We begin with four nights in Chicago, the second city of the United States, brimming with fine buildings, art galleries and exuberant public sculpture. It is also a living museum of incredible architecture, from the world s first skyscrapers to the early works of Frank Lloyd Wright. We then travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, touring the city's rich history and taking a day trip to America s most famous house, Lloyd Wright s Fallingwater. We make a stop then in Gettysburg, the iconic battlefield of the American Civil War that proved to be the turning point of the conflict, immortalized in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Then over four nights in Washington we witness how the grand aims of the Union are expressed in monumental art and architecture, explore the incredible collections of the Smithsonian Institutions, see American politics up close in the national capital, and take an excursion to Thomas Jefferson s remarkable Monticello estate in Virginia. We'll stop then in Philadelphia, where the American Declaration of Independence was penned and the new nation was born. Our tour concludes in New York, home to an extraordinary range of cultural sites. Over 5 nights, we'll see some of the world's finest galleries and cultural institutions, including MoMA, the Metropolitan Opera, Broadway and Guggenheim Museum. Accommodation is in comfortable four-star hotels, with breakfast daily and several meals at carefully chosen restaurants included, as well as a selection of great performances from the best that Chicago, Washington and New York have to offer. He has a strong personal interest in architecture, cultural history and modern art, with a particular expertise in the United States. 3 Tour Highlights FALLINGWATER The ultimate expression of organic architecture, we enjoy an indepth tour of Wright s most famous design, Fallingwater, the home built for the Kaufmann family on top of a waterfall. This weekender reignited Wright s career after a decade of no major commissions and within 12 months he was on the cover of Time magazine. The American Institute of Architects describes Fallingwater as the best all-time work of American architecture. GREAT GALLERIES This tour showcases some of the very finest collections of art to be found, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. You ll see many of the world s great masterpieces, from Van Gogh s Starry Night and Picasso s Les Demoiselles d'avignon, to Renoir s Luncheon of the Boating Party and Wood s American Gothic. MONTICELLO Monticello is the home of Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States. Set in the beautiful Virginia countryside and designed by Jefferson himself, it is a masterpiece of American colonial architecture and a living museum to his incredible mind and varied interests. It s also a unique window into America s past, preserved as a working plantation from the antebellum era. AMERICA S CAPITAL In an era of unprecedented turmoil in American politics, see its iconic seats of power up close in Washington D.C. including the United States Capitol, the White House, the Supreme Court, and a special lecture on the American political system today. We ll tour the National Mall, and its iconic memorials to past leaders and presidents, including the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. CHICAGO S ARCHITECTURE Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper and with an incredibly rich architectural history, from Frank Lloyd Wright s early beginnings in Oak Park and the Robie House, to resplendent early skyscrapers by Louis Sullivan and Daniel Burnham, to modernist landmarks by Mies Van Der Rohe and Fazlur Khan. And now complemented by its most recent masterpiece of urban design, Millennium Park.

Wednesday 3 April Chicago s Early History We begin with an introductory lecture and a walking tour of Downtown Chicago, exploring the city s early architecture and history, including the Marquette Building, the Rookery Building and the Cultural Center, as well as many of the world s first skyscrapers designed by Louis Sullivan and Burnham & Root. After lunch we visit the spectacular Driehaus Museum, home to exquisite art nouveau design and the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany. In evening, we have a welcome dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Chicago (B, D). Thursday 4 April Frank Lloyd Wright s Early Years Today we take a private coach tour of Oak Park. This Chicago suburb is where Frank Lloyd Wright lived and worked and where much of his early work can still be found. We will tour his first home and studio, as well as his early houses in the area. We also visit Unity Temple, a Universalist church designed by Wright and built between 1905 and In the afternoon, we visit the Robie House, one of Wright s most important houses, as well as the Jackson Park area of the city. Schedules permitting, this evening we ll see a performance from Chicago s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre. Overnight Chicago (B). Friday 5 April 5 Chicago s Modern Story We start our day with an architectural cruise down the Chicago River, where many of the great skyscrapers of Chicago s modern history can be viewed uninterrupted in a cityscape constantly under construction. We ll then tour through Millennium Park, which has redefined the modern city. In the afternoon, we ll take a specially guided tour through the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the great art collections of the United States, and with plenty of free time in the afternoon to explore the collection at leisure (B).

