2 Construction Safety and Health Ways to reduce risk on construction sites SHAD Safety and Health 2012 Construction is a high-risk industry. The aim of this event is to give practical, hands-on advice on the following topics: HSE Suppor t 1) Competence 2) Work at Height 3) Health issues 4) Asbestos If you are a self-employed builder, manager or run a small construction company, this free half day event is a must. Up to date and practical advice to help you get to grips with health and safety on site. Practical Solutions All attendees to this event can apply for a Work at Height Workshop FREE of charge. This training is aimed at the smaller builder. This is the ninth in the successful series of annual events run by the industry for the industry in the Anglia region, as part of the UK-wide Working Well Together (WWT) campaign. 3 Event Programme 08:00 REGISTRATION, BREAKFAST AND COFFEE/TEA 08:30 Welcome and introduction 09:00 Various sessions organised giving practical demonstrations and advice on the following:! 1) Competence - Competence is about being able to do your work safely, not endanger others and meet the legal health and safety requirements. 2) Work at Height - Tower scaffolds. Work at height is the biggest single cause of fatal and serious injury in the construction industry, particularly on smaller projects. 3) Health: a) Dust; There are three main types of dust which may be found on a construction site, these are; Silica dust, non-silica dust and wood dust. Anyone who breathes in these dusts should know the damage they can do to the lungs and airways. b) Noise; Regular, frequent exposure to high noise levels causes deafness or tinnitus (permanent ringing in the ears). c) Vibration; Hand-arm vibration can cause a range of conditions called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). d) Manual Handling; The construction industry has one of the highest rates of manual handling disorders. 4) Asbestos - Asbestos-related diseases kills more people than any other single work-related cause. 13:00 Questions and answers 13:30 Close Refreshments will be provided. Trinity Park is on the outskirts of Ipswich, just off the A14. From the A14 take the exit sign-posted Lowestoft A12 and Ipswich East. At the roundabout take the A1156 towards Ipswich. (From the West this will be the third exit and you will pass under the flyover, from the East this will be the first exit). Travel for a little over a mile, passing a Honda Garage on your right, until you come to a roundabout. Take the third exit at the roundabout to enter Trinity Park. From the South - London, Chelmsford & Colchester. Travel along the A12 until it joins the A14 and follow signs for Felixstowe, traveling over the Orwell Bridge. Follow directions from the A14 detailed above. From the North - Lowestoft & Great Yarmouth. Exit the A12 at the Seven Hills Roundabout, pass under the bridge (A14) and follow the A1156 towards Ipswich. Travel a little over a mile, passing a Honda Garage on your right, until you come to a roundabout. Take the third exit at the roundabout to enter Trinity Park. By rail. Trinity Park is 5 miles from Ipswich railway station. There are regular services to London, Norwich and Cambridge. BOOK NOW!
