Overview The cities of Chicago, Boston, Washington and New York boast some of the best endowed cultural institutions in the world. These cities are also rich in history, from first European settlement, through the struggle for independence and the Civil War to the emergence of the United States as a major power in the 19th and 20th centuries. The country s rapid industrialisation in the 19th century with booms in mining, transportation, construction and telecommunications combined with a strong sense of an emerging national identity, led in the 20th century to America s pre-eminent position as cultural arbiter. Cash-strong and Ivy League-educated industrialists turned their interests to collecting Old Masters, flooding the art market after stock market crashes and political upheaval in Europe. At the same time, key sponsors of contemporary art encouraged a new generation to continue re-interpreting and challenging conventional art. Out of this emerged both superlative collections of European Masters and a vibrant modern expression of American aesthetics and cultural identity. This 16-day tour begins with four nights in Chicago, the second city of the United States, brimming with fine buildings by leading 20th-century architects, art galleries and exuberant public sculpture. We then travel to Boston, scene of the earliest European immigration and a thriving 19th-century literary and artistic culture. Four nights in Washington reveal how the grand aims of the Union in monumental art and architecture, also sponsored by the industrial philanthropists of the late 19th century. The tour concludes in New York, the greatest city of the 20th century and home to an extraordinary range of cultural sites. A highlight of the tour is a private visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Accommodation is in comfortable four and five-star hotels throughout. We have included several special meals in selected restaurants and enjoy high-quality performances in some of America s most respected venues. Tour leader Dr Kathleen Olive is well known to Academy Travellers. Her knowledge, experience and people skills will add to your experience. Tour Highlights Four nights in Chicago, with a particular focus on the genesis of Frank Lloyd Wright s distinctive style The eclectic collection in Boston of Isabella Stewart Gardner, patron of John Singer Sargent and Old Master enthusiast The treasure trove of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston Four nights in Washington DC, visiting major monuments and galleries as well as private homes, art collections and gardens Five nights in New York, with visits to some of the great private and public galleries, and a special out-ofhours viewing of the 20th-century masterpieces in the Museum of Modern Art High-quality performances in Chicago and New York, at some of the finest venues in the country

Detailed Itinerary All breakfasts included. Included lunches and dinners are indicated by the letters (L) and (D). Friday 21 October Arrival Arrival into Chicago and welcome drinks with your tour leader. Overnight Chicago. saturday 22 October downtown chicago The Great Fire of 1871 destroyed the entire Chicago CBD, leaving the way open for architects to design a new and modern city. The first steel-framed high rise building rose in 1885 and the skyline today is densely packed with skyscrapers, many by renowned architects. Our walking tour this morning takes us past some of the city s most iconic buildings. We visit the lobby of the Rookery Building, the masterpiece of Daniel Burnham and remodelled by Frank Lloyd Wright in In the afternoon we take the Chicago Architectural Foundation river cruise to gain an overview of the city s historic and modern architectural styles. Tonight we enjoy a welcome dinner in a fine local restaurant. Overnight Chicago (B, D) Above: Chicago has long been at the forefront of modern developments: Anish Kapoor s Cloud Gate Below: Grant Wood s American Gothic are only two examples sunday 23 October Chicago art and architecture We begin our day with a walk through Millennium Park. Originally occupied by railyards and parking lots, the area was redeveloped into a public space featuring an outdoor concert venue, gardens, restaurants and some spectacular art installations. From here we make our way to the highlyregarded Art Institute of Chicago, boasting a fine collection of both European and American painting and over 60 decorated rooms accurately reconstructed furnished interiors from a broad range of times and places. After a private guided tour, there is a group lunch on site and further time to explore the collection independently. In the evening, we attend a performance at one of Chicago s highly-regarded venues. Overnight Chicago (B, L) monday 24 October frank Lloyd wright the early years Today we take a private coach tour of Oak Park. This Chicago

suburb is where Frank Lloyd Wright lived and worked and where much of his early work can still be found. We have an interior tour of Wright s home and studio. In the afternoon we take an interior visit of Robie House, perhaps the fullest expression of Wright s Prairie style in Chicago. Our trip takes us through the White City the site of the 1893 World Fair. Schedules permitting, tonight we will attend a concert performance. Overnight Chicago (B) tuesday 25 October to boston We take a morning flight to Boston, the site of the earliest European settlement in North America. We orient ourselves to the city on the Freedom Trail, from Boston Common to North End. Along the way we visit sites such as the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House and Paul Revere s house. Overnight Boston. (B) wednesday 26 October 19th-century boston This morning we visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The charm of this museum lies in its setting a Venetian palazzo in Boston s Fenway district and the fact that it is a highly personal collection, little changed since Mrs Gardner died in Her collection includes works by Titian, Rembrandt, Manet, Singer Sargent and many others. In the afternoon, we visit the home and studio of Frederick Law Olmstead ( ), generally regarded as the founder of American landscape architecture. Olmstead s influence is hard to overestimate: his works include New York s Central and Prospect Parks, Boston s Emerald Necklace, the Biltmore Estate and the Niagara Falls Reservation. Overnight Boston (B) Above: stainless steel statues at the monumental Korean War Veterans Memorial, Washington (photo by tour leader Dr Kathleen Olive!) Below: Anders Zorn s light-hearted Isabella Stewart Gardner thursday 27 October fine art and fine minds We begin today with a visit to Boston s vast Museum of Fine Arts, which contains excellent collections of early, modern and contemporary American art, 19th-century European art, Greek and Roman antiquities and an outstanding collection of Asian art. Many Academy Travellers rate this museum as the artistic highlight of their visit to the USA. There will be a group lunch in the museum s restaurant and time to explore the collection independently. In the afternoon, we travel to Harvard Square and stroll around the Yard, also viewing some of Cambridge s

