10 At 900 acres, this is Delaware s largest-ever reforestation effort While rapidly growing Sussex County races toward the future, The Nature Conservancy s Delaware Chapter tries to turn back the clock at the Pemberton Forest Preserve s Ponder Tract. Once dedicated to timber production, Ponder now welcomes back native hardwood forest. With an established trail system throughout, Ponder gives visitors a front-row seat to the transformation from former working lands into native coastal forest. NINE MILES OF FOREST TRAILS Location: Approximately four miles west of Milton on Route 16, north side. Watch carefully for entrance. Plenty of parking inside, after a short lane. Distance: Up to nine miles of trails depending on how many you choose to hike and loop together. Trails are well marked. Some are logging roads. Calories burned: figure about per hour depending on how vigorously you walk. If you re planning pizza that night, walk faster and longer Parking: Plenty of room for cars and bicycles in marked, but unpaved, area inside entrance. Highlights: This is Delaware s largest-ever private reforestation effort. Trails wind through 900 acres of pine and hardwood forest. The area is used heavily by a wide variety of songbirds. Deep quiet offers plenty of opportunity to hear a wide range of bird songs and calls. Closed during hunting season. No fee required. NATURE CONSERVANCY - PONDERS TRACT Turning off Route 16 between Milton and Ellendale, the ample parking lot is immediately in sight. Tract information is readily available at the weatherprotected kiosk. Please sign the attendance register The Ponder tract harbors such wildlife as the bobwhite quail, raccoon, Eastern box turtle and the majestic pileated woodpecker. Monarch butterflies will play and flutter around the tract from July through the end of August, before they depart south in migration to Mexico and Costa Rica. Old logging roads are referred to as Governor s Way, Connector Spur, Ingram Branch Way, Frog Pond Trail, Piney Fork Lane, Pemberton Loop and Ponders Road. All totaled, there are approximately nine miles of trail roads. The Preserve s trails feature interpretive and directional signage as well as benches. Public access and parking is just off of Route 16, about two miles from the Route 30 intersection or about four miles from the Route 16 intersection with Route 13 in Ellendale. For more information, contact Debbie Heaton (302) x124; dheaton@tnc.org), or visit the Places We Protect section of the Delaware Chapter website: Delaware. Spend the day with your lunch and plenty of tick and mosquito repellent. Ponders Tract is sheer solitude. Walt Bryan compiled this information and photos. Inside the entrance to the Ponders Tract hiking trails is plenty of parking and a kiosk with trails information. 10 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

12 Walking makes us healthy and healthy makes us happy One of the greatest forms of exercise for most of us who are not hindered by an orthopedic problem is the simple act of walking. Ever since we learned that skill in infancy, we have been using it to get where we wish to go. Walking for the benefits of cardiovascular exercise is a pleasure that we can enjoy at most any age. We don t need to have a reason to walk, although there are so many good benefits. Enjoy the world around us, which is so easily missed if we spend most of our time in an automobile. Take time to smell the flowers, see the birds and other living creatures around us, and appreciate the world in which we live. Many of us can thank our pet dogs for needing to take that walk, but we should also do it for our own edification. Walking is one of the safest forms of cardiovascular exercise that we can enjoy. We are able to tailor our distance and speed to meet our particular desires and capabilities. Continuous walking for 30 minutes at least three times a week is a great way to start a walking program. Your heart, your blood pressure, your weight control and your psyche will all benefit from a regular walking program. Be reminded that we can make our weight control a lot easier than trying diet alone. Blood pressure and cholesterol will be lowered with the addition of a good walking program. Our hearts will appreciate our efforts of aerobic exercise. Long ago we learned that a sedentary lifestyle is dangerous for our health. Think of others and occasionally participate in a fundraising walk or run. During the good weather there will be frequent opportunities to join a walk for various charities, not just large national organizations, but also many of our local charities to help our neighbors in need. Remember to bring along a bottle of fluid so as not to become dehydrated especially in the hot humid weather. Take advantage of some of the great walks in Sussex County as presented in this guide, and you will be a happier person. From the canopied forests, the myriad of marshes, the seaside vistas, to the simple walk on the beaches, each has its own pleasures awaiting our participation. Enclosed in this booklet are a few of the best walks in our area that we have enjoyed and know that you will also. 18 JUNCTION AND BREAKWATER TRAIL One of Delaware s most popular trails connects Lewes, Rehoboth The Junction & Breakwater Trail lies between the resort towns of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach on the western edge of Cape Henlopen State Park. It is Delaware s third and longest rail trail in the state and one of the most important economic and fitness boosts for eastern Sussex County in this young 21st century. The trail gets its name from the rail line that ran between Lewes and Rehoboth in the mid-1800s. It follows the former Penn Central Rail Line that once transported passengers to the many Methodist resort camps along the Atlantic coast. JUNCTION & BREAKWATER TRAIL FACTS Distance: 6 miles from Cape Henlopen High School to Rehoboth Beach The Junction & Breakwater Trail officially opened Dec. 4, 2003, and consisted of a 3.6-mile crushed stone trail that extended from Hebron Road in West Rehoboth northward to the Wolfe Glade trestle. The trail deadended there until June 4, 2007, when an additional 2.4-mile corridor officially opened, extending the existing Junction & Breakwater Trail to a total of 6 miles. At the Lewes end, the improved trail begins at the Gills Neck Road and Kings Highway intersection opposite the entrance to Cape Henlopen High School. Before turning into the Hawks Eye development just off Gills Neck Road, the trail parallels the road and passes Cadbury at Lewes s continuing care retirement community as well as farm fields slated for eventual residential and commercial development. An alternate way to access the trail is to follow Gills Neck Road from the Savannah Road drawbridge in Lewes. This scenic route takes walkers and riders along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and through the rural - but developing - outskirts of Lewes. Riders and walkers should exercise care and discretion in this area because there are no shoulders; but with common courtesy there is plenty of room for motorists, bicyclists and walkers. Using this alternate, walkers and bicyclists can pick up an improved trail, paralleling Gills Neck Road just west of the entrance to the Wolfe Runne development, leading to the Junction & Breakwater Trail. From Gills Neck Road, the trail makes its way through the Hawks Eye development before reaching the old - now improved - railroad bed leading to Rehoboth Beach. There are also access points and park- Calories burned: About 450 walking or 300 bicycling Parking: Cape Henlopen High School (when school s not in session), public lots in Lewes, by Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach, behind Tanger Outlets Seaside Center on Rt.1 or at the end of Wolfe Neck Road, by McDonald s and Wawa on Rt. 1 Trail Highlights: Two great destinations - Lewes and Rehoboth Beach - connected by a well-maintained trail that passes through woods, marshes, fields and residential. The trail is flat and, depending on weather, good riding and walking all year long. This view from the Holland Glade railroad trestle shows some of the coastal marsh beauty of the Junction and Breakwater Trail. 18 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

19 near McDonald s and Wawa on Route 1 - and behind the Tanger Outlets Seaside Center near The Glade Road. Riders from the Rehoboth Beach end can head out of town over the Lewes- Rehoboth Canal drawbridge and take a right onto Church Street. They can then turn left past the church and follow the road that passes the entrance to Canal Corkran. That road intersects with Hebron Road at which point riders can turn left to get to the Hebron Road entrance to the trail. That stretch of the trail goes between storage units and the West Rehoboth community before passing behind The Tides development and then onto a winding and wooded stretch before crossing The Glade Road and heading north to Lewes. Riders out of Rehoboth can also choose to turn right at Hebron Road and follow a shoulder trail to another crossing of The Glade Road near the Rehoboth Beach Little League park. This spur of the trail joins up with the main trail to Lewes near another spur that goes to the Tanger Outlets Seaside parking area. The trail, according to materials provided by Cape Henlopen State Park, follows along the historic rail corridor through wooded and open terrain and provides scenic vistas of coastal marshes at the Wolfe Glade and Holland Glade bridge crossings - two recognized natural areas. The wide, graded trail traverses coastal forest and farm fields. For many visitors to Delaware beaches, the stretch of Route 1 from Lewes to Rehoboth Beach gives the impression that Sussex County s natural values have been completely overrun by commerce. Little do they know that the western reaches of Cape Henlopen State Park extend practically to the back lot of the stores along the main highway. Hiding from the sounds of travelers and shoppers are glades, marshes and pine forests leading all the way to the ocean. The trail includes an 80- foot long railroad bridge originally built in 1913 that crosses Holland Glade and provides views of coastal wetlands and of a World War II observation tower on the coast. 