1 Art & Lighting The contribution to economic regeneration in Weston-super-Mare : Urban Design Meets Economic Regeneration Presentation by Mark Luck Leicester 5 July 2007 Project Overview introduction Project Overview public realm masterplan In 2001 the South West RDA launched the Civic Pride Initiative. A programme designed to complement the Government s urban renaissance policies North Somerset recognised the opportunity offered by the Initiative to help deliver Connecting Spaces, Places and People The bid document included a public realm masterplan providing a vision for enhancing key public routes and spaces. Project Overview public realm projects Project Overview brownfield sites North Somerset Council are contracted to deliver 11 public realm schemes in five years. The contract with the South West RDA includes an obligation for North Somerset Council to demonstrate its efforts to attract 100,000 of brownfield site development over the next 10 years

An efficient system relies on defining priority routes that link and connect to the places where people want to go. The wider project area is made up of a number of distinct areas. Ten areas have been identified: primary pedestrian network key strategies materials Material specification aims to reinforce local distinctiveness and provide cohesion, whilst achieving standards that are sustainable and maintainable. standard approach primary routes Four key strategies were commissioned in order to assess more detailed design issues and establish quality standards. public spaces distinct quarters

3 pedestrian wayfinding lighting The signage strategy seeks a hierarchy of pedestrian information components that reinforce the legibility of the town for all users. These have built up over the years, and are generally uncoordinated, not updatable and confusing to pedestrians. The system will be information lead, being legible and usable by a broad range of people, both during he day and at night. The system will be accurate, attractive, maintainable and updated.
