WEBSITE: EAA172.jcmservices.net EAA172@jcmservices.net NAME THAT PlaNE April, 2016 PREZ SEZ Andy Lee Welcome to EAA Chapter 172! I hope that you are enjoying the company of fellow pilots. Today I would like to talk about the Air Force demo team, the Thunderbirds. I have seen them twice in my life so far and I just love them, so here is a little history about them. In 1953 the Air Force s official air demonstration team, designated the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit, was activated at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. The unit adopted the name Thunderbirds, influenced in part by the strong Native American culture and folklore from the southwestern United States where Luke Air Force Base is located. Seven officers and 22 enlisted were selected for the first demonstration team. Major Dick Catledge, a training squadron commander at Luke AFB, was chosen as the team s leader. The team flew and maintained the F-84G Thunderjet. The straight-wing configuration of the F-84G was considered well suited for aerobatic and demonstration maneuvers, though the aircraft could not exceed the speed of sound. The Thunderbirds started the 1969 training season still in the F-100Ds, but, in the spring of 1969, received the first of the new McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom IIs and began the team s conversion. The F-4 s conversion included changing paint scheme allowing paint used on the F-4 to resist heat and friction at Mach II speeds. As a result, a white paint base was developed and remains a part of today s Thunderbird aircraft design. In 1974, a spreading fuel crisis inspired a new aircraft for the team, the T-38A Talon. Although the Talon did not fulfill the Thunderbirds tradition of flying front-line jet fighters, it did demonstrate the capabilities of a prominent Air Force aircraft. Remaining true to its character to showcase the latest advancement in America s fighter technology, the first red, white, and blue F-16A assigned to the Thunderbirds was delivered to Nellis AFB, Nevada on June 22, Due to the conversion to the new aircraft, there were no official shows flown in The team flew the F-16 during the 1983 show season; making it the team s ninth aircraft and once again returning to flying a front-line fighter. Your President, Andy Lee For side dishes you might bring appropriate fish side dishes which could include hushpuppies, an almost required adjunct to a Southern seafood meal, deviled eggs, lemon wedges, sliced cucumbers, blackeyed peas, cole slaw, and other Georgia fish fry garnishings as well as desserts such as fruit salad, jello, lemon meringue or coconut cream pie, fruit cobbler, strawberries, grapes, cookies, or pound cake.

2 Minutes of the Meeting for EAA Chapter 172 for March 12, 2016, 12:30 PM Winter Soup Party The weather was quite warm, in the low 80s, with scattered clouds. Before the meeting 33 members, their families, and visitors enjoyed a delicious meal of soup and other delicious entrées with crackers as well as side-dishes and desserts. Six planes flew in. At 12:32 PM club president Andy Lee gave the invocation and everyone enjoyed the excellent soups members had brought in. The soups included chicken soup, 15 Bean soup, and vegetable/minestrone soup, as well as beef stew, ham & lima beans, and chicken & dumplings. The Aerospouses set out the side dishes. President Lee then welcomed the guests and started a brief business meeting at 12:55 PM. He welcomed new members Anne & Bill Sellitto and Marc Wilmoth as well as visitors Terry McCurry and Stan Stockman who came in McCurry's RV-6 from Greenwood, South Carolina. Pots of delicious soups and entrées. Old Business: Jim Maher moved for the approval of the minutes for the February 13th meeting. Don Bush seconded the motion, which was passed by the members. Andy Lee thanked those who brought their fine soups and entrées to share: Cindy & Joe Britt, Sid & Cathy Brown, Sheila & Charlie Connell, Ron Haley, and George & Frances Weiss, as well as Don & Virginia Bush who brought the salad and Jim Maher & Ronna Hiltz who provided condiments for the meal. [President Lee brought beef stew]. New Business: Charles Lewis discussed the need for a third partner so he, member Marc Wilmoth, and the third partner could purchase an RV-6A [request advertised on the 5th page of this newsletter]. Charles also talked about the play the Schoolhouse Players are putting on in Bartow, Georgia. Members discussed the Fish Fry Fly-in and its date. The Sun n Fun Airshow and Fly-in is April 5 10 so the normally scheduled April meeting date of April 9 would not be appropriate since many go to that fly-in. So the Fish Fry will be April 16. As decided at the January meeting, the donation for the Fish Fry is to be as much as $10 depending on the cost of the fish. Also Joe and Cindy Britt had said they would pick up the fries and onion rings. Pierre Smith will be able to get the fish. As for the cooks, Gary Harden and Steve Thompson volunteered for that task. Gary will also purchase the oil for frying the fish, fries, and onion rings. Ron Haley had said that he would be able to help cook the fish as he had done in the past. Virginia Bush said that the next social eat-out would be on March 24, 2016 at Villa Europa, 3044 Deans Bridge Road, Augusta, Georgia. Sheila Connell talking about the possible EAA 172 historical