20 Delaware promoting better health with AN message There s a saying in the world of physical fitness: you can t out-exercise a bad diet. It means that optimal health requires a balance between a good diet and exercise. For the past seven years, Dr. Karyl Rattay, a pediatrician, has been promoting a program known as Almost None. She developed and branded the program when she was with Nemours Health and Prevention Services and is continuing to spread the word through her position as director of Delaware s Division of Public Health. The goal of the program is to promote a healthier lifestyle for children and families by encouraging a daily routine for a positive change in behaviors. Five stands for five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Nature has packed disease-fighting nutrients and natural energy into fruits and vegetables. Two stands for no more than two hours per day in front of a screen such as TV, video games and recreational computer time. A number of studies show a correlation between watching television and obesity. One means at least one hour of physical activity per day. Studies show that children and adults who spend time outdoors tend to be more active. Physical activity, especially when it gets the heart pumping faster, helps maintain a healthy weight and overall good health. Finally, almost none refers to almost no sugary beverages: No more than two servings per week of soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit juices that aren t 100 percent juice. Rich Killingsworth, chief of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention for Delaware, said Dr. Rattay is determined to make the Almost None message pervasive in Delaware. We want the message to be out there in work sites, restaurants, schools, day care centers, boys and girls clubs, churches and the community at large, said Killingsworth. We want there to be very visible pressure that these are very important behaviors to be aware of and to adopt as individuals and families. The true test is whether we can convert the messaging into action and sustain it over time. He said the Markell administration is also interested in creating a supportive environment so the culture begins to change toward a more active lifestyle. The initiative to build connecting trails between all 56 municipalities in the state is part of that program, said Killingsworth. If the trails are there people will get outside and use them. He said in Sussex, the county council, the Sussex Health Coalition and Sussex Outdoors are all working together to promote the message inherent in the Almost None approach. We have to gain the trust of the people, said Killingsworth. This is the type of investment that pays huge dividends for a long period of time. When we see people getting outside more, that will be an indication of a healthy community. Until we see children hardwired to be active, and older adults seeking socialization instead of being isolated in their homes, we will know something is wrong. A few tips for living the Almost None lifestyle Here are a few tips adults can use to encourage children to live the Almoct None lifestyle: Serve at least one fruit or vegetable at every meal and snack. Try all the different colors. Try and try again. It may take children several tastings (10 or more) before they begin to enjoy certain foods. Be a role model: Limit your own screen time. Play, take a walk, or cook with your kids instead. Keep the TV in a central location, out of your child s bedroom. Keep it off during dinner. Talk instead. Plan one physical activity for the family each weekend. Let the children take turns choosing the activity. Drink water, milk and juice yourself. Kids learn by example. Don t bring sugary drinks home. 20 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

22 CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK GORDONS POND This trail s observation platform looks across pond and ocean Gordons Pond is a 900-acre saltwater lagoon located in Cape Henlopen State Park. The 2.7 mile Gordon s Pond Trail passes to the west of the pond, ending at Herring Point, a beach area popular for both surfers and surf fishing. This walk will be of special interest to birdwatchers, as it is located on one of four migration superhighways in North America. The trail begins at the north end of the Gordons Pond parking lot, near the GORDONS POND TRAIL picnic pavilion. Access to the 500-space Gordon s Pond asphalt parking lot is on the north end of the town of Rehoboth Beach at the end of Ocean Drive, through the community of North Shores. This is a popular recreation area that may fill during summer days, so early arrival is advised. The first 1/2 mile of the trail is handicapped-accessible, and follows a wellmaintained, hard packed, crushed stone path frequented by walkers, bikers, and joggers. Leashed pets are allowed on this portion of the trail. This easy route through intermittent shade is surrounded by typical area foliage, including pines, wax myrtle, and grasses, with an occasional hardwood tree. Benches are available where scenic views of the lagoon and wildlife can be enjoyed. At the end of this section of trail is a handicapped-accessible observation deck, offering beautiful views of the pond, two World War II observation towers, sand dunes, and the Atlantic Ocean. Posted on the observation deck is information about some of the various birds that may be spotted in the area - gulls, ducks, osprey, heron, egrets, geese, and terns. If you choose to continue beyond that point, you will notice the trail takes on a different personality. The remaining two miles of trail are more rugged, Distance: 2.7 miles to the Herring Point parking area in the northern section of Cape Henlopen State Park. Make it close to 5 miles by returning to the Gordons Pond parking lot via the beach. Calories Burned: about 250 for one way. Parking: Gordons Pond parking area north of Rehoboth Beach, via Ocean Drive through North Shores. Trail Highlights: A totally accessible hard-packed trail skirts the pond for the first half-mile to a handicapped-accessible observation platform that looks over the pond. In winter, fall and spring, Gordons Pond is a popular resting spot for a wide variety of waterfowl and winged predators. The rougher dunes and pond trail beyond the observation tower is a locals favorite with magnificent views of the ocean and windsculpted dunes reminiscent of small-scale southwest deserts. There is an endless variety of photogenic views at Gordons Pond. 22 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

23 with a surface of loose sand or grass and little shade. The final 1/2 mile is over loose sand dunes, with PVC pipe marking the route. Pets are not allowed, and portions of this section may be closed seasonally for nesting or hunting. Call the Cape Henlopen State Park at to ask whether the section beyond the observation tower is open. There are also muddy and wet spots in this section of the trail so wear appropriate boots or be prepared to get dirty and soggy feet. In the fall of 2013, the state will begin improving this section with a hardened trail that will continue all the way to the Herring Point section of the north end of Cape Henlopen State Park. The new construction will include a 2,000- foot plus boardwalk across saltmarsh just east of a ridge of walking dunes to connect with the trail-laced pine forest in the northern section of the park. Completion is expected by spring From this section of the trail, wooded islands in Gordons Pond are visible where ospreys nest and where bald eagles are frequently seen perched on bare branches, surveying the watery world around them. Gordons Pond is a favorite haven in the winter for snow geese, Canada geese and a wide variety of ducks all of which make for rich hunting grounds for the eagles. After following the trail that rises from the pond onto a series of walking dunes and arriving at Herring Point, ocean lovers may choose to make the return trip on the beach. Be aware that surf fishing is allowed on the beach, so expect vehicles and fishing lines stretching into the surf. Turn inland at the stone jetty beyond the twin observation towers to return to the Gordons Pond parking lot. Cape Henlopen State Park, including the Gordons Pond area, is open from 8 a.m. to sunset daily, with an entry fee charged May 1 through October 31 ($4 for Delaware licensed vehicles; $8 for out-of-state vehicles). Portable toilets are the only facilities available at both the Gordons Pond and Herring Point parking areas. Chris and Terry Rasberry contributed this article. Sussex County Walks & Trails Spring

26 Boardwalks and beautiful views of inland bays make this trail special Burton s Island Loop is an easy 1.5 mile trail through salt marsh and coastal forest with beautiful bay views. The trail is on sand and upland soil and is made easier with a series of newly constructed boardwalks. The boardwalks provide views of the Indian River Bay, the Rehoboth Bay and of the open salt marsh. The island features an inland bay habitat that supports a variety of birds, plants, fish, reptiles and mammals. Burton s Island is the largest island in a series of islands that separates Rehoboth Bay from Indian River Bay. The trailhead is located at the northern end of the Indian River Marina across a man-made causeway. Signage is sparse so keep going to the end of the marina property on the north side of Indian River Inlet or ask for directions in the marina office. The trail is easy to walk and would be a good choice for a family outing. It is not unusual to see wading shorebirds, ospreys, Great Blue SEASHORE STATE PARK BURTON ISLAND Herons and muskrats (or at least their tracks). When I walked the property I startled a deer on the way in and encountered a red fox as I was finishing the hike. I recommend hiking this trail in the early spring or fall or bring plenty of insect spray in the summer. The trail was closed for several years for repairs but is currently open and better than ever Note: Please stay on the trail while visiting the island. The island provides important nesting grounds for the Diamondback Terrapin. Trail use is recommended during the cooler months of the year. Bob Lore contributed this article and photographs. BURTON ISLAND LOOP Distance: 1.5 miles around portions of Burton Island Nature Preserve. Calories Burned: About 200. Make the loop twice and get 400. Parking: Near the causeway that crosses to Burton Island at the north end of Indian River Marina Highlights: Great example of an undeveloped inland bays coastal island. 29 GET OUTSIDE AND HAVE FUN The City of Lewes prides itself on being a pedestrian, skateboard, rollerblading and bicycle-friendly community. The city maintains a 25-mile-per-hour speed limit on all streets for all vehicles which creates a safe environment. It also has an aggressive system of highly visible pedestrian crossovers where walkers have the right of way and which further encourages walking. There are a number of designated walks in town including the Maritime History Trail and several others with descriptions and maps in this trail guide. In 2013, Lewes is working with Delaware s Department of Transportation and Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control on creation of a new trail head facility on a portion of 5.5 acres the city purchased in 2012 at the corner of Monroe Avenue and Freeman Highway. Two significant trail projects will join at the trail head further enhancing Lewes s reputation as an outdoors town attractive to walkers and bicyclists. One of those trails will eventually link Lewes and Georgetown with a rail-with-trail project. The other trail that will end at the hub is the already-popular Junction and Breakwater Trail between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. For the past several summers Lewes has hosted a walking program called Lewes Steps Out For Fitness which has encouraged residents and visitors to get outside and log lots of walking steps. This year s program is being modified from previous years and will probably include a number of community walks. Keep an eye on local newspapers and the City of Lewes website at ci.lewes.de.us for further details on the 2013 program. Help Lewes become one of the nation s fittest towns. Sponsored by City of Lewes Beebe Medical Center Cape Gazette Quest Fitness Lewes Volunteer Fire Dept. The Lewes Steps Out For Fitness program for several years has been encouraging residents and visitors to get outside, be active, and get fit. 30 PRIME HOOK WILDLIFE REFUGE - BLACK FARM Starting in an enchanted tunnel, meander through old pastures The Black Farm Trail is one of a half dozen walking