Namaste Nangi Hills Trek R P C V Rhododendron Forests Dhaulagiri & Annapurna Spring time in the Himalaya of Nepal has many diverse landscapes -- including ten of the highest mountains. Dhaulagiri at 26,795 ft. (above) is 7th highest after Mt. Everest. As its name implies Dhaulagiri is a dazzling white mountain, prominently viewed here from the Nangi Hills Trek. Nepal also has high forests and alpine yak and sheep pastures, elaborately terraced fields cascading thousands of feet down the mid-himalayan hillsides and, at lower elevations, lush green jungles with tigers, rhinoceros, wild elephant and exotic birds. Of course, there are culturally rustic villages along with old world markets, palaces, and ancient temples to tantalize the traveler. The Nangi hills trek is unlike any of the standard, run-of-the-mill mountain treks elsewhere in Nepal. Rather, this trek provides travelers with a unique opportunity. It takes you into the midhills of Nepal, to the villages, hamlets, and farms of the Magar ethnic group. We're not just going to look at the Himalayan peaks, but we're also learning about its people, and their place on the magnificent landscape. The backdrop will be the near vertical south facing wall of Dhaulagiri off to the north complemented by peaks of the Annapurna range at the east. The Himalayas are the Abode of Snow", home to both Hindu and Buddhist gods, and many lesser deities and spirits. We have deliberately timed this trek for the rhododendron blossoming season and spring bird migration. We'll also enjoy the awesome terracing that will surround our small group as we walk the quiet trails among villagers who call this incredible place home. After a short visit to Kathmandu, we will take a private van west to Pokhara for the start of this mid-hills trek. Pokhara is a popular central Nepal lakeside stopover for trekkers, with Himalayan peaks just north of town.
Volunteering is an added feature of this trek. Interested travelers will have the opportunity to volunteer their special skills and talents for one or two days in local village activities (described below). And for non-volunteers there are other interesting trek options. Leadership. This Himalayan trek is also unique in that it was suggested and has been designed by American returned Peace Corps Volunteer's (RPCV's) to Nepal. Your RPCV guide is Don Messerschmidt, who was stationed very near this trek destination. After Peace Corps, Don stayed on for many years as an anthropologist, writer, and development specialist. Don speaks Nepali, and has spent most of his life specializing in Himalayan ethnic groups. See his Facebook pages Don Messerschmidt Himalayan Snows at dmesserschmidt.blogspot.com, for more about his unique background and life in the Himalayas. We encourage RPCVs who want a truly unique Nepal hills experience to join us. And we equally encourage non-rpcv's to join us for a great trekking experience. Together, this trip becomes something quite special in the annals of Himalayan trekking. There will also be an opportunity for those who wish to volunteer your skills or services in the Magar villages during the course of our trek. The brief volunteering options and opportunities are described in more detail below. Let's Go! ~~ Important Detail for Travelers ~~ Arriving into Kathmandu Nepal on Day 1 (March 23) may require flying from your home two or more days earlier depending on your choice of flights. You may arrive at any time on March 23 at the Kathmandu airport (KTM). Travel ends back in Kathmandu on April 05, and you may schedule a departure from Kathmandu on any date thereafter. Contact Rusty at Ri Adventure Travel to confirm your dates of travel prior to purchasing your international flights. March Arrive in Nepal and the city of Kathmandu (4460') The sights and sounds of the Kathmandu Valley will fill your mind and your camera with images to last a lifetime. A saying among those who visit Nepal: "If you drop your camera and the shutter goes off, don't worry, you'll still have a great photo." Pass through immigrations and customs, and you will be met outside the airport building entrance by one of our Sherpa's who will bring you to our hotel in the heart of the