4 4 The ecomuseum is a participatory experience of material and nonmaterial cultural heritage enhancement, elaborated and developed by an organised body, as an expression of a local community, in the perspective of a sustainable development. (Catania Chart, 2007)

6 6 Goals of ecomuseums: to build the image and the identity of the territory as long-term competitive factors; to preserve and use in the present and for the future the cultural heritage so as to increase its value, and not waste it; to contribute to the socio-economic development of the local community: tourism and local productions.

7 7 Ecomuseums system of the Piedmont Region is made up of 25 sites that: pursue common goals are a virtuous model in the policies of regional planning 7

8 Contributions to sustainable tourism 8 preserve and enhance specific landscapes and the cultural heritage of the Piedmont Region (landscape).

9 Contributions to sustainable tourism 9 organise: museums, documentation centres, learning and analysis trials and routes. (learning)

10 Contributions to sustainable tourism 10 qualify reception services and products (overnight stays, catering,..), organise events and parties connected to local traditions (leisure)

11 Contributions to sustainable tourism 11 increase the awareness of local actors on the limited amount of local resources and on the importance of their preservation for the future (limit);

12 Contributions to sustainable tourism 12 educate visitors about a conscious and responsible use so as to avoid negative impacts on the environment and local cultures;

13 13 Fundamental elements of an ecomuseum a geographically and socially homogeneous territory, with a significant size: from one or more Municipalities to a Province with a meaningful cultural heritage; an initiative (project) which is the expression of the local community, who identifies the elements of the heritage that must be preserved and enhanced; an internal organisation that encourages the involvement of local actors and inhabitants (work groups and thematic forums);

14 Fundamental elements of an ecomuseum 14 a managing body (province, municipality, union of municipalities, association) whose role is recognised by the community; a coordinator animator with relational skills and agent for local development; adequate human and financial resources for the management;

15 Fundamental elements of an ecomuseum 15 research and learning to encourage knowledge, interpretation and spread of cultural heritage; internal (to the citizens) and external (to the public visitors) communication; promotion of the significant elements of the territory (offer and tourist reception, local products, ).

16 16 The role of local boards municipalities, individually or in association, have been the promoters of their constitution; they work as managers of the ecomuseum and take part in the co-financing; provinces, in some cases, are managers and take part in the co-financing; the Region, with its law, establishes the ecomuseums, controls and evaluates the work of ecomuseums, performs coordination and promotion activities and co-funds the year plans of ecomuseums.

17 17 The most important value brought to the territory the activities performed are: research, analysis, interpretation, experimentation, training and planning; the procedures, concerning the relationships between external experts (professionals in museology and other disciplines) and local knowledge (of the citizens), increase the skills and competences of local stake holders. The only ones who can guarantee a future to the ecomuseum and the territory.