trails in the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1963 and meanders over 10,000 acres. The Prime Hook area is one of more than 530 refuge properties managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service across the USA; the most comprehensive wildlife management refuge system in the entire world. The refuge is open from 1/2 hour before sunup to 1/2 hour after sundown and the entry to Prime Hook starts at Turkle Pond Road off Route 16 East. Other walking trails in this local refuge include: The Boardwalk, Dike, Pine Grove, Photography Blind and Blue Goose trails. There is also a seven-mile canoe trail along Prime Hook Creek to the north. For the most part, the trails form a series of loops that are linked to the L-shaped Turkle Pond access road that brings a visitor from Broadkill Road (Rt. 16) at the south entrance to the refuge administration building at the BLACK FARM TRAIL Distance: 1.6 miles Calories burned: about 200 Parking: designated parking area at the trailhead along Turkle Pond Road which is the entrance road to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Take Rt. 16 east toward Broadkill Beach, from Rt. 1 north Trail Highlights: This is a natural trail that passes through woods and meadows and along the extensive freshwater marsh system of the refuge. Deer, eagles, redtail hawks and an occasional coyote have been seen from this trail. northeast. We visited the office before walking to obtain a map of trails and info on animal and plant life. Our initiation into the Prime Hook trail system began at the intersection of Turkle Pond Road with the Blue Goose and Black Farm entrance points. Black Farm Trail, which was named after the previously owned farm, begins at the east side of the road, marked with a couple of information kiosks adjacent to a small off-road parking area. We journeyed during a hot summer afternoon and we dressed defensively with long pants, collars and sleeves, sturdy shoes and socks and broad-brimmed hats. The flies were the most curious inhabitants but lost interest if we kept walking briskly. This trail began mysteriously with a long, dark-bowered arbor, dappled with splashes of intense sunlight and gleaming shadows. The total trail (one way) is listed as 1.6 miles, but due to the variety of views and variation of vistas as one moves clockwise along its route, it seems timeless. Along this enchanted tunnel with overhanging foliage, wood gnomes have placed small informative monuments to their furry fellow inhabitants: the beaver, whitetailed deer, gray and red fox, mink, muskrat, river otter, long-tailed weasel and woodchuck. At the end of the straight-tunnel segment, there is a link at the left which leads to the Photography Blind Trail (should you have the time and a camera). Continuing to the right along a treesheltered path, one is surprised by various glimpses of other worlds through occasional woodland windows: to the left, a glimpse of an overgrown pasture; to the right a sunbathed bed of wildflowers. We imagined the streams This is a trail for sauntering, from old pastures to old fields. lively and over-filled with wet meadow and marshland - but on our trek, the streams were dry and the vegetation was thirsty. We were imagining an early morning trail hike after a storm. Again, another turn or two and we arrived at a wooden observation structure aimed across an open field with long grasses to the right - a birdwatching opportunity or deer stand for hunters. The trail meanders through overgrown pastures, old fields, old growth tree stands and nearby wetlands with white and pink marsh flowers in bloom. We sensed the presence of Delaware Bay nearby. We saw a variety of habitats in densely tangled undergrowth and tried to remember to look high and low, as well as eye level. Further on, the path turned to grass and with a tall line of mixed oak and pine trees on the left, our view expanded exponentially on the right where deep cultivated farm fields lay below a distant wall of green. 30 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

31 We solitary travelers finally glimpsed the hand of man and after another turn in the pathway, the Prime Hook Recycle Center stood, awaiting deposits from local waste not, want not residents. From that anchor, we could choose to walk a short distance up the road to the starting entrance or stay on a return grassy route back to the tunnel. Our hearts were lighter and we could feel the stress lifting from our shoulders. A look at the kiosk for Black Farm Trail suggests that the total walk will take about 1/2 hour. But if you stop to smell the flowers, read the animal markers or take photographs, as we did, you should allow at least 1-1/2 hours for this upland adventure. Mike and Mame Cohalan contributed this article. This master map of the main headquarters area of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge shows several of the trails included in this guide. 32 PRIME HOOK REFUGE PINE GROVE TRAIL Shaded walk offers a Shangri- La view of Fleetwood Pond The first walking trail opportunity that reveals itself to the motorized nature-loving visitor to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is the Pine Grove Trail. Shortly after entering the refuge on Turkle Pond Road, off Route 16 east of Route 1, a gravel-paved roadway carves out an inviting view to the left and beckons as you pass it. One should submit to this temptation because there are a number of bonuses that are offered along this crunchy path. Bonus No. 1 is that it is a pleasant drive, passing fields on the left and driving under a canopy of tall trees with dense woodland on the right. Bonus No. 2 occurs halfway down the 3/4-mile-long road when Turkle Pond kisses the road in the form of a canoe launching area. Bonus No. 3 only appears after stopping at the generous cul de sac available for parking. There on the left is a Shangri-La view of Fleetwood Pond, with sunbeams dancing through the gentle pathway that leads to the meditation dock. Visit this pond in the autumn and you may see squadrons of Canada geese slicing through the sky, informing each other of their heading and course. PINE GROVE TRAIL Length: approximately.8 miles Calories burned: 200 at a moderate pace Parking: Cul-de-sac at end of first left off Turkle Pond Road Highlights: Nice vistas of two sparkling freshwater ponds: Fleetwood and Turkle. Time stops on the dock benches. It will be difficult to shift the mind to a more athletic mode. This sparkling water feature is surrounded by a wall of forest and disappears around the bend, making you wish you had a canoe. When you do pull away from this lens of peace, it will follow you on your path, fracturing the sunlight through the reflected web of branches shimmering on its surface. The suggested entry to the Pine Grove Trail is at the end of the cul de sac. A kiosk informs you that the Trail is 8/10ths of a mile in length and tells you that songs of the warbler, finch and tanager fill the air. If you are careful, you might see the endangered Delmarva fox squirrel or the white-tailed deer searching for dinner. Meanwhile, the woodpecker can be heard jack hammering a dead tree for his lunch. The route from this juncture is clockwise; the fragrant pine-needle carpeted corridor gently pulls you past its loblolly pine columnar walls. Be sure to look up often as you glide beneath the grove s vaulted cathedral. Almost midway and again near the end of the northern leg of your journey, your eyes will invite you from the looped route to the shore of Turkle Pond. Local lore claims the original owner couldn t quite pronounce the word turtle and thus the name was born. We may infer that this slow creature continues to outrun hares around the pond to this day. The discovery of this sister pond is a study in contrasts. One emerges from the dark forest to a wide-angle view of the distant northern shore, bathed by a forgotten sun. Returning from this second pond experience, one comes abruptly back to the access road, the mid-point of the journey. If time is fleeting, the road may be used to return to the point of origin, but a more adventurous trek would be a dive back into the cushioned, pineneedle path across the road. The southern loop of the trail also offers tall pine columns and lofty leaved vaults but is populated to a greater degree by low growth. This side has more of a wetland feeling. In fact, after a recent nor easter we attempted to follow its more sinuous path only to be turned back by an encroaching Fleetwood Pond. A brisk walking pace completes the entire loop in 15 minutes. Should you have a Sunday afternoon with the family (including babies), allow 1 1/2 hours for enjoyment of the dock and the trail. Trekking in the cool October air is virtually bug-free. One of the lovely features of the Pine Grove visitation is that it releases you slowly from its enchanted fingers. You still have that dappled drive down the gravel road to Turkle Pond Road and the refuge exit. The drive to the gate is cool and sheltered. Drive slowly. Let the magic linger. 34 CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK NORTH END You can walk and ride all day on this great system of coastal trails This wonderful, nearly 3,800-acre site at the mouth of the Delaware Bay presents a wide variety of trails for walking, riding bicycles and skating. There are four miles of continuous, sandy coastline. An enjoyable walking route is to follow the 3.5 mile bicycle route through the park. There are branches into the marshes, onto wide vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, and the unique experience of treading over the walking dunes on a 1.5 mile trail. These are dunes constantly on the move as a result of the heavy northeast winds that blow off the north Atlantic through many of the winter months. As they make their steady progression, they slowly devour the trees and shrubs that can t move out of their way. The observation area of the Great Dune is the highest point on the east coast between Cape Cod and the outer banks of North Carolina (between 80 and 100 feet). A designated walking trail traverses the pinelands in the center of the park (1.7 miles), which is usually a bit cooler during the heat of a summer day. Other worthy walking experiences include a walk to Delaware Bay from the Nature Center (a.6 mile trail), a tour of the old U.S. Army Fort Miles facilities with its rejuvenated heavy artillery guns, a stop at the distinctive military observation tower (or so-called fire tower built for triangulation and targeting of guns and mines), a respite at the main bath house snack bar, and a Frisbee course for those so inclined. Fort Miles was built by the Army in 1942 to protect the mouth of the Delaware Bay. The fort is in the midst of a restoration project. The park is a stopping point for thousands of migrating birds during the spring, who rest in the pines before making their way across the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Brown pelicans, bald eagles, osprey, red crossbills, terns, ducks, geese and the rare Peregrine falcon may be spotted. One of the oldest surviving species on earth, horseshoe crabs, lay their eggs on the bayside beaches. These eggs provide energy for migrating birds. Not to be missed is a view from the parking area near the Maritime Exchange Tower, where the sun sets on the Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse, although it is a distance better traveled via bicycle or car over paved