURISM 2017 The Cultural Centre of Lagos The venue will take place in the Centro Cultural de Lagos, located at "Rua Lançarote de Freitas, n.º 7". The CCL Centro Cultural de Lagos is a multidisciplinary space for the production and presentation of cultural activities, with special emphasis on events in the field of performing arts and visual arts. The CCL have an auditorium with capacity for about 300 spectators with Italian stage and a temporary exhibition area of 500 m2 distributed in 3 rooms. In the exhibition area the CCL has a diversified program that covers various topics related to architecture, archeology, history and a strand majority owned by dissemination activities of the national contemporary art, but with some pivotal events of international character, conducted in collaboration with institutions like the Serralves Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Be welcome to sunny Lagos 12