panel at Augusta Aviation. Members then discussed the possibility of an EAA 172 historical panel to be put up in a History Room on the second floor of the Augusta Aviation FBO building at Daniel Field in Augusta, Georgia. Sheila Connell elaborated on what was planned. There would be a number of panels about aviation in Augusta, Georgia. Several club members including Joe Britt, Sid Brown, Don Bush, Charlie Connell, and John Magnan chimed in with ideas and questions about this project. Our panel would have historical information about EAA 172 starting from its inception in the mid-1960s. It would include text and photographs. There was uncertainty about several factors and any cost to EAA 172. President Andy Lee, vice president Joe Britt, and treasurer Don Bush would meet early the following week at Augusta Aviation to talk with Becky Shealy, the vice-president for business development. [Note: Communications with several people early the next week determined that there will be no cost to EAA 172. The panels being put up in the Augusta Aviation FBO all have corporate sponsors, so the meeting there was called off.] Don Bush moved to adjourn the meeting. Joe Britt seconded the motion and those present approved the motion unanimously and the business meeting adjourned at 1:40 PM.

This month's location is Oliviana's Pizzeria and Grill, in Surrey Center, 399 Highland Ave, Augusta, GA Phone number: Website: Oliviana's Pizzeria. Map and directions: Oliviana's directions. For questions contact Sheila Connell conl6356@comcast.net. AVIATION QUESTION OF THE MONTH Answer to last month s question: You're about to get some recurrent training on night landings and operations from your local CFI. You're not night current to carry passengers, and neither is the instructor. Must one of you be night current to carry passengers to make this flight? According to AOPA referencing the FAA: There is no requirement for either you or the instructor to be current under 14 CFR 61.57(b) for a training flight because you are not considered passengers this is true even if the student isn't yet rated in the aircraft. For more information, see this AOPA legal briefing or this FAA letter of interpretation. The FAA has long held that authorized instructors and individuals receiving instruction are not passengers with respect to each other. This Month s Question: A friend is hoping to get some air-to-air photos of his aircraft and proposes that the two of you do some formation flying so that he can get the pictures he wants. You have no formation flying experience and are not sure this sounds like a great idea. Can this flight be done legally?

4 NTSB REMINDS PILOTS: FLY-IN ARRIVALS REQUIRE PREPARATION Just in time for Sun 'n Fun, the NTSB has issued a new Safety Alert aimed at pilots planning to fly in to an aviation event. "Arrivals at major fly-in events pose unique challenges for pilots (and air traffic controllers)," the NTSB says, "including extremely high-density traffic, special flight and communication procedures, a rapidly changing environment, and changes to air traffic control separation standards." Accidents have occurred, the NTSB says, when pilots were too slow and used an excessive bank angle (resulting in an accelerated stall), or overshot the runway when turning to final from a base leg or downwind leg (resulting in a cross-control stall). The safety alert comes in advance of two major fly-in events the April 5-10 SUN n FUN International Fly-In & Expo in Lakeland, Florida, and the July Experimental Aircraft Association s AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Major fly-in events pose unique challenges, including high-density traffic, special flight and communication procedures, a rapidly changing environment, and changes to air traffic control separation standards. The safety alert provides pilots guidance for dealing with the challenges of major fly-in events and stresses the need for them to review FAA Notices to Airmen. Events like these are a great way to celebrate the joy of aviation, said John DeLisi, director of the office of aviation safety at the NTSB, a little extra planning will help ensure a safe arrival. Aviation safety alert SA-053, titled Arriving at a Major Fly-In event: Keep Your Focus on Safety, and other NTSB safety alerts can be found HERE. ( Information adapted from General Aviation News 04/02/16 challenges of flying in to big airshows, AVweb 04/05/16 Fly-in Arrival Prep ) THE THUNDERBIRDS ARE COMING! In addition to what the club president wrote on the first page about the Thunderbirds, here is more background information. They will be in our area, at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumpter, South Carolina, on May 21-22, one week after the Wrens O.B. Brown Memorial Fly-in. Commonly known as the Thunderbirds, these F-16 Fighting Falcons present a constant image of excellence in every air show they perform in and demonstrate the capabilities of both Air Force pilots and aircraft. The Thunderbirds are an invaluable asset to the Air Force as a reminder of what air superiority looks like. Their demonstrations and feats of wingmanship display just how remarkable the United States Air Force really is. The air expo, headlined by the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force precision-flying demonstration team, and the Black Daggers, the official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, gives Shaw the opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of the Air Force through a variety of aerial demonstrations, displays, and static aircraft displays to those in attendance. In 1947, while the jet age was still in its infancy, military aviation was hurtled into the future with the creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate service. Just six years later, on May 25, 1953, the Air Force s official air demonstration team, designated the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit, was activated at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, flying the F-84G Thunderjet. In addition to Major Dick Catledge, the team s leader, Twins Bill and Buck Pattillo were selected and flew the left and right wing, respectively. The Pattillos, both captains, were ideal choices as both had flown with a demonstration team for the previous three years. For the difficult position of slot, the position sandwiched between both wingmen and behind the leader, Capt. Bob Kanaga was selected. The spare pilot was Capt. Bob McCormick. Like the Pattillo brothers, he also had demonstration team experience. First Lieutenant Aubry Brown served as the maintenance officer for the team. Lieutenant Brown, along with Master Sgt. Earl Young, selected 21 enlisted men to help maintain the team s aircraft. Captain Bill Brock was the final officer selected for the team. He served as the information officer and team narrator. The team flew and maintained the F- 84G Thunderjet. This was the first Thunderbird crew. Future crews trained to fly more and more advanced aircraft such as the F-100D, the F-4E, the T-38A Talon, and currently the F-16 Fighting Falcons. The packet of papers was supposed to have been kept in a vault at the National Archives in Washington. But when officials looked for it in 2000, to display at a special event, it was missing. It was thought to have been stolen. Curators have been looking for it ever since. William Bosanko, COO at the National Archives, told the Post the documents had simply been misfiled by mistake. "Unfortunately, with billions of pieces of paper, things sometimes go where they shouldn't be," he said. The Wrights had filed the patent application for their airplane on March 23, 1903, less than a month after they started building it. Nine months later, on Dec. 17, 1903, they flew it for the first time, at Kill Devil Hills. The application file, kept in a fat manila envelope, contains letters, affidavits, fee receipts, drawings, photos and examiner's notes, and more, according to the Post. The patent was granted in Mitchell Yockelson, an investigative archivist, told the Post he was "stunned" by the discovery. "If I had to pick one [crucial] document that's missing, this was it... It's the holy grail." For those of you who have seen Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, perhaps this is what happened to the Ark of the Covenant it is now misplaced in a limestone cave owned by the National Archives. See the end of that movie to understand that last sentence! ( Information from the Washington Post April 2, 2016, AvwebFlash April 4, 2016 )

10 NAME THAT PLANE Standard J-1 The Standard J was a two-seat basic trainer two-bay biplane produced in the United States from 1916 to 1918 powered by a fourcylinder inline Hall-Scott A-7a engine. It was constructed from wood with wire bracing and fabric covering. The J-1 was built as a stopgap to supplement the Curtiss JN-4 in production. Charles Healy Day had designed the preceding Sloan H series of aircraft and continued the line under the Standard Aero Corporation (later Standard Aircraft Corporation). Four companies, Standard, Dayton-Wright, Fisher Body, and Wright-Martin, delivered 1,601 J-1s between June 1917 and June The easiest ways to tell a Standard from a Curtiss Jenny is that the Standard s wings have a slight sweepback and both cockpits are aft of the cabane struts as opposed to just the aft cockpit of the Jenny. The space between the wings on the Standard was a foot greater and the interplane struts were vertical instead of canted forward like the Jenny s. Also the original Hall-Scott engine of the Standard used a vertical radiator placed in front of the pilot which kept him warm on cold days but was obviously a major hinderance to forward visibility. The Standard J-1 was used by the Army aviation section during World War I for primary flight instruction. After the war many were converted by Curtiss to use OX-5 engines and were sold as Curtiss-Standards. Re-engined with the Hispano- Suiza engine, the Hisso-Standard became the aircraft of choice for barnstormers and air show operators. Because the cockpits were wider than that of the Jenny two people could be carried per flight, doubling the per flight revenue of the barnstorming pilot. The wider accomodations also made room for more cargo for prohibition era smugglers on midnight sightseeing trips. Many J- 1s were flown by civilian flying schools, and for joy-riding, and barnstorming operations until they were worn out, or were forced into retirement by new air transport legislation in 1927 which banned passenger aircraft with wood structures due to a number of high profile accidents. Over a dozen J-1s are currently on display or being restored. Others projects are incomplete and awaiting restoration.
