1 The Langtang Valley sits within the first national park designated in Nepal the Langtang National Park. The valley offers some of the most spectacular mountain trekking and scenery near to Kathmandu. Just a half-day drive north from Kathmandu brings you to the trekking village of Shabrubeshi and the entrance to the valley and National Park. While trekking locations such as Mount Everest and Annapurna tend to capture the attention of international visitors, and certainly the bulk of trekker numbers, districts such as Langtang offer a fantastic Himalayan trekking and mountain scenery experience without the impact of high volume trekking groups. This makes the Langtang Valley one of those best kept secret locations that only some get to experience. The Langtang Valley is just a short drive north of Kathmandu and so provides an opportunity for very short duration treks to still reach high into the heart of the Himalaya Mountain peaks that run along the border between Nepal and Tibet. The valley itself is a classic glaciated valley from the era of the last ice-age. This makes trekking along the valley floor very easy. The north eastern, or upper end, of the main valley tapers to small active glaciers grinding their way down the high mountain slopes and tributary valleys. This makes the Langtang Valley such a compact, diverse and interesting place to trek. In just a few days traverse the lower Himalayan foothills and reach active glaciers in the high Himalaya. There are so many opportunities for side treks, circuit treks, high mountain pass traverses and peak climbing all within the beautiful Langtang Valley. This trek pursues one of these opportunities and reaches the spectacular high point of Tsergo Ri (5,150m). This region was affected by the April 2015 earthquake and parts of the original trekking trail still remain blocked by landslide material. However rebuilding and trail clearing by the local people has been rapid and extensive and the valley is now open once again for trekking. The first day of trekking now takes a modified route along the northern valley wall well above the landslide affected areas. This actually provides an opportunity for fantastic views along the valley and across the magnificent Himalaya peaks of the southern Langtang National Park, particularly the many 5,700m+ peaks near Naya Kanga (5,844m) and Pangen Dopku (5,930m). The trek then continues up the Langtang Valley to the monastery of Kyanjin Gompa. From here it is possible to climb even higher on a day excursion to vantage points such as Tsergo Ri (5,150m) that offer stunning Himalaya Mountain and valley scenery. This is one of the most scenically rewarding treks in Nepal. You have the opportunity to marvel at countless snow-capped Himalayan

2 summits close at hand and also challenge yourself to reach the heart-pounding altitude of 5,150m or 16,900 feet. Other items: Insect repellent, toilet articles, diary, toilet roll, laundry soap, wet ones, pocket knife, towel, sewing kit, plasters, binoculars, camera, memory cards, chargers and personal medical kit Itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu Overnight in hotel A Lantang Ri Trekking & Expedition representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. When you are ready you will be collected from your hotel lobby and driven to our Thamel office where you will be formally introduced to your trekking guide. We will go through all your trek itinerary and arrangements with you to ensure every detail is in place. We will also ask for your passport, extra passport photographs, travel insurance and any other details so that we can organize any permits required for your trek in the Langtang National Park. Day 2: Drive to Syabrubesi Overnight in trekking lodge The drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi will take about eight hours. You head out of Kathmandu on the highway to Pokhara however you will soon exit the highway through a place called Galchhi and head north along the banks of Trishuli River. The road then heads up into the Himalayan foothills and winds its way through many valleys to reach the busy little town of Dhunche. Here your guide will go to the National Park entrance checkpoint and have your permits checked and stamped to proceed further north into the Langtang National Park. As you head further north some of the high ridges you cross will provide your first glimpses of snow-clad Himalayan peaks (Ganesh Himal and the Langtang Range). After another descend down the valley side you will arrive at Syabrubesi a busy trading and trekking town. There are many trekking lodges here serving trekkers heading towards many parts of the Langtang region. There are also a range of small shops where you may purchase some last-minute items for your trek. But make sure you get to bed early and get plenty of restful sleep tomorrow will be a big day. Day 3: Syabrubeshi to Lama Hotel Overnight in trekking lodge The first part of today s rather long walk is the hardest so take your time on the climb and the day will get easier. You start by crossing the small bridge above Langtang khola just north of Shabrubeshi and the trail immediately starts ascending. As we walk uphill the beautiful dense forest will accompany you on the way followed by the Langtang River, which we will be crossing several times. After walking 4-5 hours we will stop for lunch in a place called Bamboo. After lunch we start the trek again ascending to Rimche, further continuing towards the Lama Hotel. Day 4: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village. Overnight in trekking lodge From Rimche you will follow the original valley-floor trekking trail up the Langtang Valley. Damage to bridges and the trekking trail have all been pretty much repaired and so the walking on this and subsequent days will be much easier than yesterday. The trail takes you through rhododendron and pine forest for around three hours to reach Ghoda Tabela where you will stop for lunch. The trail then continues on and reaches the site of Langtang Village, which was destroyed in the Earthquake of 2015, but the village has been rebuilt again just by the side of previous langtang village. Your guide will say a prayer for all those that perished and you may 3

4 also wish to add your prayers and thoughts. You are now in the middle of the glorious Langtang Valley and likely feel humbled by the size and power of the mountains towering above you on both sides of the valley. This is a spectacular location. Day 5: Mundu to Kyanjin Gompa Overnight in trekking lodge Today is easy walking again as you head towards the top of the valley. There is plenty of time to take it easy and a slow pace will also help you acclimatize and reduce the risk of altitude sickness symptoms. Take some time to enjoy views of Mount Ganchempo and Mount Langtang Lirung high above you. By early afternoon you will reach the extensive complex of the Kyanjin Gompa Monastery. Find a place to sit outside in the sun and just soak up the stunning scenery. Day 6: Explore around Kyanjin Gompa and climb to Tsergo Ri Overnight in trekking lodge Today you may rest or explore the valley and riverbeds around Kyanjin Gompa. If you feel strong and have no symptoms of altitude sickness you might like to take a trek to climb to the top of Tsergo Ri at 5,150m or 19,600 feet altitude. You should take this ascent very slowly as the air is thin and the gradient gets steep. The gentler you are on your legs, lungs and heart the better. You will return back to Kyanjin Gompa with some of the most stunning Himalaya Mountain photos. The view from Tsergo Ri will just capture you and you will not want to leave. Such is the captivating power of the Himalaya Mountains all along the Langtang Valley. Day 7: Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel Overnight in trekking lodge Today requires another long walk as we head all the way back to Rimche in just one day but be assured it is all downhill so you will be fine. You may find yourself getting faster as you go due to the extra oxygen in each lower-altitude breath. Day 8: Lama Hotel to Syabrubeshi via Sherapagaon and Khangjim Overnight in trekking lodge Today you retrace the path along the high valley wall trail to Khangjim and then rapidly down to Shabrubeshi. Time to kick the trekking boots off and relax after a good shower. Day 9: Drive back to Kathmandu Overnight in Hotel After breakfast we drive back to Kathmandu. Day 10: Final Day - Flight Home We will collect you from your hotel lobby in plenty of time to take you to the airport to check-in for your flight.
