This is the quintessential African safari experience! Day 1 Arrive in Arusha (Kilimanjaro Airport) You are met upon arrival and transferred to our hotel near the airport. On a clear day, enjoy views of Africa s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Overnight in Arusha. Day 2 To Tarangire National Park This morning we make our way to the town of Arusha in time to visit a local market before lunch. In the afternoon, we drive to the Tarangire National Park enjoying game viewing opportunities enroute to our camp. The Tarangire National Park is idolized in Hollywood movies, romanticized by early settlers and sought after ever since by the modern traveler. Open savannah, looming primeval baobab trees and stretched groves of acacia compete with roaming herds of elephants and an impressive array of predators to provide the very definition of the African bush. Overnight in Tarangire National Park. Day 3 Tarangire National Park Leaving our lodge early in the morning, we make the most of prime game viewing opportunities and enjoy a picnic lunch in the park. We continue our game drive in the afternoon, which 2

4 Maasai warriors. is an excellent time for spotting wildlife as they venture to the rivers edge to drink the cool water. Overnight in Tarangire National Park. Day 4 Maasai and Mto Wa Mbu Villages, to Lake Eyasi We leave the park early, enjoying game viewing along the way. We then make our way to a traditional Maasai Boma village. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history and lifestyle of the Maasai people. We will also visit the Mto Wa Mbu village which is is among the most active villages in Northern Tanzania. We will discover what the people do for a living, learn different modes of production and what exists in their culture. From here we enjoy a local primary school visit where we have an opportunity to meet the principal and students in the community. After lunch at a local hotel, we make our way to Lake Eyasi where we will enjoy our stay for the next two days. Overnight near Lake Eyasi. Day 5 Lake Eyasi, Bushmen Experience After an early breakfast, we drive to meet the Hadzabe Bushman, related to the San and Kung Bushmen of Kalahari fame. The Hadzabe are a fascinating, traditional people. Experiencing life through the eyes of such ancient peoples will give you a privileged view of the lives of one of the last groups of authentic hunter-gatherer groups left in Africa. We return to our lodge in time for a late lunch. Dinner and overnight near Lake Eyasi. Days 6-7 To Central Serengeti National Park - Safari After breakfast we depart for Tanzania s most famous game park. For the next three days, watch for big game as we travel through the Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti could easily be the most famous national park in the world. The primeval paradise, roughly the size of Northern Ireland or Connecticut, has been the subject of countless wildlife films, each seeking to capture the 4

6 unique spirit of these exhilarating eco-systems that was, until recently, the domain of the favored few. The unfurling plains provide the stage for the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on the planet when the massive herds of millions of wildebeest congregate on the short grass plains for the great migration north to the Maasai Mara. The gently undulating hills of Lobo stretch up to the Kenyan border, an idyllic landscape, dotted with kopjes and shady arbors, in which we track the resident wildlife. Overnight in the Serengeti National Park. *Optional Balloon flight on the morning of Day 7* Day 8 Serengeti Region Safari After an early breakfast, we spend the day on safari as we follow the wildebeest migration to our camp located in the South (March season) and Northern (July - October season) part of the Serengeti. Overnight in the Serengeti National Park. Day 9 Serengeti Region Safari We continue our exploration of the Serengeti region and tracking the wildebeest as they make their migration. Each day in the Serengeti brings unexpected and incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Overnight in the Serengeti National Park. Day 10 Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge After breakfast, we continue our game drive out of the Serengeti National Park heading towards Ngorongoro Crater. Enroute, we stop at the viewpoint overlooking the Olduvai Gorge. A river canyon cuts 300 feet into the volcanic Serengeti Plains which was once the home of our earliest ancestors. The Gorge was made famous by the discoveries of fossil fragments of Homo sapiens by the Leakey family in 1959 and we will visit the small, but excellent museum. While we have our picnic lunch, we can enjoy a talk from museum staff about the discoveries made in the valley below us. Not everyone can visit the valley below but we can experience this as we have special permission as one of the only groups allowed to visit the actual site of discovery. We continue driving to Ngorongoro with the road offering spectacular views - sometimes over the Serengeti Plains and other times into the crater itself. Overnight on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Serengeti Balloon Safari (optional) View the Serengeti from the dream-like perspective of a hot-air balloon. Sail through the warm air on our sunrise balloon ride and celebrate with a Champagne breakfast. Price: from $550 USD Price subject to change. 6

7 Day 11 Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha This morning we wake up to breathtaking views, followed by a crater tour before making our way back to Arusha. After lunch we enjoy a visit to the Cultural Heritage Center followed by free time before our farewell dinner. Day 12 Depart Arusha (Kilimanjaro Airport) After breakfast you will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International airport in time to connect to your flight home or onwards to the 4 day Rwanda gorilla tracking extension. Overnight in Arusha *It is possible to fly home from the Kilimanjaro airport in the late evening depending on flight schedules* 7

11 Questions & Answers 1. How big are the groups? Each group is limited to 16 participants. Small groups are an important ingredient in adventure travel. They allow for more interaction and more personalized service throughout the itinerary. 2. What is included in the tour price? All accommodations throughout; all meals, starting with dinner on day 1 and finishing with breakfast on departure day (i.e. the last day of the ElderTreks tour); bottled drinking water throughout the trip; all internal transportation; airport transfers on day 1 and departure day (i.e. the last day of the ElderTreks tour); all day trips and entrance fees as outlined in the itinerary; tips for hotels (porterage), driver/guide, restaurants and spot guides; services of a trip leader. 3. What is not included in the tour price? International flights, tips to ElderTreks tour leader, alcoholic drinks, visas and travel insurance. 4. Are these educational tours? Yes, in the broadest sense of the word, educational. We visit national parks, local villages and reserves and have talks and discussions on many aspects of history, culture and nature. But this is only a portion of the educational experience. We believe that it is equally educational to meet local people on a non-commercial basis, visit their homes and even try to learn a few words in the native language. 5. How do we travel during the tour? All local transportation is included in the land price of the trip. We travel by 4x4 safari vehicles, and by foot. Please note: some roads are in poor condition they can be rough and bumpy. 6. What are our accommodations like? We always stay in good accommodations hotels, lodges and luxury tented camps, where rooms have a private bath or shower. Single supplement not guaranteed for all nights. 7. What about the weather? Temperatures in Tanzania vary from the low 60 s F (16 C) at night to the high 80 s F (26 C) during the day. Humidity is average 50%, and rainfall is moderate during the times that we travel. The sun can be strong so a good sun hat and sunscreen is recommended. 8. When is payment due? A non-refundable deposit of $500 (plus insurance if you require it) is due at time of booking and will reserve your place on the tour. Payment of the full land cost is due 100 days before departure. Cancellation charges are applicable and are outlined in the Terms and Conditions section of our brochure. 9. Is medical insurance required? Insurance coverage is not included in the cost of your trip. Please note that medical insurance is not required for this adventure but is recommended. ElderTreks offers comprehensive travel insurance and we are happy to provide you with a quote if you call our office. If you are purchasing insurance elsewhere, please ensure you provide the details to ElderTreks as soon as possible. *Please note those travelers with pre-existing medical conditions must take out travel insurance at the time of deposit 10. All meals during the itinerary are included, starting with dinner on day 1 and finishing with breakfast on departure day. We eat a variety of local foods prepared in a wide range of settings. 12.