city. Jetlag and travel-excitement mean that we will take it easy today and tomorrow to let our bodyclocks and our minds adjust to the new surroundings. We'll have an informal walk this afternoon for those who wish, down through the winding and frequently chaotic streets and alleys to the main market and temple area, or "durbar". Photos, sights, and sounds will be bountiful in this old-world city of Hindu's, Buddhists, traders, and hagglers. There is a bead market, a pots market, and a trekkers market. There is a textile street, a gold street, a pottery and brass street, a spice market, and even a 'dentists' street. Hustle-bustle is going on around you, in the voices of a dozen
languages and the expressions of many hill and mountain cultures. Kathmandu streets are a whirl of chaos that has an ebb and flow we can enjoy... for a time. We have chosen a famous restaurant tonight for dinner with a storied history. At dinner time we'll have an orientation about tomorrow and the coming days. ~ airport transfer included for arriving members flights, meals are on your own today March 24 Kathmandu and Choices A "Free Day" that is quite busy, with some choices to make. A half-day of sightseeing is included: you may choose either a morning bicycle ride (or van) to Swayambunath (the Monkey Temple ) or an afternoon visit to the temples and palaces of the carved city of Bhaktapur (a World Heritage Site). Choose either of these options. If you wish to do both, there is an additional cost. You also have an option to go on a Mt. Everest and Himalaya sightseeing flight departing in the early morning, at an additional cost. The flight is spectacular, stunning, amazing, exciting. Let us know when you signup if this is an option you wish to reserve. ~ half day sightseeing, entrance fees, B, D are included March 25 Kathmandu to Pokhara (2998') After early breakfast, we board a private bus for the drive to Pokhara. The road is windy, has great scenery, and will take about 6 to 7 hours. The group leader will explain and interpret some of the cultural and natural landscape that we pass through. We'll stop near the Trishuli Bridge in the village of Mugling for an excellent Nepali lunch. While there, we'll also buy some tiny sugar bananas and oranges, then continue on to Pokhara and our night stop at a hotel on Phewa Lake. Pokhara is a very casual place; life is taken slowly here, and many world travelers come here to rest. Artisans and visitors also try to catch the Himalayan giants reflecting in the calm morning waters of the lake in their art and photographs. ~ transfer, lakeside hotel, B,L,D are included March 26 Trekking Pokhara to Banskharka Village (5003') After an early breakfast we'll depart by vehicle to the trailhead near Beni, in Myagdi District -- in the heart of Magar ethnic culture. The drive will take us through the terraces and villages leading into the middle hills. In good conditions, the drive will take 3 hours, but sometimes it's more "entertaining" and may take up to 5 hours. The afternoon will include a 4 hour hike after a light lunch at Galeshwar village (a sacred site for Hindu pilgrims to the Himalayas). After ascending to Banskharka village we'll be treated to either a simple lodge or a homestay. Each day we'll have porters to carry our duffels; for trekking we'll each carry only a light day-pack. ~ transfer, lodging, B,L,D are included (All meals are provided March 26 - April 03)
The middle hills scenery The villages we visit (called gaun in Nepali) are located in the Myagdi Hills, on high green slopes above the mighty Kali Gandaki River. There we ll meet the Magar people, an ethnic group with ancient roots in the mid-himalayas. To the north of the Myagdi Hills, the permanently snowy peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri rise up into the blue Himalayan sky. Annapurna-I is the world s 10th highest peak at 26,545 feet and Dhaulagiri is the 7th highest at 26,795 feet. Flowing off their flanks are many, many lesser known summits in the 20,000 to 24,000 foot arrange. Suffice it to say that the scenery is breathtaking. All around the villages and farms are beautiful forests primarily of rhododendron, oak, and various bamboos. The