19 Many boaters have told me how much difficulty they have found with regard to mooring on this river. So here are a few tips - if I am preaching to the converted, then I apologise. 1) Refer to page 37 of the EA publication A User's Guide To The River Thames, which lists its free 24-hour moorings. You should have received a copy of this with your licence. 2) There are more boats around at weekends - Friday afternoons to Sunday evenings - and in school holidays, doubly so if good weather is forecast. At these times, it is sensible to start looking for a mooring early, 2-3p.m.. If you cruise until late, all the free moorings will have been taken. 3) Some riparian owners charge a fee: a sign should tell you this. Ensure you get a receipt to prove you have paid the right person. Others have erected "No Mooring" signs. But where there is a stretch of bank with no signs, and it has sufficient depth, then you can moor there, assuming it is not the bottom of someone's garden of course! 4) Look for a trimmed stretch of bank, usually the evidence of other boaters gardening efforts. These can be found in many places, such as round the back of islands (known as aits), where each spot accomodates just one boat, and is the most idyllic, rural setting you could ever wish to find. Tie to the trees, get out the sun cream and the barbeque, and enjoy. Of course these spots are not limited by the EA 24-hour limit. River Thames 19

There is a good bus service, which stops near a supermarket. From the stop marked on the far side of the road from the moorings, catch bus numbers 4, 4A, 4B, 4C or 400, alighting in Queen Street, just past the Halifax. Catch a return bus from stop E3 in Castle Street. Ask for Osney Island and alight by the church. Bridge Street East Street Osney Lock John Radcliffe Hospital (Casualty) The hospital is some distance away on the other side of the city. Take the same bus as above, alighting in Queen Street. Continue walking in the same direction then turn right into St Aldates. Catch a bus numbered 13, 13B, or 13C from stop G3 outside the Post Office, which go to the hospital. The reason for this is that the canal has reached a somewhat traumatic period in its checkered history, with a lack of reliable funding to keep it maintained, usuable, and open. On the basis that a few boats will find sufficient water per year, I am continuing to include the necessary information in this guide. If nothing else, the First Mate Guide will provide a history of retail opportunites canalside! As a result, I have been unable to personally test the moorings. However, those stated have been taken from the booklet which was sent to me by the navigation authority. All except one have bollards to tie to. I believe there are many NIP-TO's along the route which I have been unable to find: I would be grateful to receive any such information for inclusion initially on the website and then in future editions of this guide.