roads. On many evenings, a large herd of deer can be seen on the parade ground along Cape Henlopen Drive, including one, mostly white piebald deer. Check yourself closely for deer ticks at the end of the day. The best parking can be found at the Nature Center, the Bath House, and at the Fort Miles/Observation Tower parking lots. The south end of the park includes the Biden Environmental Training Center (special programs), the Herring Point Observation area so popular among surfers and surf fishermen, and at the Rehoboth Beach end of Cape Henlopen State Park the Gordons Pond Trail. A casually marked, but local knowledge dune trail connects the north end of Cape Henlopen to the North Shores and Rehoboth Beach end of the park. 38 TOWN OF MILTON HISTORIC TOUR Shipbuilding past and Dogfish Head brewery mark this nice trail This walk goes through the heart of one of Sussex County s most historic communities, dating back to the early 18th century and named for the famed English revolutionary poet, John Milton, author of Paradise Lost. The walk begins in Milton s Memorial Park at the head of the Broadkill River. There is good and safe parking here and it s just steps away from bakeries and restaurants where you can enjoy coffee and pastries or sandwiches and a cold beer. (Just a few blocks away is the famed Dogfish Head brewery where you can take tours and buy some of this locally crafted beer. Ask anyone in town to point you there.) In the mid-19th century, this area at the head of the river was the site of an active shipbuilding industry that took advantage of native populations of straight-growing Atlantic cypresses and strong-grained oaks to build three- and four-masted schooners that plied the coastal trade routes of a developing new nation. The river was wider and deeper then and accommodated 10-foot drafts - at high tide - so that completed ships could be pulled by lines down the Broadkill River to the Delaware Bay. Our walk crosses a pedestrian bridge just below the Milton Public Library and passes behind Irish Eyes Restaurant where you can enjoy outdoor seating according to the season. Then turn left on Front Street in the heart of downtown and walk a block past the firehouse before turning right on Chestnut Street and heading up into the old residential district of Milton past many fine examples of 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. This stretch of the walk also passes Goshen Cemetery where you can stop in and familiarize yourself with some of the old English family names - Hazzard, Paynter, Isaacs, Betts and many more - that have figured so prominently in the town s history. Continue up Chestnut for a total of three blocks before turning right on Prettyman Street and then right again on Federal Street, the main street of the town. Go about a block and a half on Federal Street and then turn left between two houses on a brick walkway. Amble down a hill through a beautiful new park, with colorful plantings, benches and pergolas, toward the sparkling Wagamon s Pond. 44 Children In Nature program aims to get kids in state parks In an effort to reduce childhood obesity and make children healthier and happier, Delaware launched a Children in Nature initiative in The initiative recognizes the findings that show that children who enjoy unstructured outdoor play perform better in school and are less likely to develop diabetes problems that can plague them the rest of their lives. Delaware s State Parks have joined the initiative with their No Child Left Inside program promoting use of the state s parks. Here are some of the the specific steps that are being taken to encourage children and families to spend more time outdoors: Publication of a Teacher s Guide to Delaware State Parks, which outlines school field-trip and outreach opportunities to connect our classrooms to our parks. Partnering with Nemours Health and Prevention Services to sponsor free park entrance days at Cape Henlopen and Trap Pond State Parks last year, and adding more free days in the future. Creating a comprehensive website that includes locations of all green spaces and recreational opportunities throughout the state, informal education providers, and programming opportunities. Creating a Children in Nature Community award to recognize the amazing work individual communities are doing throughout the state. Expanding on Professional Development training to provide formal and informal educators more opportunities to share their knowledge, experience, and understanding. Beginning to develop the framework for an Environmental Literacy plan to ensure students graduating from high school are environmentally literate to promote the conservation of resources and build future stewards of the land. Expanding the number of schoolyard gardens and habitats, and developing an instructional guide and training to assist staff in using the school grounds more effectively. 46 TRAP POND STATE PARK BOUNDARY TRAIL Hikers and bikers alike will enjoy this shady western Sussex trail The Boundary Trail at Trap Pond State Park, near Laurel in western Sussex County is, at 4.8 miles, one of the longer trails in the county. It starts near the large picnic and pond area at the western end of the park and then heads southeast around the southern side of the cypress-studded pond. Near the beginning of the trail, make sure to stop in to the new nature center, an impressive structure designed by state employees and constructed from native woods. The trail, which includes long, winding stretches through hardwood forest, also skirts Wootten and Whaley s roads at the park s eastern end, crossing a scenic dam at Raccoon Pond. Bethesda Church and its associated cemetery along Whaley s Road are worth a stop and a closer look, especially for the BOUNDARY TRAIL headstones that feature artwork from a century gone by. A few hundred yards past the church, the trail dives back into the forest off of Whaley s Road and leads eventually to the 130-site Trap Pond camping area where visitors will find tent sites, yurts and cabins for rent on a nightly basis or for up to two consecutive weeks between May and the end of November. Just before the camping area, the Boundary Trail goes past Cypress Point where there are good views of the extensive stands of baldcypress trees, which thrive in the freshwater of the 90-acre pond. Birdwatchers should keep their eyes and ears out for the elusive but grand pileated woodpeckers that inhabit freshwater marshes with stands of cypress. Walt Disney fashioned his Woody the Woodpecker character after pileated woodpeckers. Those with a good ear for rhythm and sound may hear the pileated s distinctive song, which Disney also copied for his character. The size of a large crow, the pileated woodpecker hammers into the bark of cypress and other trees with the deep, resonating thumping of a jackhammer. If you see a large black bird winging through the trees with white flashes on its wings, take a closer look and follow its flight. If you see it land on the side of a tree, you will be rewarded with the unforgettable sight of its huge, red-crested head. The Boundary Trail continues through the campground, and then skirts around the western end of Trap Pond and another larger and scenic dam before turning back into the picnic area where it started. Walkers should count on an hour and a half to complete the circuit while bicyclists can make their way around in less than an hour. The trail has an excellent walking and riding surface. Boardwalk bridges in places provide a closer view of the freshwater swamp that gives way in places to the pond. Those who walk this trail and the trails in Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge will gain a better appreciation for the difference between Distance: 4.8 miles Calories burned: 400 walking, 250 biking Parking: Picnic area or campground area, Trap Pond State Park Tour Highlights: Trap Pond State Park is located in southwestern Sussex County, just off Route 24 east of Laurel. The Boundary Trail encircles Trap Pond, home of the northernmost stand of baldcypress trees in the U.S. The freshwater swamp studded with these stately trees is home to the elusive pileated woodpecker. The park also features a marked canoe trail on one of the waterways flowing into the pond. The park offers camping with cabins and yurts from May through November. Trap Pond is a freshwater mill pond studded at its upper end with bald cypress trees. The park has canoes, kayaks and other vessels available for exploring the pond. 46 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

47 Bicyclists and walkers will love the boardwalks through the forests of Trap Pond State Park. saltwater marshes and freshwater swamps. Trap Pond State Park offers a canoe trail for those who want to explore from the waterside and there are also horse trails for those who arrive with equine friends. Not far from Trap Pond is Trussom Pond which, opposed to the more open Trap Pond, is filled with the curious baldcypress trees. Those who take the time to visit Trussom Pond will think they have crossed the border into a far more southern state. Trap and Trussom ponds feature the northernmost natural stands of baldcypress in the United States. Both ponds have landing areas where people can launch canoes and kayaks for intimate exploring. Trap Pond was created in the late 1700s to power a sawmill for processing large baldcypress cut from the area. The Federal Government later purchased the pond and surrounding farmland during the 1930s and the Civilian Conservation Corps began to develop the area for recreation. Trap Pond became one of Delaware s first state parks in Maps and park information are available in the Baldcypress Nature Center at the park. Walt Bryan contributed this article and photographs. 