5 Saturday 6 April Pittsburgh We depart Chicago this morning and fly to Pittsburgh, a city whose wealth came largely from its steel industry. This wealth has contributed to the city s rich cultural heritage and few patrons were as generous as Andrew Carnegie, a Pittsburgh based industrialist who made his fortune out of steel and endowed many of the city s cultural institutions. After checking into our hotel, we take a downtown walking tour of this extraordinary city and see some of the historical and architectural highlights. This evening we have a group dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Pittsburgh (B, D). Sunday 7 April Fallingwater We depart Pittsburgh early today and make our way to Frank Lloyd Wright s Fallingwater. Completed in 1939, its dramatic setting over a river and revolutionary modernist architecture made the house instantly famous. Built for the wealthy Kaufmann family who made their fortune in retail, Fallingwater was a private retreat until the early 1960s when the house and several hundred acres of land around it were entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. In the afternoon, we ll return to Chicago to visit the spectacular Carnegie Museum of Art. Overnight Pittsburgh (B). Monday 8 April Gettysburg Today we drive through the lush forests of Western and Southern Pennsylvania to Gettysburg, one of the most important battlefields in United States history. Over three days in July 1863, in a battle regarded as a turning point in the American Civil War, almost 50,000 men were killed, wounded or reported missing at Gettysburg. Later that same year, President Lincoln delivered his famous address on the battlefield and today the site is a poignant memorial. After touring the battlefield we ll stay overnight in this charming and well-preserved 19th century town. Overnight Gettysburg (B). Tuesday 9 April American Art and Culture This morning we drive to Washington D.C. We ll visit the incredible collection at the National Gallery of Art and take a guided tour of some of the major movements and iconic names in American art over the centuries. After settling into our hotel, we ll have a group dinner tonight in a local restaurant and schedules permitting see a performance in the beautiful Kennedy Center. Overnight Washington (B, D). Wednesday 10 April The National Capital Washington D.C. was constructed on a grand scale to reflect the ambitions and the accomplishments of the United States

6 throughout its short history. Today we ll take a panoramic coach and walking tour of the National Mall, including the iconic Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. Afterwards we ll have a chance to take in the United States Capitol through a special guided tour, as well as see the Supreme Court, the White House and the Library of Congress. Thursday 11 April Jefferson s Monticello We ll take a special day trip today to Charlottesville, Virginia, the long-time home of Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and one of the greatest minds in American history. His personally-designed home Monticello is a testament to his renaissance character but also the complex legacies of America s colonial past. We ll also get to see his personally designed University of Virginia campus nearby, as well as the verdant Virginia countryside in full-bloom. Overnight Washington (B). Friday 12 April Great Collections This morning we ll visit the Phillips Collection, one of the finest modern art collections in the United States renowned for its exceptional pieces, including Renoir s Luncheon of the Boating Party. This afternoon we ll keep free, and it s a great opportunity for everyone to explore further one of the Smithsonian Museums, or take an optional trip with your tour leader to Arlington National Cemetery and through Georgetown, the beautiful colonial-era riverport around which Washington D.C. sprang. Overnight Washington (B). Saturday 13 April Philadelphia Today we make an early start for Philadelphia, home of the American Revolution and iconic sights such as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, which we ll see in a tour of the old city centre. After lunch, we ll take a guided tour of the Barnes Foundation, a unique gallery and one of the largest collections of great masters such as Matisse, Picasso and Cezanne. In the late afternoon, we ll journey on to New York City. Overnight New York (B). Sunday 14 April The Big Apple This morning we ll start with a trip up the Top of the Rock, the top of the landmark Rockefeller Center to get a bird s eye view of the city. We ll then take a walking tour of Midtown, with sights such as the Chrysler Building, Lever House, Grand Central Terminal and the United Nations. The afternoon is free. Monday 15 April Museum of Modern Art With an early start we ll take a private, before-hours tour of one the world s greatest art collections, the Museum of Modern Art. There will be plenty of time for exploration of the collection after our guided tour. In the afternoon we ll venture downtown to the heart of the action in New York City, and see the iconic sights of Wall Street, the Woolworth Building, the Brooklyn Bridge and the 9/11 Memorial Site. Tuesday 16 April 16 The Metropolitan Museum of Art Today we ll take on the other great art museum of New York the Metropolitan Museum of Art a collection truly encyclopaedic in its scope and ambitions. Your tour leader will offer to take you through some of the most important pieces of the American collection, or you can wander through the gallery at your leisure and visit what interests you most. After lunch at the gallery, we ll take a walk through Central Park, New York s unique urban landscape, and take in some of the carefully designed viewpoints and terraces. This evening we ll take in a Broadway musical or play. Overnight New York (B). Wednesday 17 April Chelsea and SoHo This morning we ll make our way uptown once again for the Frick Collection, one of the best collections of Old Masters in the United States, all within the beautiful beaux-arts mansion of its namesake, industrialist Henry Clay Frick. After that, we ll take a ride downtown to Chelsea. After lunch at the Chelsea Markets we ll take a stroll down the serene High Line running through the district. There will be time in the afternoon for those interested to visit either the nearby Whitney Museum or go shopping in nearby SoHo. As it s our last night together, we ll have a relaxed farewell dinner at one of the city s best restaurants. Overnight New York (B, D). Thursday 18 April 18 Farewell On our final morning together, we ll have the option to visit the Guggenheim Museum, known internationally for its groundbreaking Frank Lloyd Wright modernist design and its avant garde collection, or the nearby Neue Collection, now world famous for its possession of Klimt s Woman in Gold. Alternatively, for those interested there s time to fit in some lastminute shopping on 5 th Avenue. Airport transfers in the afternoon and evening (B). Spring is arriving, but not yet the crowds and heat that comes with May and June. Expect daytime temperatures of degrees celsius, dropping to 5-10 in the evenings. It is likely to rain on a few days of the tour, so be sure to pack an umbrella and waterproof jacket. Fitness Requirements of THIS tour GRADE TWO It is important both for you and for your fellow travellers that you are fit enough to be able to enjoy all the activities on this tour. To give you an indication of the level of physical fitness required to participate on our tours, we have given them a star grading. Overnight Boston (B) Friday 19 April American s Colonial Past Boston is the site of the earliest European settlement in North America, and we begin our tour with a walk along the Freedom Trail from Boston Common to the North End. Along the way we visit sites such as the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House and Paul Revere s house, and visit the Beacon Hill historic district. In the afternoon we visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, little changed since Mrs Gardner died in The charm of this museum lies in its setting a Venetian palazzo in Boston s Fenway district and the fact that it is a highly personal collection, including works by Titian, Rembrandt, Manet, Singer Sargeant and many others. Overnight Boston (B) Saturday 20 April Boston Art and Architecture This morning we visit Boston s vast Museum of Fine Arts, which contains fine collections of early, modern and contemporary American art, 19th century European art, Greek and Roman antiquities and an outstanding collection of Asian Art. In the afternoon we take a tour of Back Bay, planned and developed in the late-19th century and today one of Boston s most desirable neighbourhoods, and home to the extraordinary Boston Public Library and Trinity Church. In the evening we meet for our farewell dinner. Overnight Boston (B, D) Sunday 21 April JFK and Departures In the morning after checking out we ll take a special trip to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, a living memorial to Massachusetts s favourite son and 35th president of the United States, situated in a stunning I.M. Pei building overlooking Dorchester Bay. TRAVEL INSURANCE Academy Travel requires all participants to obtain comprehensive travel insurance. We offer a comprehensive policy with a reputable insurer if required. PASSPORT AND VISA A valid passport is required for all international travel. If you do not hold an Australian passport you may require a re-entry permit. Some countries require a visa to be issued before you depart Australia. We will advise you of all passport and visa requirements, but it is your responsibility to ensure that you meet passport and visa requirements before you depart. WILL THE TOUR PRICE CHANGE? If the number of participants in a tour is significantly less than budgeted, or if there is a significant change in exchange rates Academy Travel reserves the right to amend the advertised price. If this occurs you will be given the option of canceling your booking and obtaining a full refund. If an Academy Travel tour is forced to cancel you will get a full refund of all monies paid. WILL THE ITINERARY OR AIRLINE CHANGE? Occasionally circumstances beyond the control of Academy Travel make it necessary to change airline, hotel or to make slight amendments to daily itineraries. We will inform you of any changes as soon as they occur. FINAL PAYMENT Full and final payment for the tour, airfare travel, insurance and any additional travel you book is due 60 days before departure. Payment may be made by bank deposit, cheque, cash or credit card. Please note there is a surcharge for payments made by credit card. Academy Travel reserves the right to decline the booking or terminate the holiday of any traveller.
