Search for wildlife, have a picnic lunch and head toward Little Oliver s Camp in the unspoiled southern wilderness far from other lodges or camps. Tarangire boasts one of the largest and most conspicuous elephant populations in East Africa. Observe their unique behavior along the Tarangire River where many close-knit elephant families come together. The big cats, particularly lions and leopards love the rolling savanna here as well. At the end of the day, enjoy a wonderful safari tradition: sundowners (drinks at sundown). Being so close to the equator, sunsets are quick and brilliant. Head into the Crater early as dawn brings a wave of activity in the natural world. Welcome to an astonishing microcosm of East African wildlife environments: grasslands, wetlands, acacia forest and a soda lake. At the right time of day, flocks of flamingoes wade into the soda lake to feed. Zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and gazelle mingle on the savanna and buffaloes graze in the long grass. It s not uncommon to see lions and possibly a first cheetah sighting in the Crater, on this mini savanna. Enjoy a picnic lunch near Oldupai Gorge, site of the Leakey Digs excavation of some of the oldest human skeletons ever found. Visit the museum and learn about the gorge from the resident anthropologist. The migration covers territory in both Tanzania and Kenya. The vast herds of wildebeest, zebras and Thomson s gazelle gather on the Tanzanian side of the ecosystem from approximately November/December through July for their epic march stretching more than a thousand miles. Wildebeest harvest the highly nutritious, short grasses covering the semi-arid plains. As the migration herds spill across the southern Serengeti, they move out into the Conservation Area. 8 CONSERVATION & CULTURAL INITIATIVES LEMALA Lemala Lemala Ndutu Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania $ 40 in proceeds from your safari go to Lemala s community fiund. Lemala feels extremely fortunate day in and day out to live and work in Tanzania and believes in paying it forward in exchange for this gift. They help support local northern Tanzanian villages with employment and cultural tourism opportunities. They have hired a staff of 9 from the nearby village and donate educational items to the school. Funds earned from walks in the area help improve education and classroom facilities. Lemala also provides many villages with access to clean drinking water by means of ceramic clay pots that offer a natural filtration system. In addition, they contribute to an orphanage and a school for the disabled. The Ngare Nanyukie underground river creates pockets of permanent water that support year round concentrations of wildlife. That means easy prey available throughout the year. Frankfurt has built on that permanent water source and their efforts have not only significantly increased habitat for cheetah, but for all predators. This is big cat country with the highest density of cheetah in East Africa, who fly across the plains in pursuit of prey. Leopards hunt beyond the sight of human eyes and lions rule the grasslands. Tanzania People & Wildlife empowers communities to manage and benefit from their natural resources, to improve the lives of rural Africans and protect wildlife. Tanzania People & Wildlife reduces human/wildlife conflict by working with locals to build Living Walls corrals that protect livestock from wild predators. They also dispatch the rapid-response Warriors for Wildlife team that manages conflict incidents in 20 northern Tanzanian communities. They monitor & track wildlife, collect & analyze data and work with the community. This has lead to substantial decreases in poaching and illegal charcoal production and saves approximately 150 lions each year. Small grants help locals lead their own conservation initiatives. Student programs, such as wildlife clubs and environmental summer camps, educate young people on conservation and community stewardship. The highest-achieving students receive full scholarships to private secondary schools. Tanzanian People & Wildlife s Our Women s Beekeeping Initiative is a microfinance opportunity for women entrepreneurs to run an eco-friendly honey business and a 100% community-owned campsite provides revenue from sustainable wildlife tourism.
