1 Backcountry Huts List and fees NORTH ISLAND General information Huts are great places to stay in the New Zealand backcountry. The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages over 950 huts throughout the country. Huts come in all shapes and sizes but have been broadly classified into four categories which reflect the level of services and facilities provided. Some hut services and facilities are seasonal, so plan ahead, check the details of facilities offered and be sure that you have the right equipment with you. SERVICES & FACILITIES Great Walk Hut (GW) These huts have bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses, toilets, water supply, hand washing facilities and heating with fuel available. There may be cooking facilities with fuel (no cooking utensils) and a warden. Note: Most Great Walk Huts require booking. Maximum stay periods apply. Serviced Hut (SV) / Serviced Alpine Hut (SVA) Serviced huts offer bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses, water supply, toilets and hand washing Standard Hut (ST) Serviced huts have bunks or sleeping platforms, mattresses, a toilet and water supply. They may have heating. Basic Hut/ Bivvy (B): Free of charge These huts offer very basic shelter with limited facilities and services. Backcountry Campsites (camping associated with huts) Campsites with very basic facilities are maintained near many huts. Hut facilities may be used. SEASONS Peak: 1 Oct to 30 April Off-peak: 1 May to 30 Sep Dates may vary locally depending on conditions such as avalanche danger Bookings and Fees FEES Fees are charged per person per night, unless otherwise stated. Pay your fees before you set out by purchasing a Backcountry Hut Pass, Hut Tickets or a Great Walk Hut Ticket from any DOC visitor centre. 2 BOOKINGS FOR GREAT WALK HUTS Bookings are required all year for: Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk huts and campsites. Book via Visitor Centre Abel Tasman Coast Track huts and campsites. Heaphy Track huts and campsites. Bookings are required in peak season for: Milford Routeburn Kepler Track huts Book at DOC visitor centres, online at or by When bookings are required; children and youth must still book and receive a Great Walk Ticket. Bookings are not required for: Whanganui Journey huts or camps Tongariro Northern Circuit huts or camps Rakiura Track huts or camps When booking is not required, you will still need to get a Great Walk Hut Ticket before you set out. Penalty fees of up to double the standard fee apply if pre-purchases are not made. The penalty fee for Youth is the full adult fee when pre-purchase of a Ticket is not made. Backcountry hut pass You can use the Backcountry Hut Pass to stay at many huts as well as Serviced Hut campsites and also where stated in the list below. Valid for 12 months from date of issue for $90, or 6 months for $60. Purchase from DOC visitor centres nationwide. Note: This pass is not valid at drive in Conservation campsites and most GW campsites The Backcountry Hut Pass is not valid at the following huts and associated campsites: Northland Conservancy Huts, Pinnacles Hut, Orongorongo Bush Valley Huts, Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park SVA Huts, Welcome Flat Hut, Westland Tai Poutini National Park SVA Huts, Mt Aspiring and Westland Tai Poutini National Park NZAC Huts, private or club huts on DOC managed land and Great Walk huts and campsites on Tongariro Northern Circuit (Oct-Jun), Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk, Whanganui Journey, Abel Tasman Coast Track, Heaphy Track, Routeburn Track (Oct-Apr), Milford Track (Oct-Apr), Kepler Track (Oct-Apr) and, Rakiura Track. Note: Backcountry huts can not be booked (with the exception of some North Island huts). Information about hut facilities and services Bunks in bigger huts are often sleeping platforms that allow a width of 75 centimetres per person. Gas cookers and fuel are usually not provided. During cooking open a window or door to allow dangerous carbon monoxide fumes to escape. Water is often supplied from rain water or stream filled tanks. The water borne parasite Giardia may be present. Boil water for 3 minutes before drinking if you are unsure of the quality. Enter your trip details in each intentions (hut) book as this information can assist in search and rescue. Candle holders are provided at most huts where lighting is not provided. To help hut keep huts clean and tidy, a broom, brush and pan are provided please use them. GW Huts often have wardens in peak season to check GW Tickets, provide track updates, weather forecasts (where they have a radio) and safety information. They may provide natural, cultural and historic interpretation about the park. Rangers also visit S and ST huts on a regular basis. Some huts are managed for their historic values, with original fabric, design and character still intact. Interpretation about historic values may be provided. Some services may differ from other huts. Backcountry huts do not have Any food, cooking utensils, pots, pans bring your own. Sheets or blankets take a sleeping bag. Rubbish collection take all your rubbish with you. Showers Toilet paper take your own.

3 Club huts There are recreation club huts throughout New Zealand. This list includes club huts open to the public and notes specific access or fee requirements where they vary from the national system. Look after huts and the environment - plan to leave no trace of your visit Leave huts clean and secure Carry a fuel stove for cooking Take all your rubbish with you Be considerate of other hut users Using this list Details of hut facilities are provided in the list below. Note that conditions, facilities and services change. Always check the latest notices at the nearest DOC visitor centre before you venture out and be prepared for all conditions. The Department consulted the New Zealand public in to determine a sustainable mix of recreation facilities. As a result some changes will occur in the provision of huts.