48 CITY OF LEWES - TRENNY S LOOP This is an easy walk, with many elevated views of urban and wild TRENNY S LOOP Length: approximately 3.35 miles Calories burned: 250 at a moderate pace Parking: 1812 Park Public Parking Area on southwest side of Savannah Road drawbridge. Highlights: a nice urban walk with great architecture, parks, and marsh and canal vistas. Trenny s Loop is a healthy and pleasant walk around historic downtown Lewes. Several years ago, a group of six ladies started the daily morning walk as a fitness and social routine. The size of the group swelled and shrank depending on who was in town, but the first hour after daylight would usually find as few as two or as many as eight walkers on their stroll. Their course never varied and the ladies did it so often, they could walk it in their sleep. Rose Ksebe and the late Trenny Elliott, a long-time community supporter and activist, have been two of the most consistent members of the walking group. Trenny died of cancer in 2007 but up until she could no longer stand, she was a regular on the course that now bears her name. The walk is an excellent exploration of this beautiful waterfront area of Lewes. Trenny and Rose were neighbors on Gills Neck Road, their homes overlooking the canal. They would start their walk at 124 Gills Neck Road and head southeast toward Rodaline Avenue where the walk turns right. The walk then turns right again on Third Street and passes City Hall before it intersects with Kings Highway at the historic home of Revolutionary War hero Col. David Hall. Turning left on Kings Highway, the walk then heads southwest passing many fine examples of Victorian Lewes architecture as well as the Lewes Public Library and the pleasant grounds of the nicely maintained Al Stango Park. The park is named for a man who served as mayor of Lewes for 24 years in the last quarter of the 20th century. The walk then makes a hairpin turn onto the wide shoulder of Freeman Highway, named for astronaut Ted Freeman who graduated from Lewes High School. This long stretch of Trenny s Walk crosses the high bridge over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal with great views of the town, the canal and the marsh that becomes a bay during big northeast-driven high tides. To the southeast, the bridge looks over the marshes, pine forests and dunes of Cape Henlopen State Park and the distant, World War II-vintage fire towers. At the intersection of Freeman Highway and Cape Henlopen Drive, Trenny s Loop turns left where it passes a number of tall beach houses. It turns left again on the shoulder of Savannah Road, named for the broad marshes it crosses. The walk crosses the lower drawbridge that looks over the downtown and Fisherman s Wharf, a place where many people stop to admire and photograph stunning sunsets. Trenny s Loop, as taken so many times by Trenny and Rose, ends with a left turn onto Gills Neck Road just over the drawbridge and in front of the ladies historic homes where it all started. WILDLIFE NOTE: In the early morning and evening, Trenny s Loop offers This is a view of Lewes from the Savannah Road drawbridge. many wildlife opportunities. A blue heron that camps out by the drawbridge has been dubbed Bruce by the lady walkers and a nest of ospreys is near the Freeman Highway bridge. Whitetail deer can often be seen in the fields and marshes along Freeman Highway with flocks of Canada geese flying over. 50 CITY OF REHOBOTH BEACH & BOARDWALK This is a three-mile walk with a quiet loop in Henlopen Acres This is a three-mile walk through the residential neighborhoods of Rehoboth Beach and Henlopen Acres. It also features a one-mile stroll down the Boardwalk. Walkers can stop off at a variety of businesses and restaurants on Rehoboth Avenue as well as Baltimore and Wilmington Avenues. In Henlopen Acres, strollers will want to stop at the Rehoboth Art League to view the current art exhibit or just take a rest in the peaceful gardens on the property. Over mostly flat terrain that goes by both of Rehoboth s historic and unique freshwater lakes - Lake Gerar and Silver Lake - this walk can be completed at a leisurely pace in under an hour. Here are specific directions and a map for guidance. Start the walk at the north end of the Boardwalk where there is ample REHOBOTH BEACH, BOARDWALK, HENLOPEN ACRES Funland at dusk is magical. parking adjacent to the Henlopen Hotel. Proceed south on the Boardwalk for the first mile. Note the famous Dolle s Candy sign (at Rehoboth Avenue) which has become a Rehoboth landmark. The half-mile point is at Delaware Avenue where you will find restrooms, an information office and Funland, another historic site with rides and games for kids of all ages during the summer months. Leave the Boardwalk at Queen Street and turn left at the end of Queen Street onto Lake Drive. Follow the road around the north side of Silver Lake and the several gazebos on the lake shore. In winter, Silver Lake - a state-designated wildlife refuge - hosts an annually returning flock of stately Canvasback ducks as well as Canada geese, American coots and many other species of waterfowl. At Bayard Avenue turn right and walk north through the heart of Rehoboth Heights, the city s south side. The next half-mile point is in the vicinity of the intersection of Bayard and Laurel Street. Next, cross Rehoboth Avenue at the traffic light, passing the Post Office on your right and the western end of colorful Baltimore Avenue. Continue walking two blocks to the intersection of Olive Avenue. The east end of Lake Gerar may be seen across the street. Bear right on Olive and stroll to First Street where the next turn is to the left. Proceed north across the Lake Gerar bridge; this is at the two-mile Distance: three miles Calories burned: about 250 Parking: City parking spaces at the north end of the Boardwalk around the Henlopen Hotel. Metered in the summer, free in fall, winter and spring. Trail Highlights: The mile-long Boardwalk (capitalized because it s an official city street); Silver Lake (and its winter flocks of canvasback ducks) and Lake Gerar; the idyllic streets of Henlopen Acres; the historic, colonial, cypress shake-clad Homestead mansion; and the historic and lovely grounds of Rehoboth Art League. Continue north on Second Street across Columbia and Henlopen avenues to the entrance to Henlopen Acres where the road becomes Dodds Lane into the Acres community. Walk two blocks to a right turn at Rolling Road. After you turn on Rolling Road, the 18th-century Homestead and other galleries of the Rehoboth Art League will be on your left. The gardens and grounds of the Art League deserve a few moseying minutes. Even if the galleries are closed the day of your walk, there is remarkable outdoor art to enjoy as well as historic boxwood, azalea gardens and specimen trees identified in arboretum style. After walking one block on Rolling Road you will come to a right turn at Broad Hollow, the two and half mile point in your Rehoboth walk. Follow Broad Hollow and then turn right onto Zwaanendael (Dutch for Valley of the Swans) for the last half mile of your walk which leaves Henlopen Acres and merges with, and continues southward on, Surf Avenue for a final oceanfront stretch and a return to your parking lot at the Henlopen Hotel. Hoyte Decker contributed this article. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the beach as you walk the mile-long Boardwalk. Sussex County Walks & Trails Spring

They make it easy and fun to live the Almost None lifestyle: five servings of fruit and vegetables each day, no more than two hours of recreational time with a computer or TV screen, at least one hour each day being active outdoors, and almost no sugary drinks. That formula contributes to a healthy and enjoyable life. So grab an apple and a banana and some carrots too, throw them into a pack with some water or fruit juice, and head off to one of the trails in this guide to explore the great outdoors of Sussex County.

Hiking Tips If you are hiking for more than a couple of hours, be sure to take food and water. Hiking burns about 300 calories an hour and can dehydrate you quickly. Drink 1/2 cup of water at least every 20 minutes, more if it s hot or you are sweating profusely. Dress defensively; take along a poncho and sweaters to protect you from weather changes such as sudden rainstorms and from colder air, which can be up to 30 degrees lower on mountaintops. In areas where hunting is permitted, you should always wear bright colors. To hike comfortably, raise your fitness level to the point where you can walk 4 to 5 miles on level ground without undue fatigue or strain. Then start walking up and down hills. (Going downhill is actually harder than going up.) Take along a knapsack to get used to carrying extra weight. 55 NATURE CONSERVANCY MCCABE PRESERVE Hike along the Broadkill River or kayak from Milton here and back People who make the effort to visit Delaware Nature Conservancy s Edward H. McCabe Preserve Trail on the EDWARD H. MCCABE PRESERVE AND GREENWAY TRAIL Distance: 3 miles hiking and 2 miles canoeing Calories Burned: about 250 hiking and 350 canoeing (round trip) Parking: Designated area on Road Pole Branch Road (Road 257) between Rt. 1 and Hudson Road, just east of the Broadkill River bridge, and Cave Neck Road (Road 88). Large sign marks parking area. Trail Highlights: This trail includes views of the Broadkill River and rolling topography in high ground areas that is unusual in flat Sussex County. A birding brochure in a kiosk at the parking area notes more than 100 species of birds that can be found in this rich habitat. banks of the Broadkill River will be richly rewarded. Not only will they experience a unique hiking experience that includes topography unavailable elsewhere in Sussex County, they will also get to travel the pastoral Round Pole Bridge Road (Road 257) between Rt. 1 and Rt. 88 (Cave Neck Road). The road crosses Beaverdam Creek on a small but scenic bridge and passes several small spreads including one that pastures emus, llamas and long-horned cattle. A three-mile hiking trail loops through the 143-acre forested refuge that Constance P. McCabe donated to the Nature Conservancy in 1993 to be preserved in its natural state as a memorial to her husband and grandson. From a small, dedicated parking area just off Round Pole Bridge Road, the trail dives into a rolling woods of maples, gums, oaks, tulip poplars, dogwoods, hollies, American beeches and loblolly pines. It passes through a former meadow area that has been replanted to expand the forest and then follows an old, grassy road down a gentle hill toward the lazy Broadkill. A bench one of many on the trail affords a fine view down the river just before the trail reaches sea level and a dock. The dock serves as a take-out point for canoeists and kayakers who can paddle a twomile river trail between Milton s Memorial Park and the McCabe Preserve. For a full day of outdoor exercise and fun, people can combine the paddling trail and the hiking trail using Milton and its restaurants and parks as a fine point to start and end the adventure. The complete workout will include upper body and legs. Back to the trail: From the dock area where open grassy areas offer good picnicking opportunities, the trail follows the river for a while before turning up into a rolling section of hardwoods. The trees are larger in this area and the forest floor is cleaner and more open than in the opening sections of the trail. The trail hasn t been heavily used up until now so keep a close eye out for its turns. It is fairly well marked but it is still possible to get turned around a little. Take mental notes of where benches are and refer to the fine trail brochure available in the kiosk at the head of the trail to maintain a sense of where you are. The forest is relatively small so it s tough to get lost. As the trail loops back from its northern end, it heads away from the river and follows the reserve boundary and fields traditionally cultivated with corn and soybeans. For one fairly 56 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

