3 1 ABOUT MILL VALLEY Mill Valley Guidebook 3 Nestled at the foot of Mount Tamalpais and extending to the marshland surrounding Richardson Bay, Mill Valley is located in the beautiful Marin County, just to the north of San Francisco, across the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge. It takes only about 15 minutes to go from San Francisco to Mill Valley but when you walk down the streets of this lovely town, it feels like you are far away from the city. Mill Valley has the charm of a small European village made better by the facilities of a sophisticated urban area. Many people come to Mill Valley for its rich variety of cultural events, to dine at the fine restaurants, to shop but it s also a great place for outdoor enthusiasts. Mill Valley, like the rest of Marin County, enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with winter rains and for the most, sunny, clear California-style days. Mill Valley has a unique microclimate as a result of the numerous box canyons with sheer north-facing

4 Mill Valley Guidebook 4 slopes and dense forests at the city s southern and western limits and the dense coastal fog, which rises, over the hills. The area around Mill Valley is much cooler and moister than other regions near it. This microclimate is ideal for the Coastal Redwood forests, which to this day cover much of the town and surrounding areas. 2 SIGHTS The MARIN COUNTY CIVIC CENTER civic Wright's center last was major Frank Lloyd architectural undertaking. One-hour docent-led tours of the Civic Center are offered every Wednesday at 10:30 am, leaving from the second floor Café, Room 233. The cost is $10 adults, $5 seniors and students and no reservations are required. The center's website has self-guided tour map that's also available at the gift shop. Website:marincounty.org/depts/cu/tours Location: 3501 Civic Center Dr., San Rafael, CA Phone: (415) Hours: Weekdays 8am-5pm OLD MILL PARK To see one of the numerous outdoor oases that make Mill Valley so appealing, follow Throckmorton Avenue ¼ mile west from Lytton Square to Old Mill Park, a shady patch of redwoods that shelters a playground and reconstructed sawmill and hosts September's Mill Valley Arts Festival. From the park, Cascade Way winds its way past creek-side homes to the trailheads of several forest paths.

As participation increased, the fledgling festival was held in Lytton Square. In 1962, the festival was incorporated, became an independent nonprofit organization and officially changed its name to The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival and moved to its present site at historic Old Mill Park. $10 General Admission, $5 Students and Seniors. There are several hundred miles of trails in the State Park and adjacent areas such as the Marin Municipal Water District for you to explore. Because there are so many trails on Mt Tamalpais, we strongly recommend you bring a map with you. The incredible diversity of flora and fauna at Muir Woods can be daunting some times, elusive at other times. Muir Woods National Monument contains 6 miles of trails. There is a 1/2 hour loop, a 1 hour loop, and a 1 1/2 hour loop as well as longer hikes on trails that extend into surrounding Mount Tamalpais State Park.
