During the 16th and 17th centuries, the islands geographical position was pivotal for Atlantic navigation between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. During that period, the sea around the Azores was the scene of important sea battles. In fact, pirates often attacked the islands themselves. Over the following centuries, the archipelago developed with the introduction of new crops, the addition of milking cows and larger fisheries. The Azores has always been part of Portugal and today has Autonomous Region status, with its own assembly and government. 3

3 São Miguel São Miguel is considered the capital of the Azores and is the biggest, most diverse, and most populated island among the nine. It s known for its volcano-created lakes, sulphur springs spa, historic towns, and beautiful beaches and mountains. It s also called the Green Island because of its interior, where rich soil makes for productive agriculture. All São Miguel s roads lead to views of the rolling hills, the ocean, and the occasional cattle wandering on the road. In the mountains on the eastern side lies Lagoa do Fogo, Lake of Fire, a deep caldera with a lake at the bottom. Nearby are two tea plantations the only tea plantations in Europe. Visitors can walk the fields, tour the tea factories and then have a cup of tea in a stone-walled café. Along Furnas cobblestone streets, some 23 types of mineral water flow and geysers bubble. Furnas is also famous for its natural spas, where for decades travelers have flocked from all over the world to soak away their cares. Ponta Delgada is the largest city in São Miguel. The city offers plenty of places to dine. Prices are reasonable and the meals tend to be large, with generous portions of grass-fed beef and fresh seafood. 5 Tours on São Miguel Island Tours on São Miguel Island Half Day Lagoa do Fogo Depart from Ponta Delgada and head towards the north coast of the island, to visit Ribeira Grande and its outskirts. There is a short stop at Ribeira Seca to visit the ruins of a renaissance fountain, which was destroyed together with the settlement in 1563 by a volcanic eruption. The tour continues to Ribeira Grande for the characteristic 17th and 18th century architecture of its buildings. Then guests will visit the most significant monuments of the city. Next, drive on the mountain road to Lagoa do Fogo. Stop at the belvedere to admire the magnificent Lagoa do Fogo and its banks. From here both north and south of the island can be seen at the same time. Then, drive down the mountain towards the waterfront to the village of Lagoa. On the way down, enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the central part of the island, showing the ocean and the coastline along with the mountains of the Lagoa das Sete Cidades on the horizon. Once down, visit a ceramic factory to see how the local pottery is made by hand. Then return to Ponta Delgada. Half Day Vista do Rei Depart from Ponta Delgada and head towards the most western part of the island, where the mountains and lakes of Sete Cidades are situated. Stop at the belvedere of Vista do Rei, one of the most important panoramic stops of the island, where the blue and green lakes can be observed in an enormous volcanic crater. Return to Ponta Delgada through a mountain road with beautiful sights over the central part of the island. In the outskirts of Ponta Delgada a stop will be made at the pineapple plantations to witness how this tropical fruit grows here. Clients will also have the chance to taste the pineapple liqueur. Full Day Nordeste with Lunch Depart from Ponta Delgada and head to Povoação, driving on the south road of the island. Povoação is situated in the most southeastern part of the island and is where Portuguese navigators first came ashore and settled. Enjoy a walk on the waterfront. Drive to Ponta da Madrugada, one of the most pleasant spots of the island, overlooking the ocean. Drive to the small town of Nordeste, where lunch will be served. After lunch, enjoy a walk around in the center. Continue driving through several villages in a different landscape, on the foot of Pico da Vara, the highest mountain of the island. Drive up to Salto do Cavalo, where one has a wide panorama of nearly the entire island. The highlights of the island are the magnificent belvederes, and the most luxurious ones are in Nordeste. The return to Ponta Delgada is along the north side. Full Day Furnas & Lagoa do Fogo with Lunch Depart to Lagoa do Fogo driving by the south side of the island towards Barrosa Mountain. Stop at the belvederes to admire not only the beautiful quiet lake, but also the landscape of the surroundings. The descent will be by the north side to reach the city of Ribeira Grande, where the clients will have the opportunity to observe the Barroc Architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. The drive goes on by the north coast, making stops at belvedere of Sta Iria, tea plantations at Gorreana and belvedere of Pico de Ferro. The biggest and oldest volcanic crater is visible from this last belvedere. At the bottom the crater lies Furnas lake and the spas of Furnas valley. Once in Furnas, the famous Cozido nas caldeiras will be served at lunch. After lunch, a visit to the park Terra Nostra may take place (optional). While still in Furnas valley, a visit to the hot springs will take place. Return to Ponta Delgada driving along Furnas lake, Vila Franca do Campo, the former capital of the island and the home of the artesanal potteries. Also along the south coast, guests will make a stop at belvedere of Caloura and will pass by the town of Lagoa. Full Day Sete Cidades with lunch Depart from the hotel at 9:30 a.m., through the southeast road, go towards Varzea. Guests will arrive at Caldeira das Sete Cidades, to see its Blue and Green Lagoons, situated on the occidental part of the Island and considered protected landscape. Guests will also stop for coffee and return to Varzea through the same road. Then stop at Escalvado and continue the tour through the northeast road. From here, guests can watch the mountain in the middle of the Island, all the way to Bretanha; a village that, in the past, was inhabited by French-origin fishermen. Lunch break will follow. Typical dishes like Cavalo Branco will be on the menu. After lunch, guests will visit the Pineapple plantations, where they can observe the several growing stages of that fruit and try its delicious liqueur. Return to the hotel around 5:30 p.m. 8 9

8 Tours on Terceira Island City Tour: ANGRA DO HEROISMO This is a walking tour to downtown Angra do Heroísmo. UNESCO considered this city world patrimony in Main points of interest for this tour are: Jardim Duque da Terceira, Praça Velha, Paços do Concelho, Palácio dos Capitães Generais, Igreja da Sé, and others. During the tour, there is the possibility of stopping in one of the many city coffee shops for an espresso and some typical island pastry. This is also a good opportunity to buy some Azorean arts and crafts, mainly from Terceira Island. Full day - Terceira with lunch Depart from the hotel in Angra do Heroísmo at 9:30 a.m. The tour starts with a visit to Monte Brasil, situated on the extreme point of the city. Going towards the East side of the Island, guests can visit Castelo S. João Baptista and then drive through the following villages: Ribeirinha, Serretinha, Porto Judeu (where guests will see Salga Bay), São Sebastião, Porto Martins, with a visit to the swimming area, Cabo da Praia and finally the city of Praia, where guests will have lunch. After lunch, walk through town, and up Facho, where there is a better view. The tour continues, this time through the middle of the Island. It will start with the top of Serra do Cume, where guests can see the typical Island view of fields that look like a hand made quilt, following Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre (considered the heart of the Island) and also the Tentaderos (can be watched including bulls from the typical bullfights). During summer there is a possibility of watching a Tenta (small and fun bullfight in the mountain area). The tour will continue going to Biscoitos, with a visit to the Wine Museum and the swimming area. Continuing through the North of the Island, and on the way back to Angra do Heroísmo, guests will travel by the villages of Altares, Raminho, Serreta (will see a beautiful park), Doze Ribeiras, Santa Barbara, and Cinco Ribeiras. Whenever it is possible, we visit the cheese factory and the swimming area. Then head towards Angra going through São Mateus. Half day East Depart from the hotel in Angra do Heroísmo at 9:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. The tour starts towards the East side of the Island through the following villages: Ribeirinha, Serretinha, Porto Judeu, São Sebastião, Porto Martins, Cabo da Praia and finally the city of Praia. Here guests may walk through town, and up Facho, where there is a better view. The tour will continue going to Biscoitos, through very typical villages of Lajes Vila Nova and Quatro Ribeiras. In Biscoitos, guests will be able to visit the Wine Museum and the swimming area. The tour continues, this time through the Serra do Cume, where guests will be pleased by the amazing green landscape, known as Manta de Retalhos. Return to Angra. Half day West Depart from the hotel in Angra do Heroísmo at 9:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m., going on an interior road through the Azorean Lerírias, where visitors can watch cattle herds, including bulls from typical bullfights. In the town of Biscoitos there is a stop to visit a wine cellar and taste the local wine. Continuing the journey through Serreta, arrive in a belvedere to appreciate the island and catch sight of S. 10 Pico Pico, which means peak in Portuguese, is aptly named, as its giant peak often rises above the cloud cover. Visitors can climb to the peak, which is the highest point in all of Portugal.