trek is timed during the flowering rhododendron season whole forests of beautiful scarlet blossoms. The local forests are also noted for spectacular bird-watching, and our trek occurs during the northern migration of many species. The Magars picturesque settlements are clusters of small, slate-roofed stone houses surrounded by flower and vegetable gardens. Elaborately and painstakingly terraced fields cascade thousands of feet down the mountainsides. Millet, corn, rice, and wheat are grown on them in season. The terraces are many hundreds of years old and are well maintained annually. March 27 Banskharka Village to Nangi Village (8717') A hearty breakfast and the sounds of the village waking up, with children in uniforms heading to school. (Remember those stories your grandfather used to tell about walking to school: hours, miles, snow, etc.? Well, here those stories are true.) Most visitors stay on the crowded main trekking routes, so on this less trekked route you may find that for the next week you will attract special attention or a small crowd of young on-lookers. This morning you'll toss your duffel outside for a porter to carry on to the next night's stop. Portering in these hills is an age-old tradition and an important economic mainstay for many men (and sometimes a few hardy women). It's time to walk the trails with your daypack, sun screen, camera, and water (and at each evening s orientation we ll provide suggestions for the next day s adventure). Lunch is about 3 1/2 hours away. The trail descends briefly to a river crossing and then gradually ascends to Nangi village. Brief, late afternoon volunteer activities are possible today for those who are interested (with more time for more extensive volunteering available in the days to come, as described below). ~ tonight's lodging will be in the community lodge March 28 Nangi Village Among the features of Nangi is a handmade paper making project. The paper is made from lokta, the bark of the flowering and aromatic Daphne shrub. There is also a forestry nursery for replanting of hill slopes both to stabilize slopes as well as for fuel and fodder. There s a women's health clinic, a library, and a village wireless project bringing Internet to the local school. This is also the home village of the world renowned Nepalese social development hero, Mahabir Pun, whose rural Nepal Wireless Project has won him many accolades
Volunteering can take many forms, and a short list of suggestions is provided below on page 08. Let us know your skills and interests, and we ll ask our hosts to fit you in (here, and/or in other villages we ll visit) ~ tonight's lodging will be in the community lodge The Legacy of Mahabir Pun Mahabir Pun is an ethnic Magar of the Pun clan. The Magars have a long tradition of Gorkha soldiery as well as great skill in taming the Myagdi District hills for mountain agriculture. We will meet Mahabir Pun here or in Kathmandu (he's a busy man and his agenda is yet to be decided). As a young man he set out to get the best education he could find and eventually enrolled (with a scholarship) at the University of Nebraska in the USA. There he studied education (so he could return to teach school in the villages) and, later, computer science (in support of a village wireless project). See "Legacy" below for more information about Mahabir Pun, and local village projects. March 29 Nangi Village to Mohare Danda Village (10,817') Today's hike will take us most of the day, through beautiful forests. Everywhere the photography is superb of the forests themselves or the "peek-a-boo" views of the snow peaks above us. Both sunset and sunrise here at Mohare Danda provide stunning views of the mountains. ( Danda in Nepali means hill-top.) For the next couple of days you may wish to rise early, around 5:30 a.m., to take advantage of the pre-dawn light that blends into early warm colors of sunrise. Then we ll have breakfast and continue our journey. Walk slowly, drink plenty of fluids, enjoy the forests/blossoms/birds, the truly stunning mountain scenery, and quiet trails as you ascend to Mohare Danda. The views here are FANTASTIC. ~ tonight's lodging will be in the community lodge March 30 Mohare