Preliminary Engagement Key events included: 15 one to one or group interviews. 5 pop-up events in different locations, speaking to 78 local people. 4-day public exhibition in November 2013 attended by 79 people, and 5,000 flyers distributed to residents and businesses inviting them to the event. Meetings with local stakeholders. Attendance at community events. Attendance at the Southall Community Alliance in December 2013 and Southall Partnership AGM in January 2014.

Key FINDINGS Key findings included: Local people are proud of Southall s cultural diversity. More needs to be done to encourage aspirational young people to stay in Southall. The existing high levels of traffic and congestion are a key local issue that needs to be responded to. There is an opportunity to diversify the retail offer in Southall and attract more well known stores/ high street brands. There is a need for new homes to address problems of overcrowding in Southall. There is a desire for leisure and non-faith based community facilities in the area. What are your top 5 priorities for the future of Southall? Reduced traffic congestion (55) 12% Jobs and employment Reducing crime Improving shopping areas New and improved housing Investing in young people Better sports and leisure facilities More and better parks Affordable housing Investing in education and skills Improving pubic transport Preserving Southall's old buildings (14) 3% Promotion of healthier active living (13) 3% Changing perceptions of Southall (13) 3% More community facilities (12) 3% Sustainable development and green technology (11) 2% Supporting small and independent businesses (10) 2% Connecting Ealing and Hillingdon (9) 2% Arts and cultural facilities 1% New business and office spaces 1% Other 1% (29) 6% (28) 6% (27) 6% (24) 5% (22) 5% (21) 5% (35) 8% (34) 7% (38) 8% (51) 11% Traffic is a nightmare Reducing travel congestion in Southall Pollution from traffic congestion Always traffic in Southall To make it easier for people to travel around the borough A 5 minute journey can sometimes take 20-30mins Traffic has always been horrendous on the Broadway and South Road most of time There are not many jobs locally Lack of jobs for young people In Southall there are so many people that have no jobs Jobs and employment key for future development One of most deprived areas in the country, improve that with decent jobs Need to support the next generation with jobs and hopes No employment for people who live in Southall Sometimes I feel unsafe when walking home from the station late at night More security and quicker policing It d be nice to have safer streets in the evening Reduce crime, if young people got nothing to do then they will go into crime Stronger police presence needed Definitely crime must be eradicated

the consented masterplan

the jtp revised masterplan The revised masterplan will be arranged around key public spaces It will propose the same uses as the consented scheme, arranged within 3 hubs It will propose a clear street pattern to create safe neighbourhoods It will tie into the existing street pattern and respects the surrounding homes It will create new public links to Minet Country Park and The Grand Union Canal

Character area plan Community The Northern Quarter Minet Country Park Western Gateway Convenience Grand Union Canal Minet Waterside Southall Mills Central Park Commercial The Emporium Eastern Gateway

The eastern gateway The urban gateway, bringing people in from bridge level, across a plaza with a kiosk and down a sweeping set of steps with the historic water tower straight ahead in their view.

The emporium A vibrant mixed used quarter, centred around a public square. The Emporium will contain a mix of building uses, including a cinema, supermarket, hotel, office space and restaurants.

central Park Stretching from The Emporium to the canal, Central Park is a 60m wide green space lined with new homes and mixed use buildings. It will provide play space, water and landscaped areas at the heart of the new place.

the northern quarter A network of streets tieing in with the Beaconsfield Road area. Although primarily residential this area will also include a health centre and new two form entry primary school.

southall mills Southall Mills will be a focal public space along the canalside. It will be more relaxed than The Emporium, surrounded with cafes, community and office space.

minet waterside Minet Waterside will be a residential neighbourhood, with homes overlooking a large landscaped park. The main vehicular route will run alongside the park, ensuring a safe and well-used environment.

the western gateway The Western Gateway comes into the site over two new bridges, with views across the country park through new tree planting and dropping down to the canal as the road curves round into the site.
