The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages more than 00 campsites throughout New Zealand. Choose from lush forest settings, lakeshores and sandy beaches. 4 What to expect Fees will vary at some campsites. For prices at individual campsites, go to Serviced campsites* $8* adult; $9 child Serviced campsites have a wide range of facilities and services: flush toilets, tap water, kitchen/cooking bench, hot showers, rubbish collection and road access for all types of vehicles. Laundry facilities, BBQs, fireplaces, cookers and picnic tables may be provided. Scenic campsites* $* adult; $6.0 child These campsites are in high use locations and have a more limited range of facilities and services than Serviced campsites: toilets, water supply (tap, stream or lake) and vehicle or boat access. Wood BBQs and fireplaces, cold showers, picnic tables, a cooking shelter and rubbish bins may be provided. Standard campsites $8* adult; $ child These campsites have toilets, water supply (tap, stream, or lake) and vehicle or boat access. Wood BBQs and fireplaces, cold showers, picnic tables, a cooking shelter and rubbish bins may be provided. Backcountry campsites $6* adult; $ child Backcountry campsites have toilets and a water supply, which may be from a stream. Picnic tables, cooking shelters and fireplaces may be provided. Basic campsites no charge These have very limited facilities so campers need to be fully selfsufficient. Basic toilets and water may be from a tank, stream or lake. * Extra charges apply for powered sites: $ per adult; $.0 per child. Age categories for fees: Adult: Child: Infant: 8+ years 7 years 0 years, no charge. Booking and paying fees Bookings are required for all Serviced campsites and for some Scenic and Standard campsites in peak season (usually October 0 April). Most bookings can be made at or at a DOC Visitor Centre. Where bookings are not required, pay fees via the selfregistration system at the campsite, or at a Visitor Centre. These campsites operate on a first come, first served basis. Fees are generally charged per person per night, and reflect the level of facilities and services provided. DOC rangers patrol camping areas and will check that fees have been paid.

5 At the campsite Campsites and dogs Dogs are not permitted at Conservation Campsites unless the dogs permitted or dogs on a leash symbol is present. With most campsites located in or near protected areas it is important to keep your dog under control. Even the most obedient dog has the potential to kill wildlife. Dog owners who take their dogs into dog-prohibited campsites or controlled areas without a permit, or breach the conditions of their permit, are liable to prosecution. Controlling your dog also respects other people s rights to use and enjoy the outdoors. Find places that can take your dog at Take your rubbish with you DOC operates a Pack in, Pack out policy at most campsites there are no rubbish or recycling facilities. Campers should plan to take their rubbish away with them. Some campsites may still have limited rubbish collection services. For more information, visit No unauthorised drones An authorisation is required from DOC to use drones on public conservation land or near marine mammals for any reason including private use. To apply, visit Fire risk Open fires are no longer permitted at most campsites unless in a DOC-designated fireplace or firepit. Check the rules at your campsite. Protect our wildlife from disease Some of these campsites are in areas where native species are vulnerable to disease. You can prevent disease from spreading by following some simple precautions, including cleaning gear before and after entering these areas. Look for notices at the campsites and local DOC Visitor Centres for details. Didymo is an exotic alga that invades waterways. This microscopic pest can be spread by a single drop of water. Even if you can t see it, you could be spreading it. A large number of Conservation Campsites are near rivers and lakes, so always remember to Check, Clean, Dry all footwear, bicycles, vehicles, fishing equipment and other items before entering, and when moving between, waterways. 6 Kauri dieback is a disease that kills kauri trees. There is no cure and it can be spread through the movement of soil. But kauri trees can be saved. Help stop the spread: Clean all soil off your footwear and other gear, every time you enter or leave a kauri forest, and at every cleaning station. Use disinfectant only after you have removed all the soil. Stay on the track and off kauri roots. A kauri s roots can grow outwards three times as far as its branches. Spread the word within your networks on how to stop kauri dieback. Visit or call 0800 NZ KAURI ( ). Protect our wildlife and from invasive pests Some special campsites are located on islands free of most of our invasive pest animals and plants. We rely on you to help keep them this way. Inspect and clean your tent and other camping gear thoroughly before leaving home and between locations. Remove any mud (check the pegs and peg bag), sand, plant material, insects or animals such as mice or rats, Argentine ants and plague (rainbow) skinks and don t forget to check inside your tent. It s also important to check your clothing and footwear for weed seeds and soil before and after each trip. If you re taking a boat or kayak, check these too. DOC staff may make biosecurity checks of your footwear and gear when you arrive on an island to ensure your gear is pest free. Tuatara. Directions: Camp located at the end of Tapotupotu Rd off Cape Reinga Rd (SH), km south of Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua. Access: Gravel, steep sections. Directions: Follow signposts from Waitiki landing, off SH, for 6 km along Te Hapua Rd and then Spirits Bay Rd. Access: 6 km of gravel. Note: Pack your insect repellent. 