One of the world s few inland deltas, the Okavango s calm waters and lush indigenous forests are home to innumerable aquatic-adapted bird and wildlife. Bushman Plains Camp, located in the northwest region where the Okavango River begins to spread out and create the world s largest inland delta, is Botswana s first Bushman-owned camp. Ideal for a canoeing or walking adventure safari, the Selinda Spillway, an ancient waterway, flows in two directions and connects the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti wetlands. The Reserve, whose wildlife was almost hunted out of existence until 2006, is now thriving. Home to some of southern Africa s largest remaining elephant and buffalo herds, it s a base for conservation researchers. The Selinda Adventure Trail is a four-day helicopter, canoeing and walking safari led by excellent safari guides and occasionally Kane Motswana, a River Bushmen from the Gudikwa village in Botswana s Okavango Panhandle. Begin downstream from the Selinda airstrip in the northeast area of the Delta and head along the Selinda Spillway through the Reserve, exploring side channels along the way. Home to an abundance of animal and birdlife, it is surrounded by ebony and mangosteen trees and offers both land and water activities year round. In addition to wildlife viewing, explore the incredible variety of birds, plants and reptiles in the aquatic habitat of the Okavango Delta by motorboat or mokoro. 7 COMMUNITY & CONSERVATION INITIATIVES RHINOS WITHOUT BORDERS Great Plains Conservation and &Beyond, two leading conservation and tourism companies teamed up to relocate 100 rhinos: Rhinos David Murray/Rhinos Without Borders without Borders A rhino is killed every 8 hours 6,102 rhinos poached in South Africa since 2008 At an all-time high in Africa and increasing at an alarming rate, the illegal rhino horn trade has seen the number of these magnificent African icons poached rise significantly in recent years. After airlifting them away from populated areas in South Africa, RWB releases the rhinos to the wild in Botswana, where poaching is virtually non-existent. The goal is to develop a safe breeding area away from danger zones in South Africa and grow the rhino population. More rhinos are poached each year than born.