historic houses, including the Longfellow House. Overnight Boston (B, L) Friday 28 October to washington After our morning flight to Washington, we leave our bags at our hotel and head out for a panoramic coach tour of the city, visiting the presidential and war memorials which line the National Mall, stretching between the Capitol and the Potomac River. The evening is at leisure. Overnight Washington (B) saturday 29 October the great galleries of washington This morning we visit the National Gallery of Art, containing a comprehensive collection of American and European art of very high quality. You will have the chance to join guide-led tours or explore your own tastes in a collection spanning the Middle Ages to the 21st century. This evening we attend a performance at the Kennedy Centre. Overnight Washington (B) Sunday 30 October patrons, benefactors, eccentrics We spend today considering the very different collections of two great patrons of the 1920s. Duncan Phillips was a great enthusiast of modern art. The son of a window-manufacturing millionaire, Phillips began with a small collection which he built out into a superb group of works, from El Greco and Goya, through to Cézanne, Manet, Degas, Picasso and beyond. The Phillips Collection is a wonderful museum that explains the connection between American and European painting in the late 19th/early 20th century and has been open to visitors since After time for lunch, we make the short journey to Dumbarton Oaks, the house and gardens of Mildred Barnes Bliss and Robert Woods Bliss, who focused their energies on collecting pre-columbian artefacts and Byzantine art. The gardens were designed by Edith Wharton s niece, Beatrix Farrand, and contain buildings designed by Philip Johnson. Overnight Washington (B) Above: Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Washington, D.C. Below: The Phillips Collection s iconic Luncheon of the Boating Party Monday 31 October portraits of America s finest This morning we visit Washington s National Portrait Gallery.

In addition to a fine collection of portraits of the country s elder statesmen many by celebrated artists the Gallery s portraits of magnates and industrialists allow us to meet the great patrons whose passion inspired the works we survey throughout the tour. Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick and John Jacob Astor are all represented. In the afternoon, there is free time to explore Washington s other wonderful collections e.g. the Smithsonian relax or indulge in some shopping! Overnight Washington (B) Tuesday 1 november to new york We leave this morning, travelling towards New York. En route we stop at the Barnes Foundation, on the outskirts of Philadelphia. The Foundation boasts many fine works by Renoir, Matisse, Cézanne, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso and others. We continue along the New Jersey turnpike to New York, where we share a simple evening meal. Overnight New York (B, D) Wednesday 2 October on the upper east side We begin the day with a visit to the iconic Guggenheim, a late architectural gem by Frank Lloyd Wright and home to a wonderful permanent collection of late 19th-century painting (Solomon Guggenheim s personal passion) and 20th-century Modernism (the particular obsession of his niece Peggy). The nearby Neue Galerie is an excellent example of contemporary art patronage, sponsored by Ronald Lauder, the son of cosmetics entrepreneur Estée Lauder. It focuses on German art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and has made important developments in gallery ethics particularly in certifying the provenance of works sold during WWII. After a break for lunch, we explore the vast collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While founded as a public art repository by New York State decree in 1870, private philanthropy has always been key here and acquisitions and conservation continue to reflect these dual interests. You will have the opportunity to join docent-led tours that focus on aspects of the collection that you are particularly interested in. Schedules permitting, we will attend a performance tonight. Overnight New York (B) Images right: the Neue Galerie and the curving embrace of the Guggenheim, NYC

Thursday 3 november the new masters of new york This morning we take a private walking tour of the contemporary art scene in the Chelsea district, visiting studios and small galleries. The tour is hosted by the Municipal Art Society of New York. Chelsea contains over 500 galleries displaying the very finest in contemporary art. After lunch at the bustling Chelsea Market, we explore the High Line, a greenway thoughtfully constructed on the site of a disused elevated railway. It has rejuvenated a previously tired area of the city and is a wonderful example of the conservancy that historically led to the creation of iconic sites such as Central Park. Another important factor in the renewal of the Meatpacking District will be the new Whitney Museum of American Art, which recently relocated from its storied Upper East Side location to a large new premises designed by Renzo Piano. Its creation was due to the patronage of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney heiress, artist, philanthropist and it is particularly strong with respect to American painting since the 1950s, with Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Robert Rauschenberg all well-represented. Tonight we attend a performance at the Met Opera. Overnight New York (B, L) Friday 4 november sculpture: from the middle ages to the Hudson river valley We begin the day by driving uptown to The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dedicated to the medieval collection. It is located in Fort Tryon Park and housed in magnificent cloisters dismantled in rural France and Spain and recreated stone-by-stone in New York, thanks to the generosity some might say rapacity of John D. Rockefeller Jr. Among the significant pieces are the Limbourg brothers Book of Hours for the Duc de Berry, and episodes from The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries. After time for lunch, we continue into the Hudson River Valley, where an innovative and memorable sculpture park has been established amongst the rolling hills and beautiful deciduous trees. Storm King Art Center was founded in 1960 and spans almost 500 acres. Works by Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and Richard Serra are dotted around the park, along with many site-specific works, and are easily visited on foot or on the museum s trolley bus. Overnight New York (B) Images right: the High Line, NYC; and sculpture at Storm King, in the Hudson Valley

Saturday 5 november moma and the frick This morning we enjoy a private tour of MoMA New York s celebrated Museum of Modern Art taking place before the museum opens its doors to the public. Following the tour you have free time to explore the museum s collections. After lunch we explore the outstanding Frick Collection, housed in a Fifth Avenue mansion. In his lifetime, steel-baron Henry Clay Frick amassed an outstanding collection of contemporary and European Old-Master paintings, among them instantly recognisable masterpieces by Holbein, Vermeer, Gainsborough and Turner. The lovely garden, a quiet oasis designed by 20th-century garden architect Russell Page, has recently been saved after expansion threatened its survival. There is time this afternoon to stroll through Central Park before our farewell dinner. Overnight New York (B, D) Sunday 6 november jp morgan s house and library This morning we enjoy the wonderful Morgan Library and Museum. In 1906, magnate JP Morgan decided to build a library worthy of his magnificent collection of manuscripts and printed books. Architectural firm McKim, Mead and White obliged, and the palazzo-style residence (with an extension by Renzo Piano) now also contains his drawings and paintings by masters such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt and Botticelli. In the afternoon there is a transfer to the airport for departures and ongoing travel (B) Images right: a Renaissance revival of art patronage, Flemish manuscript illumination in Catherine of Cleves mid-15th century Book of Hours (now in the Morgan Library, top) Additional travel AND stopovers We are more than happy to arrange additional travel either before or after the tour dates. Stopovers on the outbound or return flight are also possible for those wishing to break their journey. Please contact Stuart Barrie at stuart@academytravel.com.au or on (02) to discuss your requirements.

To give you an indication of the level of physical fitness required to participate on our tours, we have given them a star grading. Participation criteria for this tour This Grade Two tour is designed for people who lead active lives and can comfortably participate in up to five hours of physical activity per day on most days, including longer walking tours, challenging archaeological sites, climbing stairs, embarking and disembarking trains and/or boats, and a more demanding tour schedule with one night stops or several internal flights. You should be able to: keep up with the group at all times walk for 4-5 kilometres at a moderate pace with only short breaks stand for a reasonable length of time in galleries and museums tolerate uncomfortable climatic conditions such as cold weather negotiate steps and slopes on archaeological sites, which are often uneven and unstable get on and off a large coach with steep stairs, train or boat unassisted, possibly with luggage move your luggage a short distance if required A note for older travellers If you are more than 80 years old, or have restricted mobility, it is highly likely that you will find this itinerary challenging. While we will do our best to reasonably accommodate the physical needs of all group members, we reserve the right to refuse bookings if we feel that the requirements of the tour are too demanding for you and/or if local conditions mean we cannot reasonably accommodate your condition. visa requirements In order to enter the United States all travellers are now required to complete an online form, the US government s Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (or ESTA). Full details are available at In making the application you will need details of your arriving flight to the USA and also need to provide the name and address of the first hotel we are staying at: Omni Chicago Hotel 676 North Michigan Avenue - Chicago, Illinois Phone: (312) The cost of the ESTA is currently USD $14 and you should receive an authorisation immediately. Print a copy of your ESTA and carry it with you on your flight. USA travel advice Overall, the United States is a safe place to travel, but you should take sensible precautions. There is no need to feel concerned while on tour just be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings at all times. Tipping is widespread in the United States, and often baffling and slightly distasteful for Australian visitors. Every service provider from a taxi driver to a hairdresser expects a tip of 15-20%. Whether you agree or not with tipping as a principle, it will be expected and as a visitor you will find yourself reminded about gratuities in a most unsubtle fashion. Group tips to restaurants, drivers and local guides are included in the tour cost. The cost of medical services in the USA is very high and it is essential you have good insurance coverage. Check carefully the limits to coverage for medical expenses, disruption of your travel plans, theft, repair and replacement of luggage on your policy. If you are not satisfied with them, look for another policy or talk to the insurance company about having limits raised. This is especially important for older travellers, as many policies limit the amount paid for medical claims according to your age.
