Getting to grips with this exciting continent could be a daunting task but book yourself on an epic overland journey and you will be sure to capture all the sights, sounds and smells of this intrepid traveller s dream destination. Overlanding through Africa can involve allpurpose overland trucks (see page 18), 4x4 safari vehicles, ferries, minibuses or even a hot-air balloon! Most trips will involve some camping which gets you close to nature (which let s face it, is one of the main draws of Africa!) and many trips involve simple hotels and guesthouses. Wherever you sleep, you can rest assured it ll be comfortable and part of the adventure. You will travel with between 16 and 22 likeminded explorers on average and will make some life long friends. Nairobi / Arusha Arrive into Nairobi at any time and meet your guide and group. Depart Nairobi in the early morning of Day 02, heading south across semi-arid lands into Tanzania to the safari capital of Arusha. (B, L, D) Serengeti National Park Cruise through the acacia-spotted savannah of the Serengeti in a 4WD vehicle. Massive herds of wildebeest and zebra migrate annually on the plains and the Big 5 animals roam this vast expanse of grassland. Look out for the Masai people - often seen herding their cattle. (B, L, D) Ngorongoro Crater / Marangu Enjoy a morning game drive in the Serengeti National Park before continuing to the Ngorongoro Crater with its stunning views and amazing wildlife. The rich pasture and permanent water of the crater floor supports a resident population of more than 25,000 large mammals. Take in a classic safari experience, spotting the likes of zebra, gazelle, impala and cheetah. (2B, 2L, 2D) Dar Es Salaam Head through varied landscapes today towards Tanzania s largest city and port, Dar Es Salaam, and explore its colourful streets. (B, L, D) Zanzibar Head over to the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar which has a rich history and culture. Embark on a guided tour of a spice plantation, enjoy a spot of scuba diving or snorkelling, relax on the beautiful beaches and explore the fascinating streets and museums of Stone Town. (3B) Ruaha River / Iringa Catch the ferry back to Dar Es Salaam and travel to your campsite on the banks of the Ruaha River, before continuing south to Iringa where you ll see artists at work at a local craft centre. (2B, 2L, 2D) Lake Malawi Spend three days staying in lakeside camps along the shores of enormous Lake Malawi, taking long beach walks, swimming and enjoying optional village visits and fishing trips. (3B, 3L, 3D) Senga Bay / Chipata / Lusaka Experience the colourful chaos of another border crossing and get a sense of the vastness of Africa on these driving days. Cross into Zambia and head to Chipata, where you can visit some of the local Down Shops, traditional stores owned by the small Indian population who call Chipata home. Next, journey across Zambia to a private game farm just outside the capital, Lusaka. (3B, 3L, 3D) Livingstone Based in the buzzing town of Livingstone, spend the next few days exploring the breathtaking Victoria Falls, a natural wonder of the world. The Zambezi is 1,688m wide here and up to 550 million litres of water per minute plunges across its five main cataracts. Go white water rafting, canoeing on the Zambezi or try a bungee jump. Arusha Depart Nairobi in the morning heading south through the semi-arid lands of the Masai people into Tanzania. Arrive into Tanzania s safari capital, Arusha. (B, L, D) Serengeti National Park Jump into a smaller 4x4 vehicle, great for game viewing. Enjoy the multitude of animal and birdlife while cruising through this acacia-spotted savannah. The Big 5 roam this vast expanse of grassland and the Masai people can often be seen herding their cattle. (B, L, D) Ngorongoro Crater / Marangu Enjoy a final game drive in the Serengeti National Park before continuing to the Ngorongoro conservation area. The views from your campsite right at the crater s rim are stunning. The crater floor supports a resident population of more than 25,000 large mammals! Continue on to Marangu, one of the popular starting points for those departing to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. (2B, 2L, 2D) Dar Es Salaam Travel past iconic Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa s highest mountain and head towards Tanzania s largest city and the departure point to Zanzibar s beaches, Dar Es Salaam. (B, L, D) Zanzibar Zanzibar, the spice island, has a rich history and exotic culture. Relax on the island s many beautiful beaches, explore the fascinating streets of Stone Town and soak up the island spirit. Embark on a guided tour of a spice plantation or sign up for optional visits to palaces, museums and traditional Arab residences. Snorkelling and diving are also available if the Indian Ocean proves irresistible. (3B) Ruaha River / Iringa Catch the ferry back to Dar Es Salaam and continue travelling west to the Ruaha River. Continue the journey southward to Iringa and spend the night just outside the town. (2B, 2L, 2D) Lake Malawi Cross into Malawi - known as the warm heart of Africa. Spend three days relaxing on the shores of the enormous Lake Malawi taking long walks on the beaches and swimming in the crystal clear water. Choose to snorkel or scuba dive among the colourful tropical fish. As you snake down the shores of the lake you ll stay the night at various lakeside camps. (3B, 3L, 3D) Senga Bay / Chipata / Lusaka Experience the vastness of Africa on these driving days. Head to Chipata in the eastern part of Zambia, before arriving into the Zambian capital, Lusaka on Day 17, to camp on a private game farm outside the city. Spot zebra and giraffe while camping and visit craft stalls and markets to pick up textiles and baskets. (3B, 3L, 3D) Livingstone Based in the buzzing town of Livingstone, spend the next few days exploring the breathtaking Victoria Falls. 