Mt Baw Baw Sticky Note Text Sheets Economic values Value Effort Sticky Note Text Business Jobs Minor Business Visitation Minor Government Economic contribution I value jobs that businesses create and I think we'll need to work reasonably hard to maintain those. Accept that BB is different and can't compete. Aim for boutique market not mass market. Realistically we may agree be made to afford niche investment Government needs to look at overall value to the community - not just $ Environment Retreat from the heat Alpine 'Wilson's Prom' Visitation -what do they do well -what could we do to become a viable alternative Business Business Government White season Economic contribution Economic contribution Major Major Environment Major Business Governance Major Local community reliance on snow. E.g. - hire - Restaurant - Accommodation etc No snow - No jobs Chance to create supplementary service industries if resort has a secure future don't just look at what we have currently. Consider what could be. Government to acknowledge financial contribution and resorts be provided continued support - break-even. Fire Risk -Evacuation alternative needs to be developed I deplore the huge wastage of resources over the years with no clear plans for future 1
Green season Major Summer activities with a unique alpine theme Business Infrastructure Major Visitation Major Capture existing market before we stand big bucks on new markets Visitation Major Get the base product right first Visitation Major Alternate experience if no snow then -walks -IMAX -TUBES - 2
Social values Value Effort Sticky Note Text Resort Minor Environment Environment Environment Activity Major Tendency to feel disconnected to management through inadequate communications Embrace climate change and make be a beacon of resilience to diversify and talk about the unique environment. The environmental value of Baw Baw is a real value for everything else. Climate Change will hurt that? Providing opportunities for exercise increasingly important for todays tech connected youth Diversity Major Environment Environment Major Environment Environment Major Environment Environment Major Wellbeing Major Encourage cultural diversity and acceptance A place for future generations to enjoy Future Victorians can enjoy what my family do in the Environmental values require more attention in these 'reviews' - how do these interact with social and cultural values Health and wellbeing "asset" (not just a cost) 3
Cultural values Value Effort Sticky Note Text Activitybased culture winter to encourage visits Expand activities both summer and Families Family oriented mountain Lodge culture Lodge culture -'Host' - Resort champions -Help and encourage - Enhance visitor exper. Nature-based culture Fairly pristine wilderness area which provides opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching etc Snow culture Off mountain communities thrive in winter - business often reliant on the white season to sustain the year Resort culture Major Diversity Major Mgt - board - to ensure appropriate, motivated, qualified staff - esp. Green season Opportunity to develop emerging markets and social groups. E.g. Mountain boarders, bikers, skiers etc. 4
Opportunities Opp Timeframe Sticky Note Text Governance Short Look for reasons to do things - not not to do Governance Short Green season Short Government Infrastructure Short Develop a unified stakeholder collective to provide a strong voice to bring concerns to management/govt. support for green season activities. Invest in infrastructure -lifts -road access -snow making Resort Infrastructure Short Seal Rawson Rd Investment Short Sponsorship Government Investment Short Respond to current economic downturn in LaTrobe Valley -regional economic input. Outdoor activities Short "Camping" -festival -key periods -snow camping et.etc. Green season Short Events driven green. Government Tourism Short Visitation Short Visitation Short React to current doom gloom scenario in the valley by investing in BB and creating certainty to create jobs, investment etc. New Products -luge -water park -'sega' -MTB -health retreats -ice skating Improve x-country product to enable increase fees. 5
Environment Visitation Short Business Education market Medium Business Green season Medium Celebrate BBs unique environment. Eg. The Baw Baw frog -pristine wilderness -camping -walking Educational opportunity? -school groups -environmental education Retreats for: -health, meditation, fitness, singles. Not based on white season. Business Outdoor activities Medium Erect basketball court and skateboard park (summer) Business Tourism Medium Tourism Medium Resort Governance Long Visitation Long Adventure Tourism -ropes courses -hiking -camping -climbing wall Aboriginal cultural perspective. -opportunity to commercialise the cultural value of BB Get some permanency into the management structure Cash in on climate change escape the heat scenario. 6
Strengths Strength Significance Sticky Note Text Business Commercial Governance Current mgt Diversity of current market. Overseas to local market. Different wants/needs. Strong history of community involvement through lodges and clubs with an excellent understanding of BB history and challenges which could be used. White season Easy terrain appeals to beginners Major Family friendly and safe Major Commitment of Baw Baw stakeholders to Mt Baw Baw Environment Major Gumtree Environment Location Major Closest 'real alpine' environment to Melb and Gippsland Government Location Major Location - with respect to Melbourne and Latrobe Valley and current economic downturn 7
Weaknesses Weakness Significance Sticky Note Text Resort Infrastructure Minor Costs Need multi language signs esp in danger areas Electricity Cost and capacity Governance Stable mgt structure C inc board and government Investment Funding for snow making. Business Commercial Major Business Costs Major Government Costs Major Alternative resort uses have huge competition from between resorts and established markets Prohibitive power and admin costs Financial viability and stakeholders esp. Re service provision Environment Major Utilise existing resources Environment Environment Major Lack of attention in the current 'review' processes Resort Governance Major Infrastructure Major Government Infrastructure Major Resort Infrastructure Major Government Investment Major Some bad experience with previous management Solution with infrastructure in power, gas, water Funding for resource infrastructure -roads, water etc Resource infrastructure -esp. For snow making Weakness of ski clubs Age of members 8
Seasonality Major Don't offer alternate experiences if no snow Resort Staff Major Lack of staff continuity Visitation Major "Need for extreme "Develop some challenging products. Eg. Ski the lift lines- tree runs 9
