He ll transfer you to Arusha and the lovely, private cottages at Rivertrees Country Inn. On the way, look up at the beautiful roof of Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro and its sister, Mt. Meru. 5 DAYS 2 & 3 LITTLE OLIVER S CAMP TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK DAYS 2 & 3 Little Oliver s Camp Tarangire National Park Little Oliver s Camp/Asilia Africa After breakfast, head toward Little Oliver s Camp in Tarangire. This intimate camp sits in a secluded wilderness area, far away from other lodges and close to a plethora of wildlife at the stunning Silale Swamps. Tarangire boasts one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa. Many close-knit elephant families matriarchs, babies, teenagers and bulls, come together along the Tarangire River and in the wetlands. Feel their wisdom and deep emotional bonds. Big cats love the rolling savanna here too. Take the opportunity to leave the Land Cruiser and walk with a bush guide. The bush equivalent of a behavioral psychologist for large mammals, your walking guide simultaneously keeps track of numerous factors including the direction of the wind, scents, and exit paths, so you may enjoy your walk in the wilderness. 6 CONSERVATION & CULTURAL INITIATIVES TANZANIA PEOPLE & WILDLIFE Tanzania People & Wildlife Tarangire & Serengeti National Park, Tanzania Eliza Deacon/Asilia Africa $ 10 in proceeds from your safari go to Tanzania People & Wildlife. Tanzania People & Wildlife empowers communities to manage and benefit from their natural resources, to improve the lives of rural Africans and protect wildlife. Tanzania People & Wildlife reduces human/wildlife conflict by working with locals to build Living Walls corrals that protect livestock from wild predators. They also dispatch the rapid-response Warriors for Wildlife team that manages conflict incidents in 20 northern Tanzanian communities. They monitor & track wildlife, collect & analyze data and work with the community. This has lead to substantial decreases in poaching and illegal charcoal production and saves approximately 150 lions each year. Small grants help locals lead their own conservation initiatives. Student programs, such as wildlife clubs and environmental summer camps, educate young people on conservation and community stewardship. The highest-achieving students receive full scholarships to private secondary schools. Tanzanian People & Wildlife s Our Women s Beekeeping Initiative is a microfinance opportunity for women entrepreneurs to run an eco-friendly honey business, and a 100% community-owned campsite provides revenue from sustainable wildlife tourism. 7 DAYS 4 & 5 MYSIGIO CAMP NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA DAYS 4 & 5 Mysigio Camp Robert Wheeler Ngorongoro Conservation Area Dry plains rapidly turn to lush coffee plantations and tropical vegetation on the drive from Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. Ngorongoro is an extinct volcano. Flora thrives on volcanic soil. The top (7,500 ft) boasts a once in a lifetime view into a caldera with some of the best wildlife viewing in East Africa. Hike and visit with the Maasai. Your Maasai guide, Sanguyan Kimani Ole Dorop ( Ole Dorop ), is a regional clan leader who has spent his whole life here on Mount Lemagut. The Maasai share these slopes with wildlife, having learned how to co-exist together. Meet Ole Dorop s family and learn about his village life and his proud and traditional culture. Enjoy a picnic lunch near Oldupai Gorge, site of the Leakey family s excavation of some of the oldest human skeletons ever found. Kiota Camp is in the central Serengeti, near the famous Seronera River. The Seronera is a network of perennial rivers that merge into the valley and there is water here year round. The river marks a boundary between the sweet grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the wooded hills of the north. There are plant, animal and bird species from both habitats in this area. Animals congregate around the permanent water source, living their whole lives in this large valley and never migrating. Big cat viewing is superb in this region. Twelve different lion prides live within driving distance of the river and its generally accepted that this is the best place on earth for viewing cheetah. Bat-eared foxes roam this valley as well. 9 DAYS 6-8 KIOTA CAMP SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Robert Wheeler The word Serengeti means endless plain. It will be clear why. Serengeti s famous annual wildlife migration stretches more than a thousand miles and is most known for vast herds of wildebeests, zebras and Thomson s gazelles. The herds gather on the Tanzanian side of the ecosystem from approximately November/December through early July. In search of greener grasses, they make their perennial pilgrimage from the Maasai Mara into the Serengeti and back. As the migration herds spill across the Serengeti, witness the greatest wildlife show on the planet.

10 DAYS 9-11 KWIHALA CAMP RUAHA NATIONAL PARK DAYS 9-11 Kwihala Camp Ruaha National Park Remote, rugged and wild, Ruaha National Park is built for adventure. Sitting in a transitional zone between the savannas of northern Tanzania and the woodlands common in Zambia, it s uniquely covered with thick vegetation in some areas and open grasslands in others. Sandy intermittent streams flow from the Great Ruaha River. Track wildlife along the river beds. Listen for pangolins in the bush. Lions here are generally much larger than those in northern Tanzania and many Ruaha prides have as many as 20 members. Cheetahs frequent the grasslands while leopards lie in the more wooded areas, as do smaller predators like spotted hyenas and black-backed jackals. It s the only park to see greater and lesser kudu together. 11 CONSERVATION & CULTURAL INITIATIVES RUAHA CARNIVORE PROJECT Carnivore Research project Ruaha National Park, Tanzania Eric Frank/Kwihala Camp/Asilia Africa $ 15 in proceeds from your safari go to the Ruaha Carnivore Project. A predator s Eden, Ruaha is home to large populations of lions, cheetah, spotted hyenas, leopards and African wild dogs that thrive on the abundant wildlife on the plains and the livestock raised outside the protected area by local pastoralists. Predator attacks on livestock result in villagers killing lions and other apex predators to protect their livelihoods and families. As with almost every species, recent lion population declines have been dramatic. It is estimated that only six large lion populations remain in Africa and that Ruaha supports the second largest lion population on the continent. The Ruaha Carnivore Project was developed to address the needs of both the local human and predator populations to reverse these trends. When Ruaha Carnivore Project initially met with community leaders to listen to what they needed, they realized lions could be more valuable to people alive than dead. Ruaha Carnivore Project worked to reduce attacks on villagers livestock by reinforcing bomas (livestock enclosures) and placing guard dogs to alert herders when predators approach. They addressed the villages need for better healthcare, education and veterinary care for livestock. Each night of your stay at Kwihala Camp supports the Ruaha Carnivore Research Project with a per person financial contribution.

12 DAYS 9-11 KWIHALA CAMP RUAHA NATIONAL PARK Ruaha means great in the local HeHe language. Lorenzo Rossi/Kwihala Camp/Asilia Africa Ruaha is Tanzania s largest national park and best kept secret. It has very few visitors. Home to one of Africa s largest elephant populations, zebras, giraffes, large herds of buffalo and antelope, it s baobob-dotted landscapes straddle the Eastern Rift Valley. Rivers and swamps teem with crocodiles and hippos. Roughly ten percent of the world s lions live here, as well as the continent s third largest population of wild dogs.