9 NORTHLAND Maitai Bay 00+ Camp on the outer Karikari Peninsula in sheltered and private campsites. Directions: km southeast of Kaitaia on SH0, turn into Inland Rd at Karikari Peninsula and follow, then into Matai Bay Rd. Access: km of gravel. Booking: Not required first come, first served. Photo: DOC LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: SCENIC Raetea North Side 0 Camp in one of the last remaining lowland coastal forests. Look for kūkupa/kererū (wood pigeon), short-tailed bats and kākāriki/parakeets. Directions: 8 km southeast of Kaitaia along SH at Mangataiore. Follow the Raetea Reserve sign, and cross the stream ford to the campsite. Access: Gravel. Directions: Turn off SH0 at Pungaere Rd, 600 m north of Waipapa and follow signs to the camp. Access: 7 km of gravel. 10 NORTHLAND Urupukapuka Island Campsites 7 9 are on Urupukapuka, an island of significant historical and cultural importance. A great spot for fishing, swimming and water sports. Directions: Ferries to Otehei Bay leave from Paihia and Russell daily during peak season, water taxis run year round, or arrive by private boat. Information and booking: Phone Paihia i-site on (09) 0 7, book online during peak season or phone the DOC office on (09) Access: Boat only. 7 Urupukapuka Bay 60 Directions: From Otehei Bay Wharf, walk for min east along marked Otehei Bay track to the top of the hill from where you can see the campsite. LATITUDE: -.76 LONGITUDE: 7.86 SCENIC 8 Sunset Bay Directions: From Otehei Bay, turn right at the end of the wharf and follow the track towards the southwest end of the island, about 0 min. LATITUDE: -.68 LONGITUDE: 7.6 SCENIC 9 Cable Bay 0 Directions: From Otehei Bay Wharf end, turn right and follow the track towards the southern end of the island, about 0 min. LATITUDE: -.6 LONGITUDE: 7.98 SCENIC 0 Puriri Bay 90 Overlooking the mouth of Whangaruru Harbour, with sheltered waters for swimming and boating. Directions: Turn off SH into Russell Rd, km north of Whangarei. After 0 km (north of Ngaiotonga), turn into Whangaruru North Rd. Access: Sealed. Booking: Essential over summer, ph (09) 660. 11 Waikahoa Bay 0 Camp among pōhutukawa trees beside a sandy beach. Look out for rare brown teal/pāteke. Directions: From Whangarei, turn off SH at Whakapara into Russell Rd. Turn right at Helena Bay into Webb Rd. Continue to Mimiwhangata Coastal Park turn off. Access: 9 km narrow, winding gravel road not suitable for campervans and large vehicles. Campsite is a steep min walk from road, with no vehicle access. Access is through a locked gate. Booking: Essential over summer, ph (09) 6. Note: Tent only, walk-in campsite. NORTHLAND LATITUDE: -. LONGITUDE: 7.0 SCENIC Otamure Bay (Whananaki) 0 Camp in a beach-front setting with large pōhutukawa trees for shade. Directions: Go past Hikurangi on SH, turn off at Whananaki North Road and travel 7 km. Campsite is km past Whananaki shop and school. Access: Sealed. Booking: Essential over summer, ph (09) 80. LATITUDE: -.98 LONGITUDE: 7.6 SCENIC Trounson Kauri Park 8 Nestled on the edge of an ancient kauri forest. Shh... can you hear that? It s a kiwi! Directions: Turn off SH at Trounson Park Road, km north of Dargaville. Access: Sealed from south, gravel from north. LATITUDE: -.7 LONGITUDE: 7.69 SERVICED Uretiti 00 Camp behind the sand dunes at Uretiti Beach and explore the nearby Waipu Caves or walk the coastal track at Mangawhai Heads. Directions: From Auckland via passenger and car ferry to Tryphena or Port Fitzroy, private boat to Port Fitzroy, or air travel to Claris or Okiwi. Rental cars available for hire from Tryphena and Claris by arrangement. Access: Narrow gravel roads. Bookings: Required all year round, book early. Directions: Whangapoua Conservation Area, north coast of the island, near Okiwi, on the Whangapoua estuary. Access: From Auckland via passenger/car ferry or air. Booking: Required. 7 Awana Beach 60 Camp near the beach at Awana Bay; popular for surfing with a powerful surf break. Directions: Awana Recreation Reserve, east coast, Awana. 17 Fantail Bay 9 Camp beneath pōhutukawa trees in peaceful surroundings. Swimming, fishing, diving nearby. Directions: 0 km north of Coromandel. Take Colville Rd from Coromandel for km to Whangaahei Junction, then turn left and follow Port Jackson Rd for 8 km. Access: Gravel from Colville. Booking: Required December January. COROMANDEL LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.86 SCENIC Port Jackson At the northern tip of the peninsula, camp next to the beach with stunning coastal views. Directions: 8 km north of Coromandel. Drive to Fantail Bay (as above) and follow road for 8 km. Access: Gravel from Colville. Booking: Required December January. Directions: 6 km north of Coromandel. Drive to Port Jackson (as above), but continue 6 km to the end of the road. Access: Gravel from Colville. Booking: Required December January. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: SCENIC Stony Bay This is a spacious ( ha) campsite beside the coast with good fishing and diving nearby. Directions: km north of Coromandel. From Coromandel, take the Colville Rd for km to Whangaahei Junction, then turn right into Port Charles Rd to Stony Bay Rd and follow to end. Access: Gravel from Colville. 18 COROMANDEL Waikawau Bay Next to a sweeping sandy beach; NZ dotterel and variable oystercatcher breed north of the campsite. Directions: km north of Coromandel. Colville Rd for km to Whangaahei Junction, turn into Port Charles Rd, right into Waikawau Beach Rd and follow to camp. Access: Gravel from Colville. Booking: Required December March. Photo: Herb Christophers LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.70 SCENIC Kauaeranga valley Campsites 6 are beside the river in the Kauaeranga valley, a historical kauri logging area with a choice of walks and swimming. Directions: Follow the Kauaeranga Valley Rd from Thames for km to the Visitor Centre. Access: Sealed road to Visitor Centre. Gravel from there. Booking: Required. Campsites 6 can be booked online and are listed under Kauaeranga Valley camping. Decide on arrival which area to stay in. Note: Pay camp fees at the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre. Water from the tap at Visitor Centre. Treat water from the stream. 6 Kahikatea 8 A powered campsite for certified self-contained campers only no tents. large sites for buses. Directions: 00 m before the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre. Access: Sealed. Booking: Required. Book online or through the Visitor Centre. Arrange key collection at the Visitor Centre. Note: Water from tap at Visitor Centre. LATITUDE: -7. LONGITUDE: 7.68 SCENIC 7 Shag Stream Riverside campsite, an ideal base for exploring the valley. Walk to the replica kauri dam. Note: Open from Labour weekend (October) until 0 April. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.66 SCENIC 0 Booms Flat Popular and spacious campsite where dogs are allowed. Directions: 6 km north of Visitor Centre. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.60 SCENIC Catleys 0 A pleasant camp beside the river with great views of Table Mountain. Directions: 6. km north of Visitor Centre, first camp on right past the Visitor Centre. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.66 SCENIC Trestle View 0 Camp at the end of the valley, near the Billygoat Track and Webb Creek Track up to the Pinnacles. Directions: 9 km north of Visitor Centre, the last campsite past the Visitor Centre. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: SCENIC Billygoat Basin 0 This camp is on the popular Billygoat Circuit. Directions: From SH, just north of Hunterville turn west into Murimoto Road. Continue down Murimoto Road until you reach the domain. Access: Short gravel road. Note: No water provided, bring your own. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.97 BASIC Piripiri The campsite is in a small clearing next to the Pohangina River, with good trout fishing and hunting upstream of the campsite. Directions: From Ashhurst, drive north along Cambridge Ave/Pohangina Road, then right into Pohangina Valley East Road. Follow for approx km. Camp is just past the Takapari Road turnoff by the Piripiri Bridge. Access: Access for campervans only in dry weather. Sealed road. Short, steep access track may be slippery when wet. Notes: Keep dogs on a leash at all times. LATITUDE: -0.0 LONGITUDE: 7.97 BASIC Pohangina Base Campsite overlooks the Pohangina River to the west of the Ruahine Forest Park. Directions: From Ashhurst, drive north along Cambridge Ave/Pohangina Road, then right into Pohangina Valley East Road. Follow for approx km. Camp is approx km past the Takapari Road turnoff. Directions: Turn off SH km north of Masterton onto Kiriwhakapapa Rd, and follow 7 km to road end. Access: km of gravel road. LATITUDE: LONGITUDE: 7.6 STANDARD Holdsworth 0 Spacious campsite on the eastern edge of the Tararua Forest Park. Holdsworth Lodge (sleeps 8) also available. Directions: km south of Masterton, turn off SH at signpost to Mt Holdsworth, Norfolk Rd. Follow to Mount Holdsworth Rd. Campsite is km from the SH turnoff. Access: Sealed. Directions: From Carterton turn off SH onto Dalefield Rd, Jervois Rd, Moffats Rd. Turn onto Waiohine Gorge Rd and follow to end, approx. km from SH. 43 Bucks Road Picturesque campsite above the Tauherenikau River. Walk the Tauherenikau Gorge track or cool off with a swim in the river. Directions: minutes from Featherston, via Wakefield St, Underhill Rd then Bucks Rd to the end. Access: km of gravel with steep sections. Note: The site can get extremely windy. Otane LATITUDE: Waipawa LONGITUDE: 7.68 BASIC Waipukurau Otaki Forks 0 Open river terraces and regenerating bush surround the campsite, reflecting the farming and sawmilling history of the area. Dannevirke Directions: km south of Otaki, turn into Otaki Gorge Rd. Campsite is 9 km east of Otaki township. Access: Gravel and narrow, with one stream ford. Note: Campsite ranger on site over summer.