Danda to Shikha/Swanta Villages (7408') Early hot tea followed by jaw-dropping sunrise photos, then breakfast, and it's time to return to the trail again. This day is a great acclimatization day as the trail will take us briefly to higher altitude, but then descends a bit to enjoy the "thicker air" of Shikha before going higher again. When higher elevations are expected, it's prudent to consciously be drinking more fluids. Your trip leader and guides will be talking to everyone about altitude, fluids, and related topics during the trek. You might note that for the next several days, while traversing forested slopes and ridgelines, there is a greater chance of encountering wildlife. ~ tonight's lodging will be in the community lodge Two Great Options are now Open to You: 1) Lower Elevation and Volunteer Time Or 2) Hike High to Yaks and Summits A split in the itinerary is possible beginning here at Shikha/Swanta. 1: STAYING LOW IN THE VILLAGES, FOR VOLUNTEERING For the next three and a half days trip members who would like to stay lower (more air, warmer) may do so to volunteer their time and skills and/or to explore village life. (A number of volunteer activities are suggested below.) Or, continue on hiking to higher elevations to enjoy different views of the Himalaya. 1) March 31 Lower Elevation : Shikha/Swanta to Paudwar Village (4261') The lower elevation option allows for more quality time volunteering and interaction with local villagers who will appreciate your talents. Volunteering is optional, you may wish
to just explore. The experience of working with the local villagers is rich and rewarding, both to them and to yourself. Shikha is where the Friends of Nepal (FoN) RPCV Legacy Project has sponsored a Health Post wireless system for the surrounding villages. We'll spend time here learning what has been accomplished and see the results. We'll depart after lunch for the warmer climes of Paudwar Village. The trail will take us through forests, and terraces as we descend the Ghar Khola river valley. We'll be staying two nights in Paudwar Village. ~ lodging will be in the community lodge and/or optional homestay April 01 Lower Elevation : Paudwar (4261') Paudwar is a picturesque village where volunteering skills and your time are very welcome. The villagers are actively working at several projects a cheese factory, honey production, school, animal husbandry, and other educational projects. ~ lodging will be in the community lodge and/or optional homestay April 02 Lower Elevation : Paudwar to Tatopani Village (3888') Today is a really exciting day; we'll enjoy the villagers until late afternoon, and then saying 'bye' to our new friends we'll hit the trail for Tato-pani. The walk down will only take a couple of hours to reach the valley floor. After crossing the mighty Kali Gandaki River we'll reach Tato-pani. This evenings lodging will "Wel-come" you and include private rooms. Tato-pani means "hot water" and due to the geothermal springs located nearby there are also soaking pools your muscles will very likely enjoy. Today is also special as this evening the full team comes back together to share stories, experiences and adventures. ~ lodging will be at a comfortable Tato-pani lodge 2: GOING HIGHER INTO THE MOUNTAINS, TO SEE THE MAGAR YAK FARM: 2) March 31 Hike High : Shikha/Swanta to Dhankharka Village (9834') Trekkers who would like to go higher to see yaks will hike trails today that for the most part gain elevation. In recent years, the innovative Magars have established a yak farm under Annapurna, the first of its kind on the south slopes of the Himalayas in many generations. ~ tonight's lodging will be in the community lodge April 01 Hike High : Dhankharka to Khopra Danda Village (11,997') The deepest gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki, appears far below you and to the north at your day's end. The Kali Gandaki river begins near the Tibetan border. Many river gorges may lay claim to the title of "deepest," but with just 22 air miles separating Dhaulagiri on the left and the Annapurna massif on the right and with the valley floor over 20,000 feet below, surely this is the combined deepest/steepest gorge in the world.
Khopra Danda is a steep and slow walk up through birch and rhododendron forests. Trekking up to this remote area will bring us to the Magar Yak Farm Project where we'll learn firsthand about how this successful new enterprise is providing resources and employment for the Magar, and support to local schools. This day provides one of the most impressive views in all of the Himalaya; these are the incredible views you expect to see in the Himalaya. ~ tonight's lodging will be in the community lodge April 02 Hike High : Khopra Danda to Tato-pani Village (3888') It's tough to get out of a warm-toasty sleeping bag, but this is a chance for another unique sunrise. Pre-dawn light slowly breaks into gold and then bright sunrise on the mighty Himalaya, it's a "once in a life-time" moment not to be missed. Early morning tea, then breakfast and begin the descent you've been waiting for, down to thicker, warmer air. With trekking poles in hand, head down,... and down some more. (Trekking poles are highly recommended for the steep downhill slopes.) Enjoy the scenery, take photos, and end the day with a well deserved hot water soak at Tato-pani. This evening the full team will be back together to share stories, experiences and adventures. ~ tonight's lodging will be at a comfortable Tato-pani lodge April 03 Tato-pani to Pokhara (2998') It s time to head back to Pokhara. Our return to Pokhara lakeside from the Himalaya will take 5 or more hours by vehicle. You ll be ready for a hot shower and a good relaxing evening meal by the lake. ~ hotel and B,L,D are included April 04 Pokhara to Kathmandu A morning flight will return us to Kathmandu. Transfer to our hotel; the afternoon is open, free, no special plans. This may be a good time to shop for small gifts to take to friends and family back home. A group dinner celebration will conclude our trip together. If Mahabir Pun is in Kathmandu at this time, we'll invite him to join us. He s an inspiring fellow described a people s man with imagination and drive to see village-based development projects work. ~ flight, airport transfer, Kathmandu hotel, B,D are included. April 05 Homeward bound or continue your travels You may choose to begin your journey home, or stay in Asia. You may continue to visit Kathmandu as there is much yet see, or perhaps visit Chitwan National Park (a famous game preserve), or go on a trek into the Mt. Everest or other region. Optional Fun ideas are provided below. ~ airport transfer for your flight today only, breakfast is included You have completed an incredible journey among the high foothills of the Himalaya.
THE LEGACY OF MAHABIR PUN Mahabir Pun of Nangi village is a Magar of the Pun clan, and a true social development hero. As a young man he set out to get the best education he could find and eventually enrolled (with a scholarship) at the University of Nebraska in the USA. There he studied education (so he could return to teach school in the villages) and, later, computer science (in support of the village wireless project). Mahabir is an unassuming man, but one with huge ambitions for his people. In the midst of the 10-year Nepal insurgency ( ), for example, he set about constructing primitive computers and installing the first wireless Internet connections in Nangi and neighboring villages (these were villages without electricity at that time; all the more challenging). He began with simple jury-rigged equipment made from parts scrounged from friends and acquaintances around the world. He s been running the Nepal Wireless Networking Project ever since, and the number of villages involved now number well over a hundred. You can read about it online at and at ecs.com.np/feature_detail.php?f_id=85. Friends of Nepal (FoN), an association of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) has helped his sponsor wireless projects in several Himalayan villages, including Shikha near Nangi. You can read about it online at ecs.com.np/feature_detail.php?f_id=507 (scroll down to The Friends of the Nepal Wireless Project story). Mahabir s Wireless Project has attracted worldwide acclaim, and has earned him high praise, several international accolades and many honors. The most prestigious is the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, sometimes called the Nobel Prize of Asia ( He also holds the distinction of being an Ashoka Fellow ( Besides high-tech developments in the villages, Mahabir Pun, his friends, and colleagues actively encourage and support local development and entrepreneurship, including comfortable trekker facilities in the villages where we ll stay. During our trip we will meet Mahabir Pun and hear more of his remarkable story. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ON TREK Volunteering a day or two in a village during this tour is a special, optional opportunity. Some of us will do it; others may prefer to enjoy more trekking or to spend relaxing time simply visiting the Magars in their homeland. Those who opt to do some volunteer work have many options. Here are a few ideas: Teach in a school class (a day of English, or some special learning skill including computer training, QuickBooks, or similar) Coach a sport or youth group activity Help out in a community forest nursery or on some other environmental conservation initiative Assist in a local health post or in a school library
Provide skilled labor in local construction Advise on local eco-tourism programs Teach a handicraft skill Advise on product marketing There are numerous possibilities. The locals will learn something and will appreciate your involvement; and you ll come away with a great experience to tell others. (More creative volunteer options are described at Mahabir Pun s Himanchal Education Foundation website, online at If you will be volunteering, let us know your skills and interests, we'll work with our hosts to accommodate your interests if possible.
