1 January 24, 2012 Timothy A. Dabney, Acting Forest Supervisor Duluth, MN Dear Mr. Dabney, This letter is to let you know that on January 12, 2012 the Izaak Walton League of America, Minnesota Division, joined the Coalition to Bring Back the Pow Wow Trail. I would like to impress upon US Forest Service again that the Pow Wow Trail in the BWCAW is an irreplaceable and irretrievable resource. It is our hope that the US Forest Service will keep the 30 mile long BWCAW hiking trail open in the long term and focus on the future rather than short term challenges. I will be in Duluth in the late afternoon of January 31 on other FS meeting and would like to take that opportunity to meet with you briefly and make your acquaintance. Thank you. Sincerely, Martin Kubik BWA Committee, President, On behalf of the Coalition to Bring Back the Pow Wow Trail Cc: Coalition to Bring Back the Pow Wow Trail John Wytanis, District Ranger Mark Van Every, District Ranger Sue Duffy, Forest Recreation and Wilderness Program Manager Rep. 3 November 15, 2011 Jim Sanders, Forest Supervisor Duluth, MN Dear Mr. Sanders, The undersigned organizations are writing to formally request that the keep open permanently the Pow Wow Hiking Trail following the historic Pagami Creek Fire. Our organizations, most of which are actively involved in maintaining hiking trails within the and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, support hiking within the BWCAW as a legitimate means for experiencing the area s outstanding scenery and outdoor recreation potential. While hiking represents a relatively small proportion of the usage of the BWCAW, hiking trails like the Pow Wow nevertheless offer a unique experience within Minnesota. It is our hope that the Forest Service will preserve the trail for future generations instead of focusing on temporary difficulties in maintenance or considering building a comparable trail outside the BWCAW. The Pow Wow Trail was built as a direct result of the BWCA Wilderness Act of 1978, and as a wilderness trail it is irreplaceable outside of the wilderness. Because of its loop alignment, the Pow Wow Trail is a fabulous feature of the BWCAW. This makes it a 3 P a g e B r i n g B a c k t h e P o w W o w T r a i l! 1 / 2 4 /

4 popular destination for experienced weekend hikers. It is, in fact, one of the favorite trails for many of our volunteers. Again, we would ask you to keep open the Pow Wow Trail and to commit the resources necessary to allow BWCAW visitors to continue enjoying it into the future. We fully understand the challenges in recovering and maintaining the Trail in the near future. Our organizations are willing to assist in this effort. Sincerely, Bring Back the Pow Wow Trail!