56 short stretch, the trail emerges from the woods and follows a grassy stretch along the farm field. It then returns to the woods and eventually reconnects with the first part of the trail just north of the canoe dock. At that point you will be doubling back to the parking area on Round Pole Bridge Road. If you dawdle and take pictures, enjoy looking closely for wild flora and fauna. If you aren t in a hurry, it s easy to spend an hour and a half in the Mc- Cabe Preserve. Depending on the time of the year, take precautions against chiggers, mosquitoes, ticks, sunburn and poison ivy. The McCabe Preserve Trail winds through mature hardwood forest and goes up and down some of the rare hills in Sussex County, while offering nice views of the Broadkill. 59 LEWES MARITIME HISTORY TRAIL This trail spans four centuries of local history and technology Get on your bicycle for this one, or drive your car it s a long one out and back. The Lewes Maritime History Trail begins near the Roosevelt Inlet end of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal alongside the campus of University of Delaware s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. Look for one of the area s newest and most visible landmarks: The state s largest wind turbine. Powering the entire Lewes campus and 400 feet tall, the turbine was erected in the spring of In addition to the college campus, the trail recognizes nine other distinct aspects of Lewes rich maritime history: the Lewes Life-Saving Station, the MARITIME HISTORY TRAIL Distance: 4.3 miles from first stop to last Overfalls Lightship, the town s shipbuilding industry, the War of 1812, the lighthouses of the Delaware Bay, the menhaden fishing industry, the Delaware River and Bay pilots, the two stone breakwaters at the entrance of Delaware Bay and the Quarantine Station that was located in part of what is now Cape Henlopen State Park. Get on your bicycle, or hike if you want to make a day of it, and hit each of the stops to get a comprehensive - but not overwhelming - history of this seaport town with European civilizations dating back to the early 1600s, and Native American settlements thousands of years before that. You can use the map on the next page to get started and to help find the stops, or visit the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau in the 18th century Fisher-Martin House behind the Zwaanendael Museum on The trail starts with a mini walk through coastal flora at the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. Describing Lewes, the brochure notes, in part: It provided a fishery that grew into a major industry. It required boats that were built along the shores. It demanded lights that guided mariners, pilots to navigate the shoals of Delaware Bay, a great harbor to shelter ships from ice and storms, and courageous men to rescue the crews of stranded vessels. 60 war and pestilence to Lewes, but it also brought prosperity and a nationally important marine science center. The tour signs, brochure, research and execution were made possible in part by a Preserve America grant administered by the National Park Service. For those who take this tour on bicycle, a good way to extend the trip is to ride the bicycle trail in Cape Henlopen State Park which you will cross when making your way to stop No. 10 on the history tour. The park bicycle loop also has historical components as it winds through remains - with many interpretive signs - of the World War II Fort Miles Army facility. The most recent addition to the Fort Miles exhibits is a 16-inch (diameter of its shells) cannon similar to those once deployed in the bunkers of Fort Miles overlooking the entrance to Delaware Bay. The cannon, acquired in 2012, is the last of the 16-inch guns once mounted on the U.S. battleship Missouri. It is one of the cannons under which the Japanese surrendered to the U.S. at the end of World War II. Assawoman Wildlife Area is a yearround facility open from sunrise to sunset featuring a wide variety of songbirds, shorebirds, predators and migratory waterfowl. No fee is required. the south, the highrises of Ocean City, Maryland. Assawoman is a Native American word which means midway fishing stream. Created from the purchase of nine small farms by the United States Department of Agriculture in the 1930s, the tracts became the wildlife refuge and came under Delaware management in According to an automobile-tour brochure that can be picked up near the entrance to the wildlife area: Wildlife comes first here. The Wildlife Area is managed primarily for migrating and wintering water birds, white-tailed deer and bobwhite quail with money derived from a federal excise tax on guns and ammunition. Amphibians, reptiles, Delmarva fox squirrels and rare plant sites are given special protection. Human activities that do not hurt these resources are welcome. The major portion of Assawoman Wildlife Area lies on a peninsula bounded by Miller Creek to the north, Dirickson Creek to the south and Little Assawoman Bay to the east. A manystoried, metal observation tower on the road toward Mulberry Landing provides a bird s-eye view of the 65-acre pond to the north and Mulberry Pond to the south. Through the winter, a wide variety of geese and ducks rests on these ponds and songbirds find food and shelter in the loblolly woods just to the west of the tower. There is parking at the tower and from here you can walk toward Mulberry Landing to the south or Strawberry Landing to the north. Both landings offer good, waterfront picnicking opportunities. At Mulberry Landing, a heavy-beamed pavilion stands as a reminder of the economic stimulus efforts by the federal government in the 1930s to help people put out of work by the Great Depression. Local men working for the Works Progress Administration constructed the pavilion, which provides shelter and a picnic area. There is also a ramp for the launching of small motorboats, kayaks and canoes. Also at Mulberry Landing, an observation/photography blind offers a chance to observe wildlife up close and undisturbed. Ocean City, Maryland and the historic Fenwick Island Lighthouse can be seen across Little Assawoman Bay to the south. Assawoman Wildlife Area s network of roads offers a number of places to pull over, park and take walks and hikes. The first side road inside the entrance, bearing off to the left, takes walkers and drivers to Sassafras Landing, midway up Miller Creek. Around a bend further upstream, the Delaware State Police operate a summer camp for disadvantaged youth known as Camp Barnes. Bald eagles nest along Miller Creek, so be sure to scan the shoreline trees for regally perched birds with their trademark, brilliantly whitefeathered heads. Assawoman Wildlife Area also has separate areas in the region one north of Miller Creek where there are wilder hiking opportunities used primarily by hunters. Be aware of hunting seasons as you explore any of these areas. More information and maps for those areas are available at Delaware s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control website: www. dnrec.state.de.us. Visit with a friend over a walk instead of lunch or coffee, or use a cell phone and gab while you tool around the neighborhood on foot power. Walk somewhere you need to go. It s called running errands, but if you can walk when you do them, great Next time you have to pick up milk or mail a letter, walk to the nearest grocery store, post office or mailbox instead of driving there. Hit the stairs. It takes about the same time to wait for the elevator as it does to climb a flight of stairs. Walk the dog. Instead of letting him out in the backyard, give both of you some exercise by taking him (or letting him take you) for a jaunt through the neighborhood. Use your tube time. If you watch more than one hour of TV a day, invest in a treadmill and log a couple of miles during your favorite program. Park farther away. You won t have to fight for a parking space at the mall, the movie theater, or the grocery store, and you ll barely notice the walk to the door. Hustle at halftime. Next time you go to a sporting event whether it s professional football or your grandson s softball game don t stay on the bench. Get up and walk around during halftime, in between quarters, or during time-outs. Just steer clear of the hot dog stand. Pace while you re waiting. Hurry up and wait, it s a fact of life. While you re waiting in the airport, at the doctor s office, or at the take-out place, pace instead of sitting. Clean the house. There s no doubt about it: Housework is work. 69 SEASHORE STATE PARK FRESH POND A three-mile loop shows different sides of Seashore State Park Open for hikers, bikers and horseback riders, this relatively new and sparsely marked trail in Delaware Seashore State Park offers a three-mile loop perfect for exploring the park, and a 0.3-mile side trail that leads to a view of the Beach Cove off of Indian River Bay. The trail is wide with a grass or PRICKLY PEAR TRAIL packed-sand surface and fine gravel in some places, especially where it winds through a stand of thick, young pines. A 1/8-mile paved connector trail provides access from Route 1 at the north end of Fresh Pond. There s no parking on Route 1 at the terminus of that connector but it is convenient for bikers who want to access the trail from Route 1 or hikers coming from nearby oceanside communities. Similarly, there is an unpaved connector road at the south end of the Fresh Pond system. That connector road is just north of Fred Hudson Road, which leads to Cedar Neck Road. In the spring of 2010, that southern connector road, accessible to bikers and hikers, was most easily marked by a collection of Delaware Solid Waste Authority recycling containers. The road continues westward from those containers. The Prickly Pear Trail is named for the prolific coastal cactus that thrives in the arid, sandy climate. In late May and June, the cactus blooms with a brilliantly yellow waxy flower that transforms to an edible fruit. Distance: Prickly Pear - Three miles with longer side-trips possible Calories Burned: About 350 minimum Parking: Follow Hickman Road east from Cedar Neck Road, off of Route 1, to a parking area. 71 JAMES FARM ECOLOGICAL PRESERVE Open all year-round, this tract features many distinctive habitats The James Farm Ecological Preserve is a 150-acre tract of land that was a gift to Sussex County from Mary Lighthipe, the last descendant of the James family, that had farmed the land for generations. Sussex County in 1998 entered into an agreement with the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays to manage the property as an ecological preserve. Located on Cedar Neck Road just north of Bethany Beach in Ocean View, the James Farm is a delightful break from the surrounding development. A condition of the gift of the land is that the property be used for environmental education and recreational activities and that no permanent structure be erected there. The James Farm is open to the public from dawn to dusk 365 days of the year. Adjacent to the parking area is a garden of native plantings used to educate the public on what will be seen along the trails. There are signs posted along the trails to educate as well. There are seven distinctive habitats that you can encounter along the trails: the salty flats of low marsh with salt marsh cord grass and glass wort; shrubby high marsh with bayberry; marsh alder and salt marsh hay with loblolly pines; holly and red cedar of the maritime forest; a hardwood forest under a canopy of southern red oak; hickory, sweet gum and sassafras; and meadows once used JAMES FARM Distance: Six different trails cover two miles. Calories burned: About 225 walking. Parking: From Route 1 south of Indian River Inlet, turn west on Fred Hudson Road and then north on Cedar Neck Road. Turn left into James Farm Ecological Preserve and parking will be immediately evident. Trail Highlights: Hikers will find a variety of coastal habitats to explore at James Farm with well-marked trails and educational signs. One of the trails ends at an Inland Bays beach where clear water reveals a number of oyster farming experiments in progress. Birdwatchers will appreciate elevated blinds that look over forest and marsh. Those who sit quietly in the James Farm observation tower will have the opportunity to watch birds and animals in a natural setting. 72 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

