1 The Pea Patch Post EAA CHAPTER 172 AUGUSTA, GA CLUB OFFICERS PRESIDENT SID BROWN 1447 Paradise Rd. Wrens, GA VICE-PRESIDENT NANDI SHETTY 581 Bay Hill Martinez, GA SECRETARY JOHN MAGNAN 1616 Mosley Chapel Rd. Wrens, GA TREASURER DON BUSH 3076 Old Waynesboro Rd. Hephzibah, GA CLUB DIVISION LEADERS TECH COUNSELORS Aldine Patton Eddie Booth NAME THAT PlaNE November, 2014 PREZ SEZ Sid Brown Fall is here! And so is cooler weather, at least some of the time. Nice crisp mornings and cooler evenings make for good flying! We had quite a bit of that, both cool weather and good flying at the Wrens Fall Fly-in this past weekend. If you missed it, well, you missed it. We had a great time and had folks from all over! We had 11 gyroplanes, 1 helicopter, 1 Trike, and 20 regular planes. There were folks from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. 123 people attended with 29 from the public and the rest pilots and crew. A bar-b-q lunch prepared by the Browns was served. Thanks to my wife Cathy, my son Ben, and my daughter Bethany for their help. I couldn t have done it without them. Thanks also to all the club members who turned out. Our numbers grew as the day went on and we had a good representation. Also, a big thanks to John Magnan for all he did to make this fly-in a success. He really works hard to pull these events off. Thanks also to Mark Slone, John Sligar, Terry Stout, Spence Olson, Brandon Olson, Johlon Olson, Al Nodorft, Michael Nodorft, Kent Goddard, Bill Smith, and Ben Brown for their help with the setup and take down. Our next meeting will be on November 8 at 12:30 pm. We will be having grilled pork chops. Also it is time to vote for new officers. Please, be ready to make your nominations. See you there! Keep 'em flying! Sid FLIGHT ADVISORS Pierre Smith pierrejs@bellsouth.net Aldine Patton YOUNG EAGLES COORDINATOR Nandi Shetty airnandi@gmail.com LIBRARIAN Joe Miles EAA 172 DOUBLE ACE Lt. Col. 2 Bill Smith from Elizabeth, West Virginia came in early AM on Wednesday. Tents were set up on Tuesday with help from the Olson men. The weather for all the fly-in days was perfect: in the 70s to low 80s, very light wind, and blue skies. The winds aloft from 1000 to 5000 feet AGL were light with no turbulence. Quite a few aircraft flew in on Friday, October 24th. A few gyroplanes were also trailered in on that day. CFI Will Robertson with an IFR student. Planes on ramp early afternoon on Friday. Gyroplanes set up to go flying mid-afternoon on Friday. Both Friday and Saturday evenings featured high definition videos taken from the air of the day's flying and of the beautiful scenery around the Wrens area. The videos and a movie were shown on a huge screen fastened to the outside wall of a hangar. Gyros overnight in the hangar late Friday. Videos of the day's flying shown on a 24' screen. Several visitors slept overnight in the bedrooms and on the couches in the lounge. During the day the AC was on and at night there was a heater running. Because of all the holiday happenings this month (Today is Thanksgiving!) and next month, there will be no EAA 172 social "get together" this month. The next one will be January 22, For questions contact Shirley Harden ghardensr@comcast.net. On the Web go to nightout.jcmservices.net AVIATION QUESTION OF THE MONTH Answer to last month s question: You were planning on a daytime commute back to your home airport, but your meeting ran long. You and your co-worker arrive at the airport two hours after sunset, and you are out of night currency. You tell your co-worker to sit tight while you go and get night current. You do three touch and goes and taxi back to pick up your passenger. Are you legal to fly passengers now? According to AOPA and the FAA: No, you are not legal to fly passengers at night. FAR 61.57(b)(1) Recent Flight Experience specifies that the takeoffs and landing for night currency must be made to a full stop. Per FAR 61.57(a)(1), that is not the case with day currency. This Month s Question: A pilot has a hard time visualizing where airmets are when the pilot gets the weather briefing over the phone or through text on the pilot's mobile device. Is there a place where the airmets are provided visually?

10 NAME THAT PLANE Spartan 7W Executive Today if you are one of the richest 1 or even 3 percent you might fly to Monaco or Dubai in your Gulfstream G650. Just before World War II, in the late 1930s, the rich and famous would have flown to their luxurious destinations in a Spartan 7W Executive. With the introduction of the Spartan Executive, the Spartan Aircraft Company created a lifestyle which was known to only a very few of the world s wealthiest and most powerful. According to Forbes The Spartan Executive was probably the ultimate prewar aircraft for the gentleman pilot. The Executive carries five passengers in Packard-like luxury for 950 miles at a cruising speed of 200 miles an hour better performance than many aircraft being built today.... the Executive had a base price when new of $23,500 (about $280,000 today). A fully tricked-out Executive like the one built in 1939 for King Ghazi of Iraq cost up to $30,000 but that one included a royal throne. Since each was custom and hand built, the cost today would probably be closer to $400,000 in labor alone. Only 36 Executives were manufactured. Howard Hughes, the world s most famous recluse and aircraft designer, is reported to have flown an Executive. Designed for comfort, the interior of the 7W was spacious and featured 18 inches of slide-back seat room for front-seat passengers, arm rests, ash trays, dome lighting, deep cushions, cabin heaters, ventilators, soundproofing, large windows, and interior access to the 100 lb. capacity luggage compartment. Built during the Great Depression, the 7W was the brainchild of company-founder William G. Skelly of Skelly Oil who desired a fast, comfortable aircraft to support his tastes and those of his rich oil-executive colleagues. The Spartan 7W Executive is a five-place all metal monoplane that features retractable landing gear and a luxurious interior. The Executive was designed to be fast and comfortable with extensive insulation to lower cabin noise levels. An ad from 1939: For the owner who seeks "INDIVIDUALITY" - Recognized in the airports of the world as the most distinguished of all private planes, the SPARTAN "Executive" is the fulfillment of everything the discriminating man looks for in personal transportation: the exciting beauty of thoroughbred design... the luxury of ultra smart custom-built interiors... the security of an all metal masterpiece equipped with every refinement that adds to performance and safety... flying ease that amazes even veteran airman! The more exacting your demands, the more you owe it to yourself to investigate the "Executive."