4 FR $4, S Chobe National Park / Gweta / Makgadikgadi Pans Journey to the Chobe River, home to one of the largest elephant populations in southern Africa. The best way to appreciate Botswana s largest national park is on an afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe River. You may also choose to embark on an afternoon game drive in the park. Venture south to the village of Gweta near the shimmering salt pans of Makgadikgadi. (2B, 2L, 2D) Maun / Okavango Delta Proceed to Maun to pick up supplies for your unforgettable journey into the Okavango Delta. Based at a bush camp, you ll enjoy a full day of game walks, birdwatching and traditional mokoro (dug-out canoe) excursions in the pristine wilderness area of the Okavango Delta. Marvel at the wide variety of wildlife that calls the world s largest inland delta their home and learn the ways of the bush from your local polers. (2B, 2L, 2D) Kalahari (Ghanzi) / Windhoek / Waterberg Plateau Game Park Continue through the western part of Botswana, the heart of the Kalahari, to Ghanzi. Take the opportunity to walk with a local San Bushman and learn fascinating bush skills. Continue on for a welcome hotel stay in Windhoek, the German-influenced colonial capital of Namibia, before heading north to Waterberg Plateau Game Park where you can take a scenic forest walk and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. (3B, 3L, 2D) Etosha National Park One of Africa s highlights, Etosha National Park offers a great variety of wildlife and phenomenal natural beauty. Explore the pans and the park on game drives where you ll spot lions, giraffes, elephants, hippos, rhinos and herds of antelope and wildebeest. (2B, 2L, 2D) Damaraland Enjoy one last game drive before heading to the stony desert landscape of Damaraland. (B, L, D) Swakopmund Heading south through Damaraland, if time allows you ll have a chance to visit some of the local attractions such as historic rock engravings and a petrified fossil forest. You will then spend two nights in lovely coastal Swakopmund - try some of the numerous activities available such as a Living Desert tour, dune boarding, quad biking, dolphin cruise or even skydiving. There s also the chance to meet the locals whilst exploring the backstreets on a guided interpretive township walk. (B, L) Namib Desert / Fish River Canyon / Gariep (Orange) River Head to the emptiness of the Namib Desert. You ll spend the first night in the mystical village of Solitaire. The next day you ll visit Sossusvlei - a clay pan enclosed by the world s largest sand dunes. You ll also stop at Sesriem Canyon, a small canyon that s invisible from even a short distance away. Spend your second night on the edge of the Namib Desert. Journey to Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. Take in the beauty as a spectacular sunset slips beneath the canyon rim. Travel through the more arid regions of Namibia camping on the Gariep (Orange) River. Take a walk in the nearby village, have a swim, relax or ride down the river in a canoe. (4B, 4L, 4D) Cederberg / Cape Town Journey via the Cederberg Wilderness Area to the famous, beautiful and cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. Explore vibrant Cape Town by night, perhaps trying out one of the many restaurants on the rejuvenated V&A Waterfront? Transit through Tanzania s Mikumi National Park and cross into Malawi, known as the warm heart of Africa. Drive along the lush shores of Lake Malawi and experience the warmth of the local people. Spend your time relaxing on the beach or, if you re feeling active, opt to try scuba diving or horse riding in this beautiful location. Leaving the lake you ll cross the border into Zambia and on to Lusaka, for a stay near the country s capital. (8B, 8L, 8D) Livingstone Arrive in Africa s adrenalin capital Livingstone where you ll get up close and personal with the spectacular Victoria Falls. Thrill seekers have the option to bungee jump off Victoria Falls Bridge or go whitewater rafting on the mighty Zambezi River. For something a little less hair-raising try out horse riding or an elephant-back safari. After a wild day, wind down with an optional Sunset Cruise. (4B, L) Kasane / Chobe National Park / Nata / Francistown Travel from Livingstone and cross into Botswana near the Chobe National Park. (3B, 3L, 3D) Livingstone / Victoria Falls Based in the town of Livingstone, spend the next few days exploring the thundering Victoria Falls, one of nature s most amazing spectacles. Go whitewater rafting, canoe on the Zambezi or - if you re feeling brave - take a bungee jump. (3B, L) Bulawayo / Matobo National Park Cross into Zimbabwe and head to your base, the Big Cave campsite, a few kilometres from the Matobo National Park boundary. Day 22, you will explore the park on foot and in open safari vehicles. Dotted around the park are around 3,000 rock art sites, including one of the best collections of ancient San paintings anywhere in the world - some are believed to be over 20,000 years old. (2B, 2L, 2D) Musina / Greater Kruger Area / Kruger National Park Journey onwards to one of the world s most famous national parks. Search for the Big 5 on game drives and stay at an authentic community-run lodge. You ll also have the opportunity to visit a local community project, the Shalati village pre-school where children are prepared for their transition into primary school. (3B, 3L, 3D) Johannesburg Travel to the largest city and economic heart of South Africa. Optional excursions include a visit to the Apartheid Museum and a guided tour of the poignant landmarks of the South-Western Township, or Soweto as it is better known.