They have benches along the way for those who need an occasional rest, and birdwatchers will be thrilled with the elevated blinds. The red trail ends at a boardwalk that leads to a sandy beach, which is excellent for relaxing and working on your tan. Hiking boots are recommended but not required. Insect spray would be wise in the warmer months. The day I walked the trails I mistook some of the flies for osprey The trails are not only educational and good exercise, but beautiful as well. 75 REDDEN STATE FOREST More than 44 miles of trails wind their way through 13,000 acres Located on 16 different tracts in the heart of Sussex County north of Georgetown, Redden State Forest s more than 13,000 acres offer 44 miles of trails enjoyed by hikers, birdwatchers and hunters. The most popular trail is a four-mile loop around the 1,836-acre headquarters tract along east Redden Road. According to forester Matt Hansen, the headquarters tract trail passes through a mix of hardwood trees and loblolly pines. Along the trail is a primitive campground outfitted with a number of sites for tenters and trailer campers. There are no electrical or wastewater hook-ups. HEADQUARTERS LOOP TRAIL The loop trail is well-traveled and easy to follow. In addition to going through thick growths of woods, the trail also passes through cut-over areas, across bridges through low-lying swamps and smaller meadow areas. Those who are more adventurous can take off on smaller trails that have been trod by hunters over the decades. The trail also passes an historic lodge constructed by Pennsylvania Railroad during that enterprise s heyday in the early 20th century. Railroad executives used the lodge for hunting excursions and conferences. Today it is available to groups for picnics, conferences and events. The classic lodge architecture is worthy of note. Hikers using the trails of Redden Forest are advised to keep track of hunting seasons as the woods are open for upland game hunters after deer, squirrels and rabbits. That s most of the time between fall and the first of the year so during those seasons it s best to wear bright orange to be safe, said Hansen. Delaware allows no hunting on Sundays so hikers can be a little more relaxed on those days during hunting season. Most of the forest land is open to hiking with many of the trails being Distance: approximately four miles. Forest s 16 different tracts have a total of 44 miles of trails. Calories burned: About 300 walking or 200 bicycling. Parking: Drive north on Rt. 113 from Georgetown and turn east on East Redden Road. Turn right into headquarters just past railroad tracks. Park at headquarters building which is on the right after fishing pond. Trail head and maps are nearby. Trail Highlights: Wide trails and flat walking also available for mountain bikers. Historic Redden Lodge is noteworthy. Lots of smaller, offshoot trails also available for those with less fear of getting lost and with plenty of time. Redden State Forest s headquarters area includes a pavilion with picnic tables and an historic railroad lodge. 76 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

76 old logging roads. Green and white state forest signs delineate forest property and Hansen said boundaries are marked with yellow blazes on trees to alert hikers and hunters when they are entering or exiting state lands. Aerial photo maps showing the different tracts of Redden State Forest and their various trails are available seven days a week at the headquarters tract. After turning into the main entrance off East Redden Road, just east of the railroad tracks, pass the ball field and picnic area on your left and the small fishing pond on your right. The headquarters building will be on your right just past the fishing pond. The main entrance to the building is by the screened-in section where the maps are available in a rack. 79 CITY OF LEWES - HISTORICAL TOUR This walk is filled with lots of history, shopping and restaurants Lewes, the First Town in the First State, is too filled with history to do it all in one walk. So, I will suggest a historic stroll of less than a mile, and point the way to expansion for those with fitness goals. Plant yourself at the foot of the bridge over the canal looking up Savannah Rd. (toward Rt.1). From there you can see the museum. To the left of the museum is King s Highway where one can enjoy the fine residential buildings, the Lewes Presbyterian Church, and rest at the gardens behind the library. Then again, Savannah Rd. also beckons seductively with more beautifully restored homes, and up past the Beebe Medical Center, and on to the old Lewes School that now houses some elementary grades of Cape Henlopen School District and University of Delaware s Osher Learning Center for adults. But, again looking from the foot of the Savannah Road drawbridge, there is more temptation from Gill s Neck Rd. on the left as it follows the canal. One sees lovely old homes with leased land on the canal which were occupied by prominent citizens of our town s past such as Dr. Marvel, and Col. McGarraugh. That road goes out past the unique, handturned railroad bridge and past the mansion built by Lewes menhaden industry giant Otis Smith and further on to access the Junction & Breakwater Trail connecting Lewes and Rehoboth. Gills Neck Road eventually passes the Wolfe Point, Wolfe Runne, Breakwater and Hawks Eye communities, the Cadbury continuing care retirement community, and ends at Cape Henlopen High School. Again from the foot of the Savannah Road drawbridge, if you walk backwards, or better yet go over the bridge, you head to Lewes Beach and a load of fine walks (e.g., to the ferry terminal, even the state park, or the other way along the beach or Bay Avenue to the Roosevelt Inlet). But let us now begin our walk by heading right from the drawbridge on Front St. with our first steps past the benches, flowers, and cannons of our 1812 Park that includes our docking pier. When the British failed to take the town in 1813, they left a fired cannonball in the brick foundation of the Cannonball House (1765) across from the park. While the Post Office (1953) across the street has no historic plaque, its solid presence, architecture and décor add to the town s association with the past. Saunter past the alcove of fine shops to the left, and look to the right where you will see the boatrestaurant, Gilligan s, next door to the well-appointed Inn at Canal Square. That complex borders on the Canalfront Park, where the former nethouse, also associated with the menhaden industry, serves as administrative space. The Overfalls, our restored Lightship, and the Life Saving Station (1884) and ship store come next and bring you to the Little League ball fields at the foot of Pilottown Rd. That road, where the Delaware River pilot s wives climbed to the widow s walks atop their homes to DOWNTOWN LEWES HISTORIC TRAIL Distance: about 1 mile Calories burned: about 100 Parking: 1812 Park parking lot between canal and Post Office. Tour Highlights: This tour takes visitors through the heart of the historic district of the First Town in the First State. It passes the historical complex of Lewes Historical Society, and other distinctive architectural examples of residential and commercial uses that reflect the gradual evolution of Lewes since its first settlement in The 18th century Cannonball House was struck by the British during their bombardment of Lewes during the War of Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

80 see when hubby would make it to the dinner table, is a wonderful mile walk past the Lewes Dairy to where the Virden Research Center and University of Delaware s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment are located. Note, on the canal side of Pilottown Rd., the monument to the 1631 fort which established the Dutch on our shores. From the Overfalls let me turn you left off of Front St. and up Shipcarpenters St. towards Second St. If you keep going a block more to Third St. you can see Shipcarpenter s Square which was a creative solution to an empty ten square acres. The open space was subsequently filled with old, regional homes imported along county roads to Lewes, added onto and restored for occupancy back in the 1980s-90s. That area of Third and Fourth Sts. is loaded with old homes and churches which can be enjoyed on walks to follow. But for now wander into the Historic Complex located on Shipcarpenter St. between Second and Third streets where many of Lewes shows, fairs, and markets take place. The complex is a lovely shady stroll through history including: the Hiram Rodney Burton House (1720), the Burton-Ingram House (1785), Rabbit s Ferry House (1741), the Midway School (1898) oneroom school house, the Old Doctor s Office (1840), the Early Plank House (1700) of primitive Swedish architecture, and the Thompson Country Store (1800). After the complex find your way back to Second Street and head towards Savannah Rd. You will pass some lovely historic homes on both sides of the first block and, on the corner of Mulberry St., you will see the oldest house in Delaware on the right, the Ryves-Holt House (1665). Across the street is the John Penrose Virden House, now a bed and breakfast. As you promenade down Second St. you will pass the labyrinth walk of St. Peter s Church in front of the rectory. Next is the old graveyard surrounding the Episcopal church. The building with shops on the left across from St. Peter s is the Robert Scott s Block (1885) with a particularly fine façade of brick and tile. It is a step away from King s Homemade Ice Cream which may or not be historic, but has nourished the children of Lewes and visitors for generations. Across from that is the recently renovated 1926 Rodney Hotel (until recently known as the Zwaanendael Inn) and it s new restaurant, the Rose and Crown. Next is the historic Sussex Trust bank building which now houses M&T Bank. Your credit cards should be twitching for action as you continue down past the boutiques and restaurants and antique stores of the town. If you make it past The Buttery and turn right towards the museum, you can note the Zwaanendael Club, a local organization of civic-minded women (1898). The Zwaanendael Museum across the street is a replica of a counterpart in Holland, built in 1931, to honor the three-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the town. The exhibits reflect the seafaring history of Lewes. Behind the building are the Zwaanendael Park and the Fisher-Martin House (1730) which houses the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. My suggested stroll down history lane, with the reading and related time for observation and absorption, won t serve your cardiovascular needs, but I hope that it gives you a basis for appreciating the heritage of our town. Furthermore this text is fraught with possibilities for increasing your pace and covering more distance to your heart s content. This piece was contributed by Eric Kafka. 