2 SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST CHARLESTON, NEW ORLEANS, DALLAS, SANTA FE Tour dates: October 26 November 10, 2019 Tour leader: Dr Matthew Laing Tour Price: $11,360 per person, twin share Single Supplement: $3,420 for sole use of double room Booking deposit: $500 per person Recommended airline: Qantas or United Maximum places: 20 Itinerary: Charleston (4 nights), New Orleans (4 nights), Dallas (3 nights), Santa Fe (4 nights) Date published: December 5, 2018 Overview The American South is home to iconic landscapes and diverse peoples, its unique history and environment long celebrated in art, music, literature and film. Yet the South is also home to some of the most enduring contradictions in American culture, from the Wild West and settlement of the frontier, to the Civil War and assassination of JFK. Join America expert, Dr Matthew Laing, on this new 16-day tour, exploring the history and culture of the South, from Charleston to French Louisiana in New Orleans, the great plains of Texas, and onto Santa Fe s ancient deserts. Diverse cultures and landscapes form the core of this tour. We start in Charleston, South Carolina, where we ll experience the iconic culture of the Old South and its stately plantations, as well as explore the complex and challenging legacy of slavery and the American Civil War, including a day trip to beautiful Savannah, Georgia, lush with its weeping willows and immaculate homes. In New Orleans we ll sample a unique mix of Spanish, French and Creole culture that comes together in exquisite Cajun cuisine, the origins of jazz music, and fascinating local traditions and beliefs. In Dallas we see the New South, complete with incredible art collections, as well as a taste of the Old West at the rodeo. Our final stop is in Santa Fe, immortalised by artists like Georgia O Keefe and at the crossroads of beautiful desert landscapes, ancient Puebloan Indians, and the Wild West. A four-day extension, to the Grand Canyon and Phoenix, is available for this tour. 4 Detailed itinerary Included meals are shown with the symbols B, L and D. Tour start & finish time The tour begins on Saturday 26 October at 5.00pm in Charleston, at The Mills House Hotel. The tour ends on Sunday 10 November in Santa Fe, with airport transfers arranged from midday onwards. Saturday 26 October Arrival and Introduction Above: Charleston s elegant French Quarter, with its cobblestone streets and pastel houses. This South Carolina port city was founded in 1670 Below: Jonathan Green s Corene (1995) at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Jonathan is an African-American painter best known for his vibrant depictions of the descendants of enslaved Africans who settled between northern Florida and North Carolina in the 19th century; and the charming leafy streets of Savannah s Victorian District Today our group meets together in Charleston in the late afternoon and will enjoy welcome cocktails and a group dinner together, followed by an introductory lecture on the history and culture of the South. Overnight Charleston (D). Sunday 27 October The Old South We start our tour this morning by strolling the fine collection of the 18th and early 19th-century townhouses of merchants and planters on the Charleston peninsula, one of the best-preserved historic districts in the USA. These large houses sit side-by-side with fine Georgian churches and oceanside mansions, as well as more modest dwellings, such as Catfish Row, and the Old Slave Mart, one of the last of its kind left preserved in America. This afternoon we travel along the Ashley River Road to visit the Palladian-style Drayton Hall, on one of the rice plantations which were once the backbone of Charleston s economy. After our tour, we will enjoy fine Madeira and southern canapes on the lawns. Overnight Charleston (B). Monday 28 October Art and War After a lecture in the hotel, this morning we join a cruise of Charleston Harbor, learning about the history of the harbor, before visiting Fort Sumter, where the first major military engagement of the Civil War took place, and see the American flag hoisted. We ll return to the city in the early afternoon for a guided visit of the Gibbes Museum of Art, an excellent regional collection of works by well-known colonial artists, displaying the artistic tastes of the 18th and 19th-century plantation aristocracy, as well as learn some of the history of piracy and war in this pivotal Southern port. Overnight Charleston (B). Tuesday 29 October Savannah We spend the full day in Savannah and its hinterlands. Savannah owes its beauty to the vision of James Oglethorpe, one of the 21 original British colonists of Georgia. Ogelthorpe laid out a street plan of 24 leafy squares. Around these squares

5 were built fine town houses, most of which survive. Savannah s beautiful houses and society is best known to us through John Berendt s popular book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. We ll take a walking tour of the town and its great houses, as well as the First Baptist Church, a key stop on the underground railway that smuggled slaves to freedom in the North. Our return journey will take us through the beautiful town of Beaufort, with stunningly preserved pre-civil War streetscapes, as well as the first school in the United States dedicated to educating the freed slaves. Overnight Charleston (B). Wednesday 30 October Onto New Orleans This morning we fly from Charleston to New Orleans, via Atlanta. After checking in to our hotel in the French Quarter we ll have an introductory talk and take a brief walking tour. Located on the site of the original settlement of the French Mississippi Company, most of the buildings standing today are actually from the period of Spanish control of the colony ( ). Our walk takes in the fine cathedral of St Louis, Jackson Square, the levee of the Mississippi River and of course Bourbon Street. Tonight, we dine at one of the city s finest restaurants serving a full tasting menu of characteristic Creole dishes. Overnight New Orleans (B, D). Thursday 31 October Seas, Swamps and Gardens Today is all about New Orleans relationship with the water, with a driving tour to some of the outer districts, including the famous Ninth Ward that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the levees that protect the city from the sea, and the beautiful Garden District. Overnight New Orleans (B). Above: Spanish Moss drapes over most trees in the wetlands of the South; and the jazz of food a New Orleans crawfish boil Below: Oak Alley, the historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River and one of New Orleans' most famous sugar plantations Friday 1 November The Mississippi Today we drive up the grand Mississippi River to two of the most important and best-preserved plantations in the region. We ll tour the majestic and picturesque Oak Alley, which immortalises the pinnacle of sophisticated Old Southern culture, and then after lunch explore the other side at the Whitney Plantation, where the local guides will uncover for us the lives and culture of the African Americans who lived there. After returning to New Orleans we ll attend a show at Snug Harbour, one of the city s better-known jazz venues. Overnight New Orleans (B). Saturday 2 November Creole Culture After a morning lecture, we ll continue our exploration of downtown New Orleans, with a guided tour of some of the great

6 houses in the area and colourful personalities in the city, while exploring in greater depth some of the unique cultures and peoples that made the city what it is, from the Voodoo occultists from Haiti to French-Spanish dons and friars. We ll have a group lunch at one of the smaller, more boutique restaurants in the city that serve unique and traditional Creole and Cajun dishes. The afternoon and evening are free, with the option of attending jazz or local music performances or letting your hair down on Bourbon Street. Overnight New Orleans (B, L). After lunch we ll venture downtown to the iconic Dealey Plaza, site of the 1963 assassination of John F Kennedy, and visit the book depository museum nearby where Lee Harvey Oswald forever changed American history. There will be free time in the afternoon to explore the city on your own. In the evening we ll take a ride to the top of the Reunion tower that overlooks the city and dine at Wolfgang Puck s Five Sixty with 360-degree views of the city. Overnight Dallas (B, D). Tuesday 5 November Fort Worth We have a day trip today to Fort Worth, once an independent city but now the twin city of Dallas. We ll tour some of the historic sites associated with this history and culture in the morning. After lunch you ll have a choice of visiting the Amon Carter Museum, which focuses on American and Western art, or the Kimbell Art Museum, located in a stunning pavilion designed by Louis Kahn and featuring one of the best collections of European art in the United States.
