2 Andrew Cordani and Chris Cooper present The Cunning Spring Start (2015 Andi'cap) The Fox and Hounds Carshalton Village SM5 3BB 24th April 2016 Start 2.15 p.m. prompt Time Allowed 3.5 hours or phone STARTERS FYI - House names may or not be used 1 Sounds like Rovers & Basil. 2 XV small and colourful aliens staring out at us. Not greys, don't make a fuss. 3 Re-constructed, whereupon nerds win spare Numerically speaking, George H W Bush Snr. makes an entrance here. STAGE 1 Go through the gated entrance to right of pub. At end of road go through large gates ahead into Grove Park and then turn left, passing to left of playground. Follow path straight on to lake and cross bridge and then turn right with the stream Follow path around to right in front of council buildings, past the water mill and over the bridge, where take a left turn and go along with river on your left until you reach exit from Grove Park where stage ends. 4 You're looking for a negative and a positive together in this small corner 5 "All through the wintertime, he hid himself away..." here! 6. A sting, a trim waist and 2 pair of wings Here you will find all these things 7. Our star rises in the West Now that's odd, no jest! STAGE 2 Turn right out of gate and follow path between river on right and houses on left. Keep going straight forward at all junctions (follow `Wandle Trail` signs) until path opens to small green on Mill Lane, go across green and cross road before bridge and forward under railway arch. You pass Wilderness Island on right and go straight on down River Gardens. Beyond bend in road watch out for footpath on right which follows river. Where the tarmac path ends go straight forward and eventually arrive at path across green to road (Nightingale Road) where stage ends. 8 'Tis not the season for something chilly It's much too warm don't be silly 9 New heights met by Health and Safety Their sage advice is mighty lofty 10 Libel / Truth, a slippery mess spare The repainted history of a serious drop in power. Its a grey area 11 Adam, we learned, had a father but no mother
3 STAGE 3 Turn right at road, cross bridge, and stay on RH pavement all the way to London Road which you go over by pedestrian crossing and then left and right by side of tile shop and through iron gate, on to tarmac path. Where tarmac ends at gate you can usually see a lot of bird life on the lake to the left, but turn right and follow gravel track with fence on your left until you reach trees and gate to Beddington Park where stage ends. 12. Here's hoping there was not a punch-up here yesterday A local artist seems to have confused the holiday. 13 Don't take the shorter route or you will stray, At 8 times longer this one is the better way. 14 Facepalm! 15 There's only the one secured along here but will it sound like a Brit with a new green jacket? STAGE 4 Go up short path & cross the wider asphalt path and continue forward. Cross over first iron bridge and continue forward. The path veers left before the second little bridge and then we turn right at the next stone bridge with the Grange Restaurant ahead. Turn left when you reach the ornate pond and follow the path around to the right and then left past the large tree. Turn right at the well manicured hedge and over the stream with a stone wall and then turn left. Go past the warning about a narrow bridge with a low parapet. Turn left at the next entrance and follow the brick path on to the car park where the stage ends. 16. George was yesterday's man but there's some question that this one is a saint or sinner. 17 Michelle their Belle? she sang another love song. 18 A couple of vain birds, We can see right through them spare Advice to the forgetful, take your belongings as they might get run over at the very least... STAGE 5 Turn left at entrance to car park and immediately left again. Turn right at the finger post and go over the bridge and cross the road ahead and head down Lakeside with the pond on your right. Cross over the Quinton Close and follow the main road (A237). Cross the main road with care at the 2nd traffic island just past the fountain opposite. Continue towards the Rose and Crown. The stage ends at the far end of the large pond opposite the pub car park. 19 Does Captain "Willy" have confectionery to hand? 20 This indicates that we are free to wander towards your very odd coronary. 21 The ducks seem quite comfortable with the water from the cold tap. (We can't guarantee their presence on the day!) STAGE 6 Turn left after crossing the road past the pub and turn right into Westcroft Road. At bollards, turn left up to the main road & back to pub 22 It's puzzling but 'tis sometimes said, that at the pub you'll only find canned sorrow. 23 Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown But here it's fine to be down wind in town. 24 We're reading, what's the further advice? 25. Printers don't usually drop their P's and Q's and aitches but a T has gone AWOL Additional Clue which attracts no club points 26 R u knackered now with fallen arches? Apologies.
4 Map of the Route The walk runs clockwise starting from "The Fox & Hounds" in Carshalton High Street.
5 Clues for Younger Walkers Starter: Can you see a weathervane? [Hard to spot] Stage 1 When you can see the Water Mill, how many Old Fashioned Gas Lamps can you see?