83 PRIME HOOK WILDLIFE REFUGE BLUE GOOSE This perimeter trail traverses the refuge s woods, fields, wetlands Located in the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, the Blue Goose Trail is one of six walking trails that lace their way through the woods, fields and wetlands of this great natural habitat. Prime Hook itself was originally discovered and named by the Dutch who called it Priume Hoek which means Plum Point, due to the abundance of the wild beach plums that thrive in the dunes here. This trail was named after the Blue Goose logo (designed by J.N. Ding Darling) that has become the symbol of the entire National Wildlife Refuge system. It was originally a 1930s raised dike that wandered through the marsh and woodland interface. The Blue Goose, at 1.4 miles, is longer than most of the refuge s trails and is located at the western and northern perimeter of the trail network. It seems that way because it is circumferential and doesn t curve as tightly on itself as some of the other trails do. Visitors who arrive by car should consider the logistics of their point of embarkation as well as the intended length of their hike, as most trails will involve some return path on Turkle Pond Road. Blue Goose can be divided into four separate loops, all of which can utilize the roadway to segment the trip, if the trek must be short and sweet. We experienced this trail in two episodes. Our first venture began at the same trail head parking area where the Black Farm Trail starts and is marked by a few educational kiosks and a small off-road parking area with a four-car capacity. Reading an exhibit there, one is reminded that the refuge is home to many songbirds including the Eastern Kingbird, Yellow Warbler, Gray Catbird Distance: 1.6 miles Calories burned: about 150 BLUE GOOSE TRAIL and the Common Yellowthroat. This central loop begins with a stand of old growth trees on the left and an open field on the right that gradually yields to a forest habitat where shrubs and small trees will be dominant. After one turns to follow the curve of the woodland, the opportunity arises to take a forked path to the left which yields a generous view of sparkling Turkle Pond. The pond supports the deer, woodchucks, fox and other animals from the surrounding woodland. A bald eagle nest also overlooks Turkle Pond but usually avoids detection. Passing into a fern-covered zone, the Blue Goose trail veers off into the tall, Parking: East end, designated trail head parking along Turkle Pond Road (main road into Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, off Rt. 16,) same trail head as Black Farm Trail. West end, parking area for refuge headquarters at the end of Turkle Pond Road near canoe and kayak launching ramp. ` Trail Highlights: This is a new trail in the Prime Hook system. It affords great views of the back end of Turkle Pond, a shallow, freshwater pond that hardens quickly in freezing weather. The trail passes through excellent songbird habitat and follows an old dike along the edge of the refuge s extensive freshwater marsh system. The trail also connects with a boardwalk trail that provides visitors close-up views of the marsh and its denizens. 84 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails

84 quiet, cool architecture of mature oak, pine, holly, hickory, poplar and maple trees. Before long, the trail winds gently back to the open country path. For the second episode on Blue Goose Trail, we began in the early morning, parking by the refuge administration center near the canoe launching ramp. To get to the eastern end of Blue Goose, one starts as if headed to the Boardwalk Trail. Just as you arrive at the boardwalk, the Blue Goose signpost appears at the left. Even if time is short, it is worth walking out on the raised board-path to view the lilies on the marsh pond and the wall of trees mirrored beyond. This is a good place to birdwatch. In fall, this is a prime place to watch honking geese take off and land. This end of the Blue Goose Trail is dark and mysterious - a different world. Now the path is a raised ridge surrounded by swampy wet soil and pools crisscrossed by fallen trees. The trail is narrow and more difficult to traverse, as it is riddled with exposed tree roots and moss. If you want to look around, stop your walking to avoid tripping. One is now virtually off the beaten path - and surrounded by a variety of wetland and woodland plants. Creatures large and small live in the dense undergrowth on this special piece of Earth. Periodically a wood structure appears to bridge a small ravine and remind us that we are not alone in this world. Eventually the trail crosses a southbound utility road giving an opportunity to complete a shorter jaunt. But just across the road, one can dive back into this timeless abyss of marsh and woodland. Continuing into this second segment, the trail winds gently and finally becomes a long, straight and narrow wooded tunnel, occasionally bisected by a thick tree trunk. Suddenly, we are back at the exit to Turkle Pond Road that we experienced on our previous hike. Blue Goose Trail has offered stimulation, solitude and inspiration. The walk back to the car is also a pleasant experience with overgrown fields at each side. Stopping at the refuge book store is a pleasant and worthwhile way to end this commune with nature. Mame and Mike Cohalan contributed this article. The Blue Goose Trail system, in blue on the map, skirts Turkle Pond, goes through inland hardwoods and crosses several stretches of boardwalks as it carries walkers through the rich diversity of freshwater wetlands. 89 ANOTHER 20,000 ACRES OF OPEN SPACE Roads less traveled off the beaten path For those who prefer a lessstructured walk in town or hike in the woods, or who like to hunt while they re outdoors, Delaware owns and manages more than 20,000 acres of designated wildlife areas in Sussex County. These wildlife areas are spread all over the county as shown in the accompanying map. Hunting in a variety of forms is allowed on these lands depending on their location. Milford Neck Wildlife Area s 5,459 acres represent the largest state wildlife area in Sussex. Its uplands and extensive marsh system lend themselves to hunting for every available species of game in Delaware. The general public is permitted access to these wildlife areas but those who venture in during hunting season should either be hunting themselves or limit their forays to Sundays when hunting other than fox chases - is not permitted in Delaware. Many of the wildlife areas have dirt roads that lend themselves to quiet strolls and trails which, more often than not, lead to deer-hunting stands. There is also no hunting permitted in these wildlife areas from March 1 through Aug. 31 except for spring turkey season in some areas. The roads in the wildlife areas are open for horseback and bicycle riding as well as for pedestrians. Only pedestrians, however, are permitted on certain roads that have been closed to provide more edge for wildlife and reduce littering. The Okie Preserve on Long Neck east of Millsboro is managed as a bird sanctuary. 93 NANTICOKE WILDLIFE AREA Much to explore along Broad Creek and the Nanticoke River Nanticoke Wildlife Area s 4,415 acres on both sides of the Nanticoke River and Broad Creek, west of Laurel and southwest of Seaford, offer extensive opportunities for outdoor activities including hunting, hiking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, birdwatching and more. For those who enjoy history, the Phillips Landing picnic, fishing and launching area near the confluence of Broad Creek and the Nanticoke River presents an impressive stone marker commemorating the early 1600s exploration of this area by Capt. John Smith. This is one of the few places in Sussex County and Delaware where visitors get a Chesapeake Bay perspective. The Nanticoke River drains all of western Sussex County and empties into the Chesapeake between Maryland s Dorchester and Wicomico counties. Studded with dozens of osprey and bald eagle nests, the Nanticoke is considered the most pristine river in the gigantic Chesapeake watershed. Seaford stands near the headwaters of the Nanticoke, Laurel at the headwaters of Broad Creek and the historic shipbuilding village of Bethel lies along Broad Creek between Laurel and the mouth of the creek. In the midst of it all is the free Woodland Ferry which crosses the Nanticoke while remaining connected to a thick braided metal cable to help it stay on course whilst fighting the strong ebbing and flooding tides Area headquarters for Nanticoke Wildlife Area is located along the Old Sharptown Road which runs west from Laurel. It is located in what is known as the south area of the wildlife area. The west section of the Nanticoke Wildlife Area lies on the other side of the river. Most of the trails and hunting and fishing opportunities lie along both sides of Broad Creek. A dirt-road multi-use trail used by horseback riders, drivers, bicyclists and walkers winds its way through the woods and cutover feed plots between the Old Sharptown Road and Phillips Landing Road. A number of deer-stand trails branch off this multi-use trail. Sunday is the best time of year to hike these and other trails in the area since there is no hunting allowed on Sundays. Other than for spring turkey season, hunting seasons are also closed from March 1 through Aug. 31, although special hunting seasons such as the conservation order to help thin the snow goose population, can also be in effect. 97 THOMPSON ISLAND STATE PRESERVE This trail features salt marsh boardwalks and an overlook Thompson Island is a very small but interesting preserve located off Bay Road just outside the city limits of Rehoboth Beach. To find the head of the trail, turn right onto Canal Street from the southbound lane of Route 1 just east of the canal bridge. In this small residential neighborhood, take a left onto Bay and you will come to the trail head. Diligence is required to find it and there is virtually no parking for cars. Your best bet is to park across Rt. 1 in the shopping center there, or walk or ride your bicycle. Please Note: The Spring Lake community next to the trail is private property with parking for residents only; unauthorized vehicles will be towed. Leaving the trail is strictly prohibited. No dogs are allowed in the Thompson Island Preserve. This trail is for hiking only, although there is a bicycle parking area near the beginning of the trail. The trail is covered in crushed stone, easy to travel and wheelchair-accessible the entire path. The trail begins in a mature upland hardwood and conifer forest, traversing a small marsh, meandering through a pine forest toward the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. The trail ends at a manmade (handicap-accessible) wooden overlook showcasing views of Thompson s Island, tidal salt marsh, Rehoboth Bay and the Dewey Beach skyline. The trail out to Thompson Island is closed to the public in accordance with the Nanticoke Indian Tribe of Sussex County. The island was once a burying ground for Native American people and has long been considered a sacred place. While on the trail, be on the lookout for ospreys foraging for fish to feed the family between mid-march and late fall when the birds migrate south for the winter. White-tail deer are also residents of this area and can be seen crossing the marsh and blending in with the trees. This general area from Rehoboth Beach south to Fenwick Island is very good feeding ground for ospreys. I also spotted a bald eagle when I was there. Walt Bryan contributed this article and photographs. THOMPSON ISLAND OUT AND BACK Length: approximately 1.5 miles out and back. Calories burned: 200 at a moderate pace Parking: Ride your bike or walk to this trail. Car parking almost nonexistent. Highlights: Hard-surfaced trail through pine woods with boardwalks over salt marsh. Overlook. A kiosk at the head of the Thompson Island Trail provides a map with an overview of the area as well as guidelines for use. 98 Spring 2013 Sussex County Walks & Trails
