First of December to the end of March None Joao Lima CU3AA (cu3aa.azores@gmail.com) 1.1 Program derivation Azorean SOTA is an extension of similar programs already active in other countries, particularly the Portuguese program. The initial list of summits was based on the work of CU3EJ Leonel Avila. From the hundreds of summits existing in the Azores, only those with 150m prominence were accepted which decreased that number to only 29. 6 The summit database is supposedly complete. However, if you find a summit which is not presented or if you find a mistake in this ARM, please contact the Manager. Summits cannot be counted for points until a reference number has been allocated by the Manager. 1.2 General information s are based on each of the nine islands of the archipelago. All regions have the same points rationing scheme. To qualify for a summit it has to meet the following requirements: The summit must be listed in Map 1:25000 with a corresponding name The summit must be elevated at least 150m from it s surroundings (150m prominence) In the case of doubt the Management Team will decide whether the Summit will be added to the list The summit database does not claim to be completed and can only be changed by the acceptance of the management team. Summits cannot be counted for points until a launch date and reference number has been allocated by the Manager and approved by the SOTA Management Team. 1.3 Rights of way and access issues Footpaths in CU land are usually well marked. Anyhow you should take a good map of the region where you want to hike plus GPS and/or compass if you have one. Never hike without a map, always follow the footpath or any other roads. If a summit is in private property or you need to cross private property to access it, we suggest you get the owner's permission before attempting activation. In certain islands (Terceira and São Jorge) be aware of the existence of wild cattle (bulls). An animal alone can be dangerous. 1.4 Maps and navigation The easiest way to obtain a map is to buy one in the city or village which is closest to the summit. We are sure that you will be able to obtain one in almost every shop or kiosk. Best maps are printed by but not exclusively. In every table of summits there is a column Mountain Range (keyword), which will help you to find most accurate map for summit's surroundings. You can also use webmap by IGEO-E,SIG Instituto Geográfico do Exército, available in different languages. 1.5 Safety considerations S111.1 ~ 6 ~

7 Before hiking always consult a weather forecast or check it on Please remember that weather in the mountains can change rapidly and you should be always prepared for snow, rain, strong wind or intensive sun, especially over 750 metres a.s.l. In case of emergency you should call 112, the universal emergency number for all EU member states. 1.6 Foreign HAMs in CU Land Holders of CEPT Licenses are authorized to transmit according to their licenses and IARU I bandplan. You should have a copy of your license with you. You should prefix your callsign with CU and the number of the island you are in. However, you may also use CT8/ Category 1 CEPT, CS8/ Category Novice and CR8/ Category 3, mostly for beginners VHF/UHF. Then you should add, /P, after your callsign (i.e. CU3/QQ0QQQ/P). If you'd like to transmit from Azores for longer than 3 months you should contact ANACOM - Açores (Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações Delegação dos Açores) in order to obtain a license. The SOTA Management Team and their associates assume no responsibility for accidents. Participants must be competent to undertake their proposed expedition and must carry suitable equipment, taking account of the terrain, weather conditions, etc. Activators take part in the Program entirely at their own risk and the Program in its entirety shall accept no responsibility for injury, loss of life or any other loss. Activators are reminded that hill climbing is an inherently hazardous activity. Accidents can and do happen in the mountains and the risk is neither increased nor mitigated by the SOTA program. Each participant does so at his or her own risk, and must decide, on the basis of their own ability, whether an objective is achievable. The listing of a summit in the reference does not mean that it is easy to reach, and it is always worth seeking local advice for all but the simplest of the expeditions. S111.1 ~ 7 ~

8 2 Summit Reference Data 2.1 Reference Corvo Island CU9 Corvo Island CU9 (CU/CV-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes The island of Corvo (Island of the Crow) is one of the nine islands of the Azores archipelago. 9 2.2 Reference Flores Island CU8 Flores Island CU8 (CU/FL-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes Flores (Flowers Island) is an island of the western group of the Azores. It has an area of 143Km 2 and a population of approximately 3900 inhabitants. It is best recognized for its abundance of flowers. 10 2.3 Reference Faial Island CU7 Faial Island CU7 (CU/FA-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes Faial Island (Fayal Island) is located in central group of the Azores. The island is referred as Blue Island due to the large quantity of hydrangeas that bloom during the summer months. Pico and São Jorge Islands are its neighbors. The island is about 173 Km 2 and inhabitants. Faial is also known for its sheltered harbor for sailboats and the volcano Capelinhos. 11 2.4 Reference Pico Island CU6 Pico Island CU6 (CU/PC-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes Pico is an island in the central group of the Azores. Mount of Pico is the highest place in Portugal with more than 2300m. Pico is also known as black island for its black volcanic earth. 12 2.5 Reference São Jorge Island CU5 São Jorge Island CU5 (CU/SJ-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes São Jorge is in the central group of the Azores. Is separated from Pico Island by a 15km strait. São Jorge is a relatively long thin island with tall cliffs. Its area is 237,6Km 2 with approximately 9500 inhabitants. The São Jorge Deltas are along the south and north coasts. 13 2.6 Reference Graciosa Island CU4 Graciosa Island CU4 (CU/GR-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes Graciosa Island is the most northern island of the central group. With a surface of 61Km 2 is the second smallest island of the archipelago. It is also the flattest and driest island. 14 2.7 Reference Terceira Island CU3 Terceira Island CU3 (CU/TE-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes Terceira Island is the third biggest island and was the third to be discovered. Is situated in the central group of the archipelago. It covers an area of 385Km2 with a population of inhabitants. The island s capital is Angra do Heroismo, which center town is a World Heritage Site. 15 2.8 Reference São Miguel Island CU2 São Miguel Island CU2 (CU/SM-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes São Miguel is the biggest island and the principal one of the Azores. It covers an area of approximately 747Km 2 and inhabitants. Very mountainous island, is characterized by two volcanic massifs. Its impressive craters have turned to mysterious mountain lakes. 16 2.9 Reference Santa Maria Island CU1 Santa Maria Island CU1 (CU/ST-xxx) Refer to Manager al notes Santa Maria is the southernmost and third smallest island of the Azores archipelago, located in the eastern group. Is about 97Km 2 and around 5500 inhabitants. It is primarily known for its white sand beaches, distinct chimneys and dry warm weather